Iarnrod Eireann will take trains off the Cork to Cobh and Cork to Midleton lines on Saturday, Oct. 3, and Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026, while signalling crews work on the Cork Area Commuter Rail project. The operator’s engineering notice lists replacement buses for almost every listed commuter departure, plus a string of outright cancellations on Saturday, and it cancels six Dublin Heuston to Cork trains and six Cork to Dublin Heuston trains that same Saturday because of separate track work between Limerick Junction and Charleville.
If you hold a ticket for Cobh, Fota, Midleton, Tralee, or the Dublin to Cork intercity this weekend, open the Iarnrod Eireann engineering works page and the Journey Planner before you leave the hotel. A Cork weekend still works if you rebuild the day around buses and the trains that survive, including the dinner map in our guide to where to eat in Cork.
- When: Saturday, Oct. 3, and Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026.
- Cork commuter: Buses replace listed Cork to Cobh and Cork to Midleton trains both days; several Saturday Cobh departures are cancelled outright.
- Dublin to Cork: Six Heuston to Cork trains and six Cork to Heuston trains are cancelled on Saturday only.
- Kerry: Cork and Mallow trains to Tralee run to Killarney only, with buses onward to Farranfore and Tralee.
- Next step: Recheck the Journey Planner the morning you travel; a later Cork signalling weekend is already posted for Oct. 17 and 18.
Cork, Cobh, and Midleton Run on Replacement Buses
The Cork to Cobh branch is the line visitors use for the harbour town, the Titanic trail, and Fota. On Saturday the 06:00 Cork to Cobh is a stopping bus only. From 07:00, Irish Rail plans a direct bus to Cobh plus a second bus that calls at Littleisland, Glounthaune, Fota, Carrigaloe, Rushbrooke, and Cobh.
The 07:30, 08:30, 09:30, 10:30, 11:30, 12:30, 13:30, 14:30, and later half-hour Cork to Cobh trains are cancelled with no bus pair listed for those clock times.
Sunday drops the cancellations but keeps the buses from 08:00, with 08:00 and 09:00 as stopping buses and later hours as a direct bus plus a stopping bus. Cobh to Cork is mirrored.
Cork Safety Alerts compiled the same operator tables and notes that many Midleton line buses leave about 15 minutes after the printed train time. Every listed Saturday Cork to Midleton trip from 05:45 to 22:45 is a bus, as is every listed return from 06:15 to 23:15. Sunday keeps buses from the first 08:15 Cork to Midleton. Mallow to Cobh trains on Saturday run only between Mallow and Cork. Cruise passengers using the Kent Station spur should also read the Ireland cruise guide and budget extra time.
Six Dublin to Cork Trains Are Cancelled Saturday
Engineering between Limerick Junction and Charleville hits the Dublin to Cork spine on Saturday only. Irish Rail cancels the 08:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, and 18:00 Dublin Heuston to Cork trains. The 17:00 is kept, deferred to 17:05, and calls extra at Ballybrophy, Templemore, Thurles, and Charleville. The current notice lists no matching Sunday cancellations on that corridor.
From Cork, the operator cancels the 07:00, 09:25, 11:25, 13:25, 15:25, and 17:25 trains to Heuston. A special 08:40 will run. The 10:25, 12:25, 14:25, 16:25, 18:25, and 20:25 leave 20 minutes later and several add Thurles, Portlaoise, or Ballybrophy. Move a hotel transfer off a cancelled even-hour Heuston departure onto the 17:05 down or a surviving Cork train.
The 08:20 Cork to Mallow is cancelled. Specials run Cork to Mallow at 10:10, 12:20, 14:05, and 16:05, and back at 10:55, 13:05, 15:05, and 17:05. Use those as the Saturday shuttle if you connect to Kerry buses at Mallow.
Killarney to Tralee Trains Stop Short of Kerry Airport
Bridge and track work between Killarney and Tralee cuts the last rail miles into County Kerry on both days. Saturday Cork to Tralee trains at 06:25, 09:00, and the deferred 21:00 (printed 20:55) run to Killarney only, then buses continue to Farranfore and Tralee. Mallow to Tralee trains at 11:25, 13:25, 15:25, and 17:25 each leave 15 minutes later and also stop at Killarney.
