JR Kyushu ¥23,000 Pass Starts Oct. 1: What Is Included?

JR Kyushu’s new ¥23,000 three-day pass becomes usable October 1, 2026, covering unreserved ordinary-class travel on its Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen lines and other eligible trains. The September 25 operator announcement introduces the Kyushu de Aou product, with a ¥3,000 child version purchased alongside an adult pass.

The important catch is seating: this is not an all-inclusive reserved-seat pass. Before paying, compare your actual trains, your family’s ticket eligibility and the separate foreign-visitor JR Kyushu Rail Pass. The new product’s low child price can matter, but an adult traveling alone should not assume it is the cheapest option.

At a Glance
  • Price: ¥23,000 adult; ¥3,000 child with an adult purchase and the same itinerary.
  • Validity: Three consecutive days, not three separate travel days.
  • Travel window: October 1 through December 24, 2026; latest first day December 22.
  • Sales: September 26 through December 21, with advance-purchase conditions.
  • Included seating: Ordinary-class unreserved seats; reserved and Green Car charges are additional.

Three Consecutive Days From October 1

Travel Watch’s September 25 report confirms the prices, sales dates and October-to-December use period. The pass is a newly named rail product, separate from the previously announced Kyushu accommodation subsidy. A hotel discount does not itself provide this train ticket.

The final permissible start date is December 22 because the three-day validity must fit inside the travel window ending December 24. Likewise, a pass beginning October 1 covers October 1, 2 and 3; it does not provide three rides that can be spread across a longer holiday.

Build the itinerary before choosing the first day. A quiet hotel day between two long rail journeys still uses one of the consecutive days. That can make ordinary individual tickets more sensible for travelers staying in one city rather than moving around Kyushu.

Unreserved Seats and Important Line Exclusions

The operator includes ordinary-class unreserved travel on eligible JR Kyushu limited-express, local and rapid trains, both of its Shinkansen systems and the Hita Hikosan Line BRT. The coverage is broader than a single route, but it is not unrestricted access to every railway physically located on the island.

JR Kyushu’s official release excludes the Sanyo Shinkansen between Hakata and Kokura and the Hakata-Minami Line. Non-JR services, including the Fukuoka subway and Hisatsu Orange Railway, require their own applicable fares. Do not confuse a geographically nearby station with an included operator.

For ordinary reserved seats, travelers need the appropriate separate reserved-seat limited-express ticket. Green Car travel requires the applicable additional ticket too. All-reserved sightseeing services such as Yufuin no Mori cannot be boarded using this pass alone; the covered base fare does not remove the reservation charge.

Decision Matrix
Your Plan What to Check Before Buying
Several eligible intercity journeys in three days Compare the ¥23,000 pass with the total of actual individual fares.
A child traveling with an adult Purchase the child product together with the adult product for the same itinerary.
Yufuin no Mori or another all-reserved train Add the required reserved-seat ticket; the pass alone is insufficient.
Hakata to Kokura by Shinkansen Buy separate coverage for that excluded JR West segment.

The Family Price Changes the Comparison

One adult plus one qualifying child totals ¥26,000 for the new passes, before extra reserved-seat charges. Two adults and two qualifying children total ¥52,000. These are arithmetic comparisons from the published pass prices, not package offers including hotels, meals or other transport.

There is a separate choice for eligible overseas visitors. The operator’s English JR Kyushu Rail Pass page displays a three-day All Kyushu price of ¥22,000 adult and ¥11,000 child, while noting different online-booking prices. That product requires the specified foreign-passport and temporary-visitor eligibility.

Its ordinary reserved-seat conditions are also different: reservations obtained in Kyushu can be included under the pass’s rules, while advance online reservations may carry charges. An adult should therefore compare both the checkout price and desired seating, rather than treating ¥23,000 as a universal saving.

The family totals can point in a different direction because the new child product is much cheaper. Even then, compare the actual route, child conditions and any paid reservations. A lower headline pass total is not useful if the itinerary needs excluded lines or several seat supplements.

Buy Ahead and Collect the Actual Ticket

The official product conditions require purchase through JR Kyushu’s online train-reservation service. Reservations open one month before the first day, with the usual purchase deadline at 11 p.m. on the preceding day. Certain convenience-store, bank and station-payment methods have an earlier deadline.

The buyer needs a JR Kyushu web-member account. Collect the physical ticket at an eligible JR Kyushu counter or reserved-seat vending machine before boarding. For credit-card payment, the operator requires the payment card for collection; an online booking confirmation is not the physical pass.

Adult purchases also include two ¥500 station-shopping vouchers subject to participating-store and purchase conditions. Confirm the threshold and tax basis directly before relying on them, because the operator’s campaign and detailed product pages use different tax wording. They are conditional shopping discounts, not cash deducted from the rail-pass price.

JR Kyushu separately donates ¥1,000 per adult pass to Kumamoto recovery. That is the operator’s contribution, not another ¥1,000 travel refund. The product is designed to support regional travel, but its sale does not certify that every damaged route, hotel or attraction is operating normally.

Planning Impact

October 1 starts the travel window. Choose three consecutive days with enough eligible journeys to justify the fare.

The preceding day is a purchase boundary. Allow time for payment and ticket collection, especially if using a method with an earlier cutoff.

December 22 is the final first day. Do not plan a December 23 start on the assumption that unused days can extend beyond December 24.

Frequently Asked

Does the new JR Kyushu pass include reserved seats?

No. Its ordinary-class unreserved coverage does not include the additional reserved-seat or Green Car tickets.

Can a child buy the ¥3,000 pass alone?

No. The child version must be purchased with an adult version and used for the same itinerary.

Is this the foreign-visitor JR Kyushu Rail Pass?

No. They are different products with different prices, eligibility and seating conditions. Compare both where eligible.

Can I use the three days separately?

No. Validity is three consecutive days within the October 1 through December 24 travel period.
