Japan Airlines JMB Premier: How to Plan for 2027 Elite Status

Japan Airlines is renaming its JGC Premier elite tier to JMB Premier and dropping the requirement to join JAL Global Club, so any JAL Mileage Bank member who earns enough will be able to reach it. The change applies to flights taken from January 1, 2027, and the tier keeps oneworld Emerald status, the alliance’s top level.

If you fly JAL or other oneworld airlines often enough to earn 80,000 FLY ON points in a year, plan your 2027 flying with this tier in mind. You will still need at least 40,000 of those points on JAL Group flights, according to Traicy, which reported JAL’s September 30 announcement.

Our Japan Airlines guide covers the airline’s cabins, baggage rules and routes.

At a Glance
  • Change: JGC Premier becomes JMB Premier.
  • Applies to: flights from January 1, 2027.
  • Points route: 80,000 FLY ON points, 40,000 on JAL Group.
  • Flights route: 80 flights, 40 on JAL Group, plus 25,000 points.
  • Alliance tier: oneworld Emerald stays.

JAL JMB Premier Qualification Rules

Under the new rules, members can qualify in one of two ways. The first is 80,000 FLY ON points in a calendar year, including at least 40,000 on JAL Group flights. The second is 80 flights, including at least 40 on JAL Group flights, plus at least 25,000 FLY ON points. Those thresholds match the current JGC Premier requirements listed on JAL’s FLY ON status page. The difference is that JAL Global Club membership is no longer needed.

For comparison, JAL’s page lists JMB Diamond at 100,000 FLY ON points, including 50,000 on JAL Group flights, and JMB Sapphire, which carries oneworld Sapphire status, at 50,000 points. That leaves JMB Premier as the lowest JAL tier with oneworld Emerald.

Benefit Changes for 2028

Traicy said the benefit revisions for Diamond Metal, JMB Diamond and JMB Premier take effect in fiscal 2028, the status year earned through 2027 flying, and that services for members holding status in fiscal 2027 do not change. New annual bonus miles will be added: 30,000 for Diamond Metal, 20,000 for JMB Diamond and 10,000 for JMB Premier.

Some perks are narrowing. Traicy reported that a Service Selection benefit will be limited to Diamond Metal, that Diamond Metal’s international ticket handling fee waiver ends, and that JMB Premier members will not get the no expiry mileage benefit. Their miles will follow JAL’s standard expiration rules instead.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Earn near 80,000 FLY ON points Plan 2027 flights to reach Premier.
Mostly fly other oneworld airlines Check you can hit 40,000 on JAL.
Hold JGC Premier now Expect no change in fiscal 2027.
Rely on non expiring miles Review expiry dates before 2028.

The main benefits that come with the tier stay the same, according to Traicy, including First Class Lounge access, dedicated security lanes, advance seat selection, priority boarding and oneworld Emerald status. Emerald status brings lounge access when flying with oneworld partner airlines, which is where much of the value lies for travelers outside Japan.

Who Gains From the JAL Change

The biggest winners are frequent JAL flyers who never joined JAL Global Club, which has required a separate membership. Under the new rules, reaching the points or flight threshold is enough. Travelers based outside Japan who fly JAL across the Pacific several times a year may now find Emerald status within reach on JAL alone.

The 40,000 point minimum on JAL Group flights means you cannot qualify only by flying partner airlines. Before you shift spending, check how many FLY ON points your usual JAL fares earn, since premium cabins and long haul routes earn far more than discounted economy tickets, and keep a record of your progress in your JAL Mileage Bank account.

If you currently credit oneworld flights to another program, such as American AAdvantage or British Airways Executive Club, compare how close each one would get you to its top tier with the same 2027 flying. Status in one program does not combine with another, so splitting flights between programs can leave you short in both. Pick one program early in the year and credit every eligible flight to it, so your FLY ON points or flights build toward a single target.
