I-94 Eastbound Closes Oct. 2 to 5 at Galesburg

ShareEmailWhatsAppLinkedInXFacebook
Wet Interstate 94 in Michigan with a posted I-94 shield and traffic in the travel lanes under an overcast sky.

The Michigan Department of Transportation will close eastbound Interstate 94 at 35th Street in Galesburg from 8 pm Friday, October 2, 2026, to 6 am Monday, October 5, 2026, for a $440,000 resurfacing job. MDOT’s September 24 notice says traffic will leave the freeway on the I-94 ramps at Exit 85, and 35th Street itself will close at the interstate so that detoured traffic can keep moving.

Anyone driving Chicago to Detroit, Detroit to Chicago’s return, or a Michigan weekend along this stretch should rebuild the eastbound Friday-to-Monday window now. If the trip is a longer Michigan itinerary, keep the dates next to the rest of the route on Deep Arrival’s things to do in Michigan guide so a Galesburg detour does not land on top of a tight hotel or park day.

MDOT Sets the Oct. 2 to Oct. 5 Eastbound Window

The MDOT press release dated September 24, 2026 is the operating source. It names Galesburg, Kalamazoo County, eastbound I-94 at 35th Street, a start of 8 pm Friday, October 2, and an estimated end of 6 am Monday, October 5. The work is weather dependent.

MLive published the same hours and the same $440,000 scope on Sept. 24, attributing the project to MDOT and describing full-depth pavement repair plus hot-mix asphalt resurfacing. Treat those two pages as one fact set, not two different closures.

Westbound I-94 is not listed as closed in that notice. Do not assume both directions shut down. If you are only westbound through Galesburg that weekend, still watch for slower traffic where eastbound vehicles re-enter, and check Mi Drive before you leave because MDOT can change a weather-dependent window.

Exit 85 Detour and the 35th Street Local Cutoff

MDOT says eastbound I-94 will be closed at 35th Street with traffic detoured on the I-94 ramps at Exit 85. Exit 85 is the 35th Street interchange serving Galesburg. In practice, eastbound through traffic leaves the mainline, uses those ramps, and returns to I-94 beyond the work zone.

35th Street will be closed at I-94 so the detoured freeway traffic can flow. Local 35th Street traffic is sent onto MN Avenue, 40th Street, and East Michigan Avenue. That is a separate decision from the freeway detour: residents, farm traffic, and anyone using 35th Street as a north-south cut-through need the local loop, not just the Exit 85 ramps.

MLive repeats the same local loop. Do not invent extra exits. If a mapping app offers a different county road, verify it against MDOT’s posted signs on the night of Oct. 2. Trucks that cannot use a tight local street should stay on the signed Exit 85 freeway detour rather than following a passenger-car shortcut.

Chicago to Detroit Drivers and Weekend Michigan Trips

Eastbound I-94 is the main overnight and weekend spine between Chicago, southwest Michigan, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, and Detroit. A Friday 8 p.m. start hits people leaving the Chicago area after work and people leaving west Michigan for a Saturday event in Detroit or Ann Arbor. A 6 a.m. Monday reopen is aimed at the Monday commute, not at Sunday evening return traffic.

If you must be eastbound on Saturday or Sunday, budget the Exit 85 detour as a real extra. MDOT did not publish a minute count for the ramp loop. Add time, fuel, and a bathroom stop in Galesburg or Battle Creek rather than assuming the mainline speed holds. Overnight eastbound runs that usually stay on I-94 through 35th Street should leave earlier Friday or wait until after 6 a.m. Monday.

Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport traffic that uses I-94 east toward Detroit or west toward Chicago should separate airport access from this mainline closure. Deep Arrival already covered a separate Kalamazoo airport flight pause in the September airport halt; that stream is over. This story is the freeway, not the airfield.

Weather, Cost, and Why MDOT Is Taking the Lanes

MDOT prices the job at $440,000 and says it includes full-depth pavement repair and hot-mix asphalt resurfacing. The agency’s safety line is that a full closure gives crews and motorists a safer work area than a live-lane patch. Economic modeling in the notice says the investment is expected to support four jobs directly and indirectly.

Weather can slip the Friday 8 pm start or the Monday 6 am finish. Rain on a resurfacing weekend is the usual reason an estimated end date moves. If Friday night is wet, do not treat the original 8 pm time as locked until MDOT or Mi Drive restates it. MLive also flags that the timeline depends on weather.

This is a short, named-place closure, not a multi-month rebuild of I-94 across Berrien County or Detroit. Do not mix it with those larger MDOT programs. The only dates that belong on a calendar for this story are October 2 at 8 pm and October 5 at 6 am, plus a weather check the afternoon of October 2.

Checks to Make Before You Roll Friday Night

Print or screenshot the MDOT detour before you lose cell service in a work zone. Confirm whether you are eastbound. If you are, plan to leave I-94 at Exit 85 and ignore 35th Street as a through route until Monday morning. If you live on 35th Street, use MN Avenue, 40th Street, and East Michigan Avenue for local trips.

Tell anyone meeting you in Detroit, Ann Arbor, or Battle Creek that eastbound arrivals from the west may run late Friday night through Sunday night. Hotels and Sunday flights out of Detroit Metro do not move because I-94 is closed at Galesburg, so the buffer belongs on the drive, not at the airport desk.

On Monday after 6 a.m., assume the mainline is trying to reopen, then verify. A weather hold can leave barrels in place past the estimated end. Until MDOT says the eastbound lanes at 35th Street are open, keep the Exit 85 plan in the trip notes.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Drive eastbound I-94 Friday night through Sunday night Leave the freeway at the Exit 85 ramps from 8 p.m. Oct. 2 until 6 a.m. Oct. 5, weather permitting.
Drive westbound only The MDOT notice does not close westbound I-94; still check Mi Drive for backups at the work zone.
Use 35th Street as a local cut-through Follow MN Avenue, 40th Street, and East Michigan Avenue while 35th Street is closed at I-94.
Can shift the trip Clear the corridor before 8 p.m. Friday or wait until after 6 a.m. Monday.
Are in a heavy truck that cannot use local streets Stay on the signed Exit 85 freeway detour rather than the 35th Street local loop.
Planning Impact

8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 2026 is the eastbound close. Leave Chicago or west Michigan earlier that day if you must stay on I-94 through Galesburg.

6 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 2026 is the estimated reopen. Sunday night eastbound traffic still needs the Exit 85 detour.

Weather is the slip gate. Recheck MDOT or Mi Drive on Friday afternoon before treating either clock time as final.
