Island Queen has canceled every Falmouth to Oak Bluffs sailing from September 23 through Monday, September 28, after the National Weather Service forecast for high winds and rough seas. The passenger ferry, which does not carry cars, says it plans to resume its regular schedule on Tuesday, September 29. The halt is posted on the operator’s travel alert page, which also points riders to the Steamship Authority for alternate island access.
If you hold an Island Queen ticket for today or Monday, treat that crossing as dead and either move the booking, request a refund, or switch operators before you drive to Falmouth. For the wider Vineyard routing picture, including Woods Hole car-ferry terminals, see Deep Arrival’s Boston to Martha’s Vineyard ferry guide. This shutdown is a new dated window after the operator’s September 10 wind closure.
- Canceled: All Island Queen sailings September 23 through Monday, September 28.
- Resume plan: Regular schedule Tuesday, September 29, weather permitting.
- Route: Passenger-only Falmouth to Oak Bluffs; no cars, no SSA shuttle to Island Queen lots.
- Tickets: Change online or at 508-548-4800 from 8:00 a.m.; refunds by email with confirmation number.
- Parking: Lots open 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for vehicle pickup on canceled days.
Island Queen Halt Covers September 23 Through 28
The operator’s alert is blunt: all sailings beginning September 23 through Monday, September 28, are canceled. Island Queen cites the National Weather Service forecast for high winds and rough sea conditions, the same nor’easter pattern that has already disrupted Cape and Islands marine traffic this weekend. The company says it will keep updating the website and its Twitter account as conditions change.
This is a passenger-only route between Falmouth and Oak Bluffs. It is not the Steamship Authority car ferry from Woods Hole, and a cancellation here does not automatically cancel SSA. Island Queen tells customers that any extra cost of switching operators is on them. There are no shuttle services from other ferry companies into Island Queen parking lots.
NWS Boston / Norton has posted weekend wind-damage and flooding reports for the same storm, which is why marine operators have been making trip-by-trip calls. Island Queen’s window is longer than a single Sunday: it already covers Friday through Monday, with Tuesday named as the first planned return. That published resume date is the number that should drive hotel, car, and connecting-bus choices.
Steamship Authority Restarts Woods Hole Sailings Sunday
Island Queen names Steamship Authority as the alternate. SSA’s own Sunday advisory is more specific than a generic “use SSA” line. Conditions were expected to improve Sunday, allowing a gradual resumption on both of its routes, with a hard caveat: no service will run from the Oak Bluffs Terminal.
On the Woods Hole to Martha’s Vineyard route, SSA said vessels would return Sunday starting with the M/V Aquinnah at 7:40 a.m. and the M/V Island Home at 8:15 a.m., then keep using Woods Hole rather than Oak Bluffs. Change and cancellation fees were waived for travel scheduled through Sunday. High-speed and Nantucket assignments were still being set from the weather.
If your plan was a walk-on into Oak Bluffs on Island Queen, that SSA blackout matters. You may still reach the island through Woods Hole, then use on-island buses or taxis. Check SSA’s current-status board before you leave the Cape, because Sunday’s restart is weather-dependent.
How to Change or Refund an Island Queen Ticket
Island Queen says you may change a reservation to a future date at no extra fare, based on availability, until 30 minutes before departure. Use Manage My Booking on islandqueen.com with the confirmation number and the email or mobile number on the file, or open My Tickets in the Island Queen app, tap Manage Order, then Change. Phone support is 508-548-4800 during normal business hours, with the alert asking callers to begin at 8:00 a.m.
For unused sailings in this window, the operator offers three money paths. Transfer the reservation to another date online or in the app. Email [email protected] with the confirmation number and last name to request a digital gift card for the unused portion, which can be applied to a later booking. Or request a credit-card refund for that unused portion through the same email; refunds typically post in 4 to 7 business days.
Do not assume a same-day SSA walk-up will be cheaper or even available. Woods Hole car space is a different product from Island Queen’s passenger deck. If you already paid Island Queen parking, factor the lot hours below before you leave a car in Falmouth.
Falmouth Parking Lots Stay Open for Vehicle Pickup
On canceled sailing days, Island Queen parking lots remain open for vehicle pickup between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. That is the window if you left a car at Falmouth and now need it back because the boat is not running. The operator warns that emergency let-outs outside those hours, which carry an extra $20 cash fee, may not be available in this weather.
There is no shuttle from Steamship Authority terminals or other ferry companies to those lots. If you rebook onto Woods Hole, you still have a Falmouth parking problem unless you retrieve the car inside the 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. band. Build that errand into the same calendar day as the canceled sailing, not into Tuesday’s hoped-for resume.
Travelers sleeping on the Vineyard this week should also revisit lodging access. Oak Bluffs waterfront inns and campgrounds still need a boat, bus, or aircraft. Deep Arrival’s where to stay in Martha’s Vineyard town guide is useful once you know which terminal you can actually reach.
Tuesday Resume Still Depends on Sea Conditions
Island Queen plans to resume the regular sailing schedule on Tuesday, September 29. That is a plan, not a guarantee. The same alert that names Tuesday also says the company will keep posting weather advisories, and SSA’s Sunday note repeats that safe resumption depends on the weather cooperating.
Watch three gates. First, Monday night: if the NWS marine forecast for Vineyard Sound still shows high winds or rough seas, treat Tuesday morning as at risk and keep refund or change options open. Second, Tuesday’s first posted departure on islandqueen.com: if that sailing is not listed as operating, do not drive to Falmouth on hope. Third, SSA Oak Bluffs: even after Island Queen returns, SSA may still skip Oak Bluffs, which changes how cars and freight move even when foot passengers are sailing again.
If Tuesday holds, decide whether to keep a shifted Island Queen reservation or stay on SSA. After a six-day hole in the timetable, Tuesday boats may fill, so change early rather than at the 30-minute cutoff.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Hold Island Queen tickets for September 27 or 28 | Treat those sailings as canceled. Change the date online or email for a refund or gift card. |
| Need to reach the Vineyard on Sunday | Use Steamship Authority via Woods Hole. Do not count on Oak Bluffs terminal service. |
| Left a car in an Island Queen Falmouth lot | Pick it up 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Emergency $20 let-outs may be unavailable. |
| Can wait until Tuesday, September 29 | Keep the Island Queen booking only after the operator lists Tuesday as operating. |
Monday, September 28, is the last canceled Island Queen day in the current alert. Do not drive to Falmouth for that boat. Change, refund, or switch to Woods Hole before the parking lot closes at 4:00 p.m.
Tuesday, September 29, is the planned resume. Confirm the first sailing on islandqueen.com before you leave home. If it is missing, keep using SSA Woods Hole.
Sunday’s SSA Oak Bluffs blackout is a separate gate. Even while Woods Hole restarts, you will not step off at Oak Bluffs on SSA until that terminal is restored.
Is Island Queen running on September 28?
No. Island Queen canceled all Falmouth to Oak Bluffs sailings through Monday, September 28, and plans to resume Tuesday, September 29.
When does Island Queen resume after the wind halt?
