Keflavik Airport Bus 55 Now Stops at the Terminal: What It Costs

Iceland’s public bus route 55 now stops directly at Keflavík International Airport’s terminal, a change that took effect on Thursday, October 1, 2026. The Strætó route connects the airport with the capital area, and an adult ticket costs 2,400 Icelandic krónur, well below most airport coach fares.

If you are flying into Iceland on a budget and landing in the daytime, route 55 is now an easier option than before. Look for the Strætó stand on the arrivals side and pay on board with cash or a contactless card, according to Iceland Review. Check the timetable first, since the bus does not wait for flights.

Where Route 55 Stops at Keflavík Airport

Iceland Review reported that buses heading to the airport drop passengers on the departures side of the terminal, at the same area airport coaches use. You cannot board there. For arriving passengers, the bus leaves from a marked stand on the other side of the terminal, reached by a newly covered walking route designed to keep travelers out of the weather. Strætó’s airport page describes the pickup as its stop in the Bus B pick up area on the arrivals side.

Signs inside the terminal have also been improved, Iceland Review said. Route 89, which links the airport with Reykjanesbær and Suðurnesjabær, keeps its existing routes and timetable.

Route 55 Fares, Payment and Destinations

Strætó lists the one way fare from the airport at 2,400 krónur for adults and 1,200 krónur for travelers aged 12 to 17 and those 67 and older. It accepts debit and credit cards, cash and its countryside bus cards. Tickets cannot be booked in advance and are bought on board, according to Isavia’s KEF transport guide.

Not every bus goes all the way to Reykjavík. On weekdays some departures run to the BSÍ bus terminal in Reykjavík, while others end at Fjörður in Hafnarfjörður, where riders change to route 1. On weekends, Fjörður is the end of the line. Bicycles are allowed on five of the route’s 12 regular departures, Iceland Review said.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Land in the daytime Check the route 55 timetable first.
Stay in central Reykjavík Pick a departure that runs to BSÍ.
Arrive late at night Book an airport coach instead.
Travel on a weekend Plan to change to route 1 at Fjörður.

How Route 55 Compares With Airport Coaches

Isavia’s guide puts the ride from the airport to BSÍ at about 1 hour 20 minutes and says route 55 is not timed to meet flights, so it suits daytime arrivals best. Airport coaches such as Flybus cost more, with Isavia listing fares from 3,999 krónur, but they run to a timetable built around arriving flights and take about 45 minutes to BSÍ, with hotel transfers available.

For a solo traveler with light bags arriving in daylight, the public bus is the cheapest way into the capital area. Families or groups may find a coach or a rental car more practical once the fares add up, especially if a change at Fjörður would mean moving luggage between buses. If your flight lands late in the evening, check the last departure carefully, since missing it leaves a taxi as the main alternative.

Weather can also play a part. Autumn storms bring wind and heavy rain to the Reykjanes peninsula, which is why the covered walkway matters, and buses can run late in poor conditions. Allow extra time on the way back to the airport, and check Strætó’s website or app for service updates before you set out.
