Island Queen has canceled every September 10 sailing between Falmouth and Martha’s Vineyard, but customers can still retrieve parked vehicles until 5 p.m. under today’s alert. The catch is the connection: the operator provides no shuttle back to its parking lots from another ferry company’s terminal, so a replacement boat does not automatically get you to your car.
The dated Island Queen notice cites forecast high winds and rough seas. Before buying an alternative, use our Martha’s Vineyard ferry-terminal guide to distinguish the mainland gateways and the island arrival towns. A trip ending at Woods Hole or Vineyard Haven is not interchangeable with the Falmouth and Oak Bluffs journey you originally arranged.
- Cancellation: All Island Queen sailings on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
- Parking: Today’s specific alert allows vehicle retrieval until 5 p.m.; no shuttle from another transport service is provided.
- Rebooking: Use Manage My Booking in the confirmation email or call 508-548-4800.
- Refund request: Email the confirmation number and last name to [email protected] for the unused ticket portion.
- Other ferries: Check individual operating notices; this is not proof that every Martha’s Vineyard route has stopped.
The 5 p.m. Parking Deadline Changes the Return Plan
The September 10 alert is unusually useful because it addresses what happens after the ferry cancellation, not just the canceled crossing. It keeps Island Queen’s parking lots open for vehicle retrieval until 5 p.m. That is the relevant deadline for a customer whose car is still on the Falmouth side.
The same page’s standing weather policy, lower down, lists a general pickup window ending at 4 p.m. Today’s prominently dated notice is more specific and gives the later time. Use the September 10 instruction, while confirming directly with the operator if your expected arrival would be close to the cutoff.
There is no courtesy shuttle from other ferry services to Island Queen’s lots. If a replacement crossing lands you somewhere else on the mainland, the remaining ground journey is yours to arrange. Island Queen also says the cost of choosing alternative transport is the customer’s responsibility.
For someone already on Martha’s Vineyard, work backward from the car-pickup deadline: find an operating mainland crossing, establish its arrival terminal and allow for the onward transfer to the lot. A boat departure before 5 p.m. does not, by itself, mean the car can be collected before the lot closes.
The standing policy warns that out-of-hours emergency access may not be available during weather cancellations. Do not treat a possible late let-out as a guaranteed fallback. If reaching the lot in time is doubtful, call before committing to another journey and ask what arrangement applies to your vehicle today.
Unused Tickets Can Be Refunded or Moved
Island Queen’s alert lets customers change to a future date through the Manage My Booking link in their confirmation email. The operator also provides phone assistance at 508-548-4800. Confirm the revised reservation rather than assuming a submitted request has secured a particular sailing.
For refunds on the unused portion of a booking, the notice asks customers to email [email protected] with the confirmation number and last name. Its published weather-cancellation policy offers a credit-card refund as well as a digital gift-card option. Travelers do not need to mistake the gift card for the only option described.
The standing policy says refunds typically appear on the online card statement within four to seven business days. That is a typical processing window, not a guarantee for a particular bank or reservation. Keep the original confirmation and the refund correspondence so the unused portion and requested outcome remain clear.
A ticket refund is separate from the cost of a replacement ferry, taxi or additional accommodation. The operator specifically warns that alternative transport is at the customer’s expense. Check a separately booked hotel’s conditions or speak to its staff if the cancellation changes your arrival, rather than assuming that one refund resolves every part of the trip.
Rhode Island Departures Are Also on the Canceled List
Rhode Island Fast Ferry’s September 10 service alert separately lists four canceled Martha’s Vineyard departures: 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. from Quonset Point, Rhode Island, and 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. from Oak Bluffs. The operator says reserved passengers have received email correspondence.
The page’s introductory line refers to morning departures, but the actual list includes the two afternoon sailings as well. Read the full list, not only the heading. A traveler considering Quonset Point as a fallback should not assume its 3 p.m. departure is available simply because the introduction mentions the morning.
Island Queen directs passengers to the Steamship Authority for alternative ferry information. The authority’s current travel page separately warns that gusty winds could affect its Woods Hole to Martha’s Vineyard service. A referral to another operator is not a guarantee that a specific sailing will run or has the capacity you need.
Keep the original ticket and the replacement booking separate. Do not assume Island Queen tickets are accepted by a different company, that parking transfers are included or that the new boat arrives at the same island town. Our terminal guide’s distinction between Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven becomes particularly important when a pickup or accommodation check-in depends on the arrival point.
A Weather Warning Is Not a Ferry Restart Time
The National Weather Service’s marine forecast for a nearby sound location, updated at 6:27 a.m. Eastern on September 10, carries a small craft advisory until 4 p.m. It provides independently issued weather context, not an instruction that a commercial ferry resumes when that advisory expires.
Island Queen’s own notice cancels the entire day’s sailings. It does not offer an evening restart after the weather-advisory window. The operator makes its sailing decisions for the route and vessel; a forecast for one marine point does not describe conditions along every possible replacement crossing.
For September 11, check a fresh operator update and your reservation. Neither today’s cancellation nor an improving forecast establishes Friday’s full operating pattern. The useful distinction is between a published timetable, a confirmed booking and the live status of the departure you plan to use.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Have a car in Island Queen parking | Arrange arrival at the lot by today’s 5 p.m. retrieval cutoff; another ferry does not include a shuttle. |
| Want your unused ticket value back | Email the confirmation number and last name, specifying the refund request. |
| Are considering Rhode Island Fast Ferry | Its September 10 list includes both morning and afternoon cancellations; do not rely on the heading alone. |
| Choose another mainland terminal | Verify the sailing, island arrival and ground transfer before paying for the replacement. |
September 10 is an all-day Island Queen cancellation. Do not wait for an unannounced evening restart.
5 p.m. is today’s vehicle-retrieval deadline. Include the transfer from any alternative mainland arrival terminal.
September 11 is a fresh status check. Confirm both the revised reservation and the operator’s current service notice.
Is Island Queen running on September 10?
No. The operator has canceled all Thursday, September 10 sailings because of forecast high winds and rough seas. That applies to Island Queen, not automatically to every company serving Martha’s Vineyard. Check any replacement operator’s actual departure status.
Can I pick up my car after the ferry is canceled?
Today’s specific Island Queen alert says parking lots remain open for vehicle retrieval until 5 p.m. No shuttle from another ferry terminal is provided. If your alternative arrival is close to that deadline, contact the operator before relying on late access.
How do I request an Island Queen refund?
Email [email protected] with the booking confirmation number and last name. The published policy offers a refund for the unused portion and says card refunds typically appear within four to seven business days. A future-date change or digital gift card is also described.
Are Rhode Island Fast Ferry’s afternoon boats running?
Its current September 10 alert lists the 3 p.m. Quonset Point departure and 5 p.m. Oak Bluffs departure as canceled, alongside the morning pair. Read the listed departures even though the page’s introduction refers to morning service.
