Jetstar Cancels 2 Routes as Christchurch Sydney Returns

Jetstar’s northern winter schedule is now filed, and it confirms the trans-Tasman reshuffle the airline flagged in June. Two routes end on October 25 and Sydney to Christchurch comes back the next day after a seven-year gap.

With six weeks to go, the flight numbers and times exist, which is the point at which this stops being an announcement and becomes something you can book around. If you are pricing a low-fare trans-Tasman ticket, our Jetstar baggage fees guide covers what the headline fare does not include.

At a Glance
  • Ending October 25: Cairns to Christchurch and Sunshine Coast to Auckland, three weekly each.
  • Starting October 26: Sydney to Christchurch, four weekly on an Airbus A320.
  • Starting October 27: Perth to Christchurch, three weekly on an A321LR, unchanged from the earlier plan.
  • Days: Sydney to Christchurch runs Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
  • Net effect: Six weekly frequencies out, seven in, and the map moves from Queensland to Sydney and Perth.

What the Filed Schedule Confirms

AeroRoutes published the filing on September 15, and it puts all four changes in one place for the first time.

The two cancellations are dated from October 25, which is the first day of the northern winter season. Sydney to Christchurch is effective October 26 at four weekly on an A320, and the Perth to Christchurch service planned for October 27 at three weekly on an A321LR is confirmed unchanged.

The timetable itself: JQ140 leaves Christchurch at 09:10 and reaches Sydney at 10:40. JQ141 leaves Sydney at 12:30 and arrives into Christchurch at 17:40. Both operate Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

That southbound arrival time is the number worth noting. A 17:40 landing leaves a usable evening in Christchurch but not a usable onward domestic connection to the smaller South Island airports on the same day.

Two Queensland Routes End on October 25

Cairns to Christchurch and Sunshine Coast to Auckland both go, three weekly each, for a combined six frequencies out of the market.

Jetstar gave its reasons in June and they have not changed. The airline pointed to lower than expected demand on both routes, with load factors it described as well below its network average, and to a significant rise in operating costs including fuel.

It also named a specific charge. Australia’s passenger movement charge rises from 70 to 80 Australian dollars per departing passenger on January 1, a fee collected when the ticket is sold. Children under 12 are exempt.

The airline’s own framing was that these were difficult decisions on specific routes taken in response to low passenger numbers and challenging market conditions, and that its commitment to Queensland remains strong.

For a traveler, the practical reading is narrower than the corporate one. Two direct options between regional Queensland and New Zealand disappear, and what replaces them is a connection through Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne.

Sydney to Christchurch Returns After Seven Years

Jetstar last flew Sydney to Christchurch until October 2019, when it dropped the route for weak demand. It returns on the same calendar week seven years later.

The New Zealand Herald reported the launch with introductory fares from 219 New Zealand dollars one way in a 48-hour sale, and Jetstar’s own announcement put the Australian side at 229 dollars one way. Those launch prices are long gone; the schedule is what remains.

Jetstar also describes itself as the only low-fares carrier connecting Western Australia directly to the South Island once the Perth service starts on October 27.

Two low-cost routes into Christchurch from opposite corners of Australia is a meaningful change for the South Island, which has historically been reached by connecting through Auckland.

Trans-Tasman Capacity Goes Up, Not Down

The headline reads like a retreat and the arithmetic says otherwise. Six weekly frequencies end, seven begin, and that is before the rest of the schedule.

Jetstar is also lifting Auckland to Melbourne from seven flights a week to eleven, and retiming the Hamilton to Sydney pair. The Hamilton departure moves from 13:10 to 10:00 and the Sydney to Hamilton flight moves from early morning to 12:30, which the airline says is to give smoother connections onto its Australian and international network at Sydney.

So this is a relocation rather than a reduction. Jetstar is pulling capacity out of leisure routes from regional Queensland and putting it into the two largest Australian gateways plus more Melbourne frequency, with Sydney rebuilt as the connecting point.

October 26 is a busy day across the Tasman for other reasons too. Air New Zealand becomes the first international airline at Western Sydney Airport on the same date.

If You Are Booked on a Cancelled Route

Jetstar said in June that customers holding tickets on the suspended services would be rebooked onto alternative flights or offered a refund.

If you are rebooked, check what you are being moved onto before you accept it. A connection through Brisbane or Sydney in place of a direct Cairns or Sunshine Coast departure is a materially different trip, and the refund is the better option if the new routing does not work for you.

If you are looking at Christchurch after October 26, the new Sydney service is the cheapest direct way in from eastern Australia, and the Perth service from the 27th is the only direct low-fare option from the west. For what to do once you are there, our guide to the filming locations across New Zealand is built around the South Island.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Hold a ticket on Cairns to Christchurch Check the rebooking offered. Take the refund if it routes you through a hub.
Hold a ticket on Sunshine Coast to Auckland Same. The route ends October 25; a connection is not the trip you bought.
Want Sydney to Christchurch Four weekly from October 26, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Are flying from Perth Direct to Christchurch from October 27, three weekly, unchanged.
Need an onward South Island connection The 17:40 arrival is late for a same-day regional hop. Plan an overnight.
Planning Impact

The dates are six weeks out. October 25 for the cancellations, October 26 and 27 for the new services.

Capacity is not falling. Six weekly frequencies out, seven in, plus four more Auckland to Melbourne.

Queensland loses the direct options. Cairns and the Sunshine Coast both revert to connections.