The 17:05 Heuston to Tralee is recast to start from Mallow at 19:50 and ends at Killarney. Northbound, the 07:05 Tralee to Heuston becomes a 06:35 bus to Farranfore and Killarney, with the train leaving Killarney at 07:46 for Mallow only. Later Tralee trips use the same bus-then-train pattern. Farranfore is the Kerry Airport station, so a same-day flight now includes a country-road bus. The September list of Tralee and Limerick cancellations is chronology only; this weekend is a different works package.
Southside DART Stops at Dun Laoghaire This Weekend
The same two days close the coastal DART south of Dun Laoghaire. There is no DART between Dun Laoghaire and Greystones. Services run only among Malahide, Howth, and Dun Laoghaire. Closed stations include Sandycove and Glasthule, Glenageary, Dalkey, Killiney, Shankill, Woodbrook, Bray, Greystones, and Kilcoole.
A Leap card used on Irish Rail can be used on TFI buses in the affected area. That does not restore a cancelled Heuston to Cork seat. For a first-trip frame that still holds when one corridor is down, use our things to do in Ireland guide and pick a city that still has a through train.
Tickets, Leap Cards, and the Next Engineering Weekends
Check the Journey Planner for calling patterns. Many Cobh buses run in pairs, and deferred Dublin trains add extra stops. Move a cancelled-train ticket onto a listed alternative or the replacement bus the planner shows. Do not assume a Saturday half-hour Cork to Cobh train still has a bus.
A second Cork signalling weekend is already posted for Oct. 17 and 18. The Oct. 24 to 26 bank holiday then cuts more southside DART and the Howth branch. Shift a harbour day to midweek if you can. If the dates are fixed, take the direct Cobh bus when both buses are offered and leave Kent Station earlier than the old rail timetable.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Need Cobh, Fota, or Midleton on Oct. 3 or 4 | Ride the listed replacement buses; skip Saturday half-hour Cork to Cobh times that are cancelled. |
| Hold a Saturday Dublin to Cork intercity ticket | Avoid the six cancelled Heuston departures and the six cancelled Cork departures; use the 17:05 down or a deferred Cork to Heuston train. |
| Are connecting to Kerry Airport or Tralee | Plan a Killarney change and a bus to Farranfore and Tralee both days. |
| Want the south Dublin coast by DART | Turn at Dun Laoghaire; Bray, Greystones, and the closed stations have no DART this weekend. |
Saturday, Oct. 3, is the intercity cancellation day. Move a Dublin to Cork ticket off the six cancelled Heuston departures and the six cancelled Cork departures before you travel.
Oct. 3 and 4 are the Cobh and Midleton bus days. Leave Kent Station earlier than the printed rail time, and ignore Saturday half-hour Cobh trains that have no substitute.
Oct. 17 and 18 are the next Cork signalling weekend. Shift a harbour or distillery day to a midweek date if those days are still flexible.
Does the Cork to Cobh train still run on Oct. 3?
Most listed Saturday trips become buses. Half-hour Cork to Cobh trains such as 07:30, 08:30, and 09:30 are cancelled with no bus pair. Irish Rail also cancels six Dublin Heuston to Cork trains and six Cork to Heuston trains that day.
Do Cork to Cobh trains run on Sunday, Oct. 4?
Listed Sunday trains still appear in the plan, but they run as buses from 08:00 onward, with a direct bus plus a stopping bus at most hours. There is no normal rail service on that branch while the signalling work is underway.
Are Dublin to Cork trains cancelled on Sunday as well?
The current Iarnrod Eireann notice lists the six-each-way cancellations and the 20-minute deferrals for Saturday, Oct. 3, only. Recheck the Journey Planner on Sunday morning in case the operator adds a further notice.
How do I get from Cork to Tralee this weekend?
Trains from Cork and Mallow run to Killarney only. Buses cover Killarney to Farranfore and Tralee. Northbound passengers leave Tralee by bus, then join the train at Killarney.
Will the DART reach Bray or Greystones on Oct. 3 and 4?
No. Irish Rail is running DART only between Malahide, Howth, and Dun Laoghaire. Bray, Greystones, Dalkey, Killiney, and the other named southside stations are closed for the weekend works.
When is the next Cork commuter rail shutdown after this weekend?
The operator’s major-works table already lists another Cork to Cobh and Midleton signalling weekend on Oct. 17 and 18, 2026. A larger DART closure follows on Oct. 24 to 26.
