Kansas City Airport Opens New 167 Space Cell Phone Lot

Kansas City International Airport has opened a new public cell phone waiting lot for drivers picking up arriving passengers. The free lot is at 50 Bern Street, near Bern Street and Tel Aviv Avenue north of the terminal, while the former waiting area on Brasilia Avenue is now reserved for rideshare drivers.

The July 14 opening changes where family members, friends and other private drivers should wait before going to the Arrivals curb. The new area has 167 parking spaces, three electric vehicle charging stations and an emergency call station, giving public drivers a separate staging area instead of sharing space with app based operators.

The public waiting point has moved to 50 Bern Street

Kansas City International now lists 50 Bern Street as the address for its public cell phone waiting lot. The airport’s current parking guidance says the lot is only a few minutes from the terminal and is intended to keep drivers from circling airport roads while an arriving traveler finishes the trip through the terminal.

Drivers should use the Bern Street exit and follow signs for the waiting lot near Tel Aviv Avenue. Because the previous lot has a different purpose now, relying on an older saved address or a familiar route to Brasilia Avenue can put a private driver into the rideshare staging area instead of the public pickup queue.

The lot is not a place to leave a vehicle while entering the terminal. Airport rules set a 45 minute maximum wait and prohibit unattended vehicles, so the practical use is to remain with the car until the arriving passenger has collected any checked bags and is ready at the curb.

The Arrivals curb remains an active pickup zone

The new lot does not change the airport’s curb rule. Kansas City International says a vehicle may pull to the terminal curb only long enough to collect or drop off a traveler, and the arriving passenger should be outside and ready before the driver approaches.

That sequence matters because arrival time on a flight tracker is not the same as curb readiness. A traveler may still need to taxi to the gate, walk through the terminal, wait for checked baggage or complete another arrival step after the aircraft is shown as landed.

The smoother plan is for the driver to enter the cell phone lot first and wait for a message from the passenger. Once the passenger identifies the correct Arrivals curb area and confirms that all luggage is in hand, the driver can leave the lot for the short trip to the terminal.

Local KSHB reporting, based on information from the Kansas City Aviation Department, says the old rideshare lot has 100 spaces. The public lot’s 167 spaces give private drivers a larger dedicated waiting area and reduce the need for the two groups to compete for the same staging space.

The distinction is between the person waiting and the person being collected. A friend or relative driving a private vehicle belongs in the new public lot, while an Uber, Lyft or other app based operator should follow the airport’s commercial rideshare instructions and stage at Brasilia Avenue.

Arriving passengers who plan to request a rideshare should wait until they have their bags and reach the designated commercial curb before booking. The airport says pickup takes place by the purple signposts marked 2K through 2N, where space is limited and passengers should wait until their assigned vehicle is in a marked position.

The new lot adds capacity, charging and safety equipment

The public lot opened with 167 spaces, three electric vehicle charging stations and an emergency call station. Those features address both the basic need for a larger waiting area and the practical needs of drivers who may arrive before a flight reaches the gate.

KCTV reported that the project had been in development for more than a year and confirmed the July 14 opening. The airport’s public parking page also says a restroom is planned for the lot, but travelers should treat that as a coming feature rather than assume it is available on every visit immediately after opening.

Kansas City approved a $5.39 million construction contract for the project in June 2025. The city legislation record identifies the Kansas City Aviation Department as sponsor and MegaKC Corporation as the contractor, establishing the public project behind the new operating arrangement.

The charging stations are an amenity, not a reason to extend the stay beyond airport rules. Drivers using a charger still need to observe the 45 minute limit, remain with the vehicle and leave when their passenger is ready or when the permitted waiting period ends.

Drivers should update saved directions before the next pickup

The most important preparation is to replace the former public waiting address with 50 Bern Street. Navigation services can lag a newly opened facility, so the airport’s live directions and roadway signs should take priority if a map app points toward the old Brasilia Avenue location.

Drivers should also confirm the flight number, airline and expected terminal arrival before leaving home. A flight can arrive early or late, and a passenger’s message from the curb is more reliable for the final pickup move than an estimated arrival time alone.

If a delay will push the wait beyond 45 minutes, the driver should avoid treating the cell phone lot as long stay parking. Kansas City International offers garage, surface and economy parking for longer needs, each with separate prices and access arrangements shown on the airport’s parking page.
