Indian Railways Starts Upgraded PRS Ticket Booking Migration

Indian Railways has started moving reserved trains onto an upgraded Passenger Reservation System in August 2026. The traveler decision is practical: book only through official channels, leave extra time during Tatkal and peak windows, and recheck PNR status if a train is mid-migration.

Online demand now dominates. Ministry figures cited in recent reporting show hundreds of millions of reserved tickets over a year, with the large majority booked online rather than at counters. That pressure peaks during Tatkal windows when millions of passengers try to grab scarce seats at the same second.

The upgraded system aims for more than 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute and more than 40 lakh enquiries per minute. Those targets matter less as marketing numbers and more as a signal that CRIS is building for concurrent load that regularly breaks older infrastructure.

How the August migration changes booking behavior
