JFK Terminal 7 Drop-Offs Relocate Starting September 22

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said departure drop-offs at John F. Kennedy International Airport Terminal 7 move to the ground level of the Terminal 7 Parking Garage beginning Tuesday, September 22, and stay there until further notice. The weekly travel advisory dated September 18 is the current access rule for private cars heading to that terminal.

If you are flying Aer Lingus, Air Canada, ANA, Condor, Frontier, Icelandair, Kuwait Airways, or Norse Atlantic from Terminal 7 this week, do not plan on the old curb. Send the driver into the garage, or skip the loop and ride AirTrain. Parking for Terminal 7 is not in that garage. Book the Terminal 8 Red Garage instead, which is the lot already mapped in Deep Arrival’s JFK Terminal 8 connections guide.

At a Glance
  • Change: Terminal 7 departure drop-offs move to the garage ground level on Tuesday, September 22, until further notice.
  • Buses and vans: Height limits send buses and shuttle vans to a new stop on the Terminal 7 roadway, not into the garage.
  • Parking: The Terminal 7 garage stays closed for parking. Book Terminal 8 Red Garage at least 24 hours ahead.
  • Ride apps: JFK’s Terminal 7 page still sends ride-app pickups to Howard Beach AirTrain Station.
  • Airlines: Air Canada, ANA, Aer Lingus, Condor, Frontier, Kuwait Airways, Norse Atlantic, and Icelandair currently list Terminal 7.

Terminal 7 Drop-Offs Move Into the Garage Tuesday

The Port Authority’s wording is specific: drop-offs for departures relocate to the ground level of the Terminal 7 Parking Garage. That is a passenger unload, not a parking stay. The garage remains closed for parking, so a driver who follows garage signs as if they were booking a space will be in the wrong product.

The change is dated to Tuesday, September 22, and runs until further notice. There is no published end date in the September 18 advisory. Treat Tuesday as the first morning the old curb may no longer accept a private car drop, and build extra minutes for wayfinding the first time you use the garage level.

JFK is in the middle of a $19 billion redevelopment, and the same advisory tells motorists to expect detours and delays on airport roadways. Drivers headed to Terminals 5, 7, and 8 should use the JFK Expressway. Van Wyck Expressway access is for Terminals 1 and 4. Mixing those approaches adds a loop you do not need on a departure morning.

Buses and Ride Apps Do Not Follow the Same Path

Height restrictions keep buses and shuttle vans out of the garage. The Port Authority is directing those vehicles to a new bus stop on the Terminal 7 roadway for passenger pickup, with on-site wayfinding. Hotel shuttles, off-airport parking vans, and scheduled coaches should not copy a private-car GPS pin into the garage ground level.

Ride-app pickups are a third map. The official JFK Terminal 7 page says ride-app pick-up locations for Terminal 7 have temporarily relocated to Howard Beach AirTrain Station because of construction. That is arrivals and app pickups, not the Tuesday departure drop-off. A traveler who lands at Terminal 7 and opens Uber or Lyft still rides AirTrain to Howard Beach rather than waiting at the curb.

Terminal 5 already uses the same Howard Beach Ride App and Car Services Lot, with free AirTrain for passengers exiting to that lot. If your party splits between Terminal 5 and Terminal 7, do not assume both curbs still work. Confirm the terminal on the boarding pass, then pick the matching pickup rule.

Parking for Terminal 7 Stays at the Red Garage

The Terminal 7 garage, the Orange Garage on JFK’s parking board, remains closed. JFK’s live parking table lists Terminal 7 Orange as closed and tells those customers to use Terminal 8 Red. The Port Authority’s Terminal 7 note is stricter on timing: book the Red Garage at least 24 hours in advance.

Airportwide, the Port Authority also warns that travelers who park more than three hours without a pre-booking pay a peak-period drive-up surcharge, and it wants spaces reserved at least three hours ahead. For a Terminal 7 itinerary, use the 24-hour Red Garage instruction first. A same-day drive-up at Orange is not an option.

JFK’s parking page currently shows Terminal 8 Red around half full, with Terminal 4 Blue and Terminal 5 Yellow still open for their own terminals. Those lots are not a substitute if you need to stay next to Terminal 7. Red Garage plus AirTrain is the published path. If Red is sold out, switch the trip to Long Island Rail Road or subway plus AirTrain rather than circling closed decks.

Transit Beats the Construction Loop

The Port Authority is pushing mass transit for JFK while construction owns the roadway. Long Island Rail Road runs about 20 minutes from Grand Central Terminal or Penn Station to the AirTrain JFK station at Jamaica. Subway and bus connections also feed Jamaica and Howard Beach. AirTrain between passenger terminals is free.

Drivers who still want a car drop without entering a terminal frontage can use the free drop-off and pickup lot at AirTrain’s Lefferts Boulevard station. From there, the Port Authority says passengers connect to a free AirTrain ride of about eight minutes to the terminals. That lot is the published overflow when terminal curbs are under construction.

AirTrain JFK now takes OMNY and other contactless cards, with a $43.50 cap on eligible trips in a rolling 30-day window when you use the same payment method. Groups of five or fewer can tap the same card within five minutes for a $26.75 group maximum. Those caps matter more if you are making repeated Terminal 7 runs during the garage drop-off period.

Choosing JFK over LaGuardia or Newark is still a New York airport decision. Deep Arrival’s closest airport to New York City guide is the comparison for that choice. Once the ticket is on Terminal 7, the Tuesday garage rule is the local constraint.

Eight Airlines Still Check In at Terminal 7

JFK’s Terminal 7 page currently lists Air Canada, ANA (All Nippon Airways), Aer Lingus, Condor, Frontier, Kuwait Airways, Norse Atlantic, and Icelandair. Walk times from security to all gates are about one to five minutes. Aer Lingus and the shared Horizons T7 Lounge are the lounge options named on that page.

Frontier is on that Terminal 7 list through early October. Deep Arrival already reported that Frontier ends all JFK flights on October 5. A Frontier ticket after that date is not a Terminal 7 problem. A Frontier departure before October 5 still uses this garage drop-off.

Do not treat third-party pages that say Terminal 7 already closed. The Port Authority is writing new access rules for a terminal it still operates, and JFK’s own terminal page is still selling check-in, food, and lounge detail for T7. Confirm the terminal in the airline app the night before, because JFK assignments can move during redevelopment.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Need a private-car drop at Terminal 7 from September 22 Use the Terminal 7 garage ground level for departure drop-offs, then leave. The garage is not parking.
Arrive by hotel shuttle, parking van, or bus Stay on the Terminal 7 roadway and follow signs to the new bus and van stop. Height limits block the garage.
Need a ride-app pickup after landing at Terminal 7 Take AirTrain to Howard Beach. Do not wait at the Terminal 7 curb for Uber or Lyft.
Must park a car for a Terminal 7 flight Book Terminal 8 Red Garage at least 24 hours ahead, or switch to LIRR or subway plus AirTrain.
Planning Impact

Tuesday, September 22, is the drop-off switch. Private cars headed to Terminal 7 departures should use the garage ground level from that morning until the Port Authority publishes a later change.

Twenty-four hours before you drive is the parking gate. Terminal 7 Orange stays closed. A Red Garage reservation made the night before is the published on-airport option.

Until further notice is the recovery window. There is no end date on the September 18 advisory. Recheck the Port Authority weekly advisory and the JFK Terminal 7 page before a later trip.
