The land ports are Agartala, Darranga, Gede, Ghojadanga, Haridaspur, Jaigaon, Dawki, Moreh, and Attari (Road). Those are overland crossings, not airports. Do not treat them as a substitute for a Tirupati or Bhopal arrival unless you are already on that land border.
The ministry said the expansion is meant to make e-Visa travel easier while keeping technology-based security in place. It also said about 95 percent of e-Visa applications are processed within 72 hours, and about 78 percent of all Indian visas are now electronic.
India launched e-Visa in 2014 for 43 countries. It now covers 172 countries and 17 sub-categories, including tourist, business, medical, student, transit, mountaineering, and cruise group visitor visas.

Do not assume a domestic hop after a Delhi arrival needs the new airport on your e-Visa. Domestic transfers after you have already entered India use a different process. The new list is about first entry into the country.
Who should actually change plans
Pilgrims headed to Tirupati are the clearest air case. If an international arrival is sold into Tirupati on your dates, you can now hold an e-Visa and enter there instead of routing through Chennai or Bengaluru and adding a domestic flight.
Central India travelers using Bhopal have the same logic. Bhopal is useful only when the international flight exists. Otherwise keep the usual Delhi or Mumbai entry and fly domestically after immigration.
Cruise passengers on a group visitor visa should read the land and seaport list, not just the two new airports. The ministry still treats cruise group visitor visas as one of the 17 e-Visa sub-categories, but your ship will use a notified seaport, not Tirupati.
Overland travelers to the northeast or Punjab should print the nine new land-port names. A crossing that was previously closed to e-Visa holders can now be legal. Confirm the specific checkpoint name, not just the state.
Everyone else can treat this as a future-routing fact. It does not change the 72-hour processing claim, the 172-country eligibility list, or the need to carry the ETA printout and the passport used in the application.
How to book without painting yourself into a corner
Start with the airline search, not the press list. If no international arrival shows for Tirupati or Bhopal on your dates, the new authorization is unused capacity. Keep a major-hub arrival.
If a flight does exist, open the official e-Visa page and confirm both airports still appear on the authorized checkpost list the day you pay. Notices can be updated. A screenshot from August 10 is not a boarding pass.
Then match the e-Visa sub-category to the trip. A tourist ETA does not become a medical or student visa because you landed at a new airport. The entry-point list and the visa category are separate controls.
Carry the same passport, the approved ETA, and a return or onward plan. The ministry's 72-hour processing claim is an average, not a same-day promise. Apply before you lock a nonrefundable pilgrimage package that depends on a first-time Tirupati arrival.
