Labor Day Flights to Top U.S. Cities Cost 20% More

Labor Day travelers face two very different price stories this year. The average domestic roundtrip flight is only slightly more expensive than in 2025, but tickets to the destinations drawing the most holiday demand are roughly 20% higher and average nearly $800.

That gap matters more than the national average. A family heading to Seattle, Orlando, Boston or another high-demand city may see a much sharper increase, while an international itinerary or a cruise could compare more favorably than expected.

Why the 20% number needs context

AAA’s national Labor Day analysis, released August 24, compares bookings for the same five-day holiday period in 2025 and 2026. It reports an average domestic roundtrip ticket of $750, up 2%, but an average near $800 for flights to the ten most-booked domestic destinations, up 20%.

The two figures are not contradictory. The first covers domestic bookings broadly, while the second concentrates on places where more travelers are competing for seats over the same compact weekend.

Seattle ranks first on AAA’s domestic list, followed by Orlando, Boston, Denver and New York. Chicago, Anaheim and Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Anchorage and Atlanta complete the top ten.

Those cities represent several different trip types. Seattle and Anchorage connect many travelers to Alaska cruises, Orlando and Anaheim concentrate theme park demand, and Boston, Chicago and New York combine holiday leisure traffic with year-round business demand.

International flights may compare better

AAA says international roundtrip flights average $1,240, about 4% less than last year’s holiday period. Rome, Vancouver, London, Dublin and Paris lead its international bookings, followed by Calgary, Barcelona, Athens, Amsterdam and Halifax.

A lower percentage does not make an international trip cheap. It means the year-over-year direction differs from the most popular U.S. routes, so travelers with flexible plans should compare the actual total rather than assuming domestic automatically costs less.

Hotels move the other way. AAA’s regional breakdown says domestic hotel costs are about 9% higher and international hotels about 12% higher, which can erase some of the airfare advantage on a longer stay.

U.S.-port cruise bookings average about $2,700 and are 4% cheaper in the comparison. Because that figure is per booking rather than per airline ticket, it should not be placed beside airfare without adding the number of travelers, cabin type, taxes, gratuities and transportation to the port.

When Labor Day traffic is expected to be worst

INRIX expects the holiday traffic surge to overlap with ordinary commuting on Thursday and Friday. The national windows to avoid are Thursday from 2 to 7 p.m., Friday from noon to 8 p.m., Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 5 p.m.

Leaving before 1 p.m. Thursday, before noon Friday, before 10 a.m. Saturday or before noon Monday is the general recommendation. Sunday is the outlier, with minimal holiday impact expected nationally, although crashes, weather and local events can still change a route.

The route-level numbers show why a citywide average can understate the problem. Seattle to Ellensburg on Interstate 90 is projected to take 121% longer than normal Monday evening. Boston to Providence on Interstate 95 could take 105% longer Friday afternoon, and Baltimore to Washington on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway could run 90% above normal Thursday.

Travelers driving between Tampa and Orlando should pay particular attention to Friday. INRIX projects the eastbound Interstate 4 trip at nearly three hours around 3:45 p.m., about 65% longer than normal, a practical warning for anyone pairing a flight arrival with a Walt Disney World trip.

What the destination list says about demand

AAA’s list is based on its booking data, not a complete census of every Labor Day traveler. It is still useful because it identifies where its customers are concentrating hotel, airline, rental-car, cruise and tour demand.

TravelPulse’s independent summary reaches the same practical conclusion: travelers need to budget for higher lodging costs and avoid the concentrated driving peaks, even when a particular airfare looks manageable.

Seattle, Anchorage and Vancouver share a link to Alaska cruise itineraries. Denver and Las Vegas also serve as gateways for road trips to national parks, while Hertz expects Orlando, Los Angeles and Boston to be among the busiest rental-car markets.

That combination can create pressure after the flight lands. A traveler who focuses only on airfare may miss an expensive rental car, a slower airport pickup or limited hotel inventory in the same destination.

The best comparison is therefore trip-level. Add the flight, lodging, local transportation, parking, attraction tickets and schedule risk, then compare alternatives that deliver a similar experience.

How to shop without chasing a misleading average

Start with the exact dates and airports you can accept. Nearby airports can save money, but the ground transfer must still fit the arrival time, rental-car hours and the first nonrefundable reservation.

Next, compare the complete fare. A lower headline ticket may become more expensive after baggage, seat selection and change restrictions, especially for a family traveling with checked luggage.

For a road trip, price the fuel and parking but also price the time. A route projected to take twice as long can turn a cheap departure into a missed hotel check-in, late attraction entry or exhausted first evening.

AAA also notes that it answered more than 400,000 roadside-assistance calls over Labor Day weekend last year. Tire pressure, battery health, fluids and an emergency kit are not glamorous planning steps, but they protect the part of the trip most likely to become expensive without warning.

Why the same airfare can create different trip costs

A flight price is only the first transaction. Two travelers buying the same $800 roundtrip can face very different totals if one lands near public transportation and the other needs a rental car, hotel parking and a long airport transfer.

Theme park travelers should add admission, resort transportation and any timed reservation that could be lost after a delayed arrival. Cruise passengers should include the port transfer and decide whether the flight arrives early enough to protect the sailing.

A cheaper late-night flight can also create a hotel problem. If the rental counter closes before the aircraft arrives or the destination requires a long drive, the lowest fare may force an unplanned airport hotel or rideshare.

Compare each option as a door-to-door itinerary. Add baggage and seats, ground transportation, parking, lodging and the cost of a schedule failure. The best value is the trip that delivers the intended experience with a realistic buffer, not automatically the lowest number on the first search screen.

What remains uncertain

Booking averages are snapshots. They do not guarantee that a specific route will remain at the stated price, and they can change as seats sell, airlines adjust schedules or weather affects demand.

The traffic forecast is also a planning baseline rather than a live navigation feed. Travelers should check the route again on departure day and leave room for incidents that are not part of the forecast.

Gas prices deserve the same treatment. AAA says they are higher than last Labor Day, when the national average for regular gasoline was $3.19, but the amount paid on a specific road trip depends on local prices and the vehicle.

What to watch before the weekend

Watch for airline schedule changes first. A small time adjustment can change a connection, rental-car pickup or hotel arrival even when the ticket price stays the same.

Second, check weather along the entire route, not only at the destination. The most useful disruption plan identifies where the traveler can stop, which reservation has flexibility and how much delay the itinerary can absorb.

Finally, monitor the price of the complete trip. A cheaper international fare or cruise booking may still lose on lodging and transfers, while a higher domestic ticket could be the better value if it shortens the trip and removes a car rental.
