Royal Caribbean has named retired US Air Force Gen. Lori J. Robinson as godmother of Legend of the Seas, with the naming ceremony set for Veterans Day, 11 November, in Fort Lauderdale, the line said in its announcement. The ship has been carrying passengers since July.
What actually changes in November is the itinerary, not the ship. Anyone who has been watching Legend’s move into Port Everglades now has the shape of the Caribbean programme that follows the ceremony.
- Naming ceremony: 11 November, Veterans Day, in Fort Lauderdale.
- Godmother: retired Gen. Lori J. Robinson, the first woman to lead a US combatant command.
- Short option: six night Western Caribbean voyages.
- Long option: eight night Southern Caribbean, calling at Oranjestad and Willemstad.
- On every sailing: Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas.
Two Caribbean Lengths, Two Different Trips
The Fort Lauderdale programme splits into six night Western Caribbean voyages and eight night Southern Caribbean voyages, and the gap between them is larger than two nights suggests.
The eight night itinerary reaches Oranjestad in Aruba and Willemstad in Curacao, both of which sit well outside the range a six night Western Caribbean sailing can cover. Those are southern Caribbean ports with a different feel, drier, further from the hurricane belt, and a longer sea distance from Florida.
Every voyage in both programmes calls at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private Bahamian destination. That is worth knowing before you compare the two on port count alone, because one of the stops is identical whichever you pick.
The practical read is that the six night is the Florida short break and the eight night is the one that buys you the southern Caribbean. If CocoCay is the reason you are booking, the shorter sailing gets you there for two nights less.
The Ceremony Is Not the Debut
This is the detail most coverage of a naming ceremony leaves implicit, and it changes what a reader should do with the date.
Legend of the Seas was delivered in June and entered service in early July with a seven night Western Mediterranean cruise calling in Italy, Spain and France, according to Cruise Industry News. She has a full European summer behind her.
The ship then makes her first transatlantic crossing in late October, arriving in Florida for the November ceremony. So 11 November is the US welcome and the start of the Caribbean deployment, not a first sailing.
For a booking decision that matters in one specific way. A ship three months into service is past the shakedown period that makes some buyers nervous about a brand new hull, and the reviews from the European season already exist.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Want Aruba and Curacao | Take the eight night Southern Caribbean. The six night does not reach either port. |
| Are booking mainly for CocoCay | Either length works. Every sailing calls there, so the shorter one is the cheaper route to it. |
| Are nervous about a new ship | She has sailed a full European season since July, so first season reports already exist. |
| Want to see the naming ceremony | It is a Fort Lauderdale event on 11 November. The line has not said it is open to the public. |
| Are comparing Icon class ships | Legend is the third. Our ship comparisons cover how the class differs in practice. |
Why a General, Not a Celebrity
Godmother choices usually run to actors and singers. Royal Caribbean went in a different direction, and the reasoning is in the record rather than in the marketing.
Gen. Robinson served 37 years in the Air Force, became the first woman in US history to lead a combatant command, and led both NORAD and US Northern Command. The line describes her as a role model for women in service and an advocate for people balancing careers and families.
“Having the ship’s naming ceremony on Veterans Day makes this especially meaningful to me,” Robinson said, “and I look forward to recognizing the generations of men and women who have served.”
The role itself is a real maritime tradition rather than a title. At the ceremony the godmother blesses the ship, its crew and its passengers, then breaks a bottle of champagne against the hull. Royal Caribbean uses a button that releases the bottle, as Royal Caribbean Blog notes in its account of the tradition.
Michael Bayley, Royal Caribbean’s president and chief executive, framed the choice around the line’s military customer base, citing crew and guests with service backgrounds alongside Robinson’s own record.
The Onboard Lineup That Comes With It
Because this is the third Icon class ship rather than the first, the onboard inventory is known rather than promised, and the line lists it in the same announcement.
There are 28 dining options, which Royal Caribbean describes as the most at sea, among them the Royal Railway Legend Station and the multi course Hollywoodland Supper Club. Seven pools are spread across the ship.
The signature thrill is Crown’s Edge, a combined skywalk and zip line that runs 154 feet above the ocean. Entertainment includes America’s Got Talent LIVE on Legend of the Seas and a staging of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
That inventory is the reason the six night and eight night sailings can be compared on ports alone. The ship is the same on both, so the only variable a buyer is really weighing is where it takes them and for how long. Our Icon class ship comparison covers how the sisters differ where they do.
What Has Not Been Published
No fares for the Fort Lauderdale seasons appear in the announcement, and no sailing by sailing calendar. The programme is described by length and region rather than by date.
Nor has the line said whether the 11 November ceremony affects a scheduled sailing, or whether passengers on board that day take part. Naming ceremonies are usually held alongside with invited guests, and the line has not published a guest list, a time or any public viewing arrangement for the Fort Lauderdale event.
The Western Caribbean itinerary’s specific ports are also unstated beyond CocoCay. Only the Southern Caribbean voyages have named calls at this stage.
That asymmetry is worth holding on to. A six night Western Caribbean sailing from Florida can be routed several ways, and until the calls are published the only port you can plan around on that length is CocoCay itself.
There is also no word on how long the Fort Lauderdale deployment runs. Icon class ships have been announced season by season rather than open ended, so the current programme is the one to book against rather than an assumption about 2028.
The date is an arrival, not a launch. Legend has sailed since July, so treat 11 November as the start of the Caribbean programme.
The two lengths are not interchangeable. Aruba and Curacao are only on the eight night sailing.
CocoCay is a constant. It is on every voyage in both programmes, so it should not decide which length you book.
