The Minnesota Department of Transportation has pulled this weekend’s planned shutdown of eastbound Interstate 94 through downtown Minneapolis and reset it for mid-October. The agency’s live I-94 and I-394 project page now lists the full eastbound closure between Highway 55 and I-394 from 10 p.m. Friday, October 9, through 5 a.m. Monday, October 12, after rain blocked bridge work that needs dry pavement.
Drivers headed into downtown or through the Lowry Hill area this Friday night through Monday morning can keep using eastbound I-94. The next hard dates are Wednesday, September 30, when the Highway 55 ramp onto eastbound I-94 closes, and the October 9 weekend, when eastbound I-94 and both directions of I-394 next to downtown close together. Match those windows against things to do in Minneapolis if a hotel night or event ticket depends on a freeway arrival.
- This weekend: The eastbound I-94 full closure that had been set for 10 p.m. Friday, September 25, through 5 a.m. Monday, September 28, is postponed.
- New closure: Eastbound I-94 between Highway 55 and I-394 closes 10 p.m. Friday, October 9, through 5 a.m. Monday, October 12.
- Posted detour: Highway 55 to Highway 100 to I-394.
- Ramp change: Highway 55 to eastbound I-94 closes Wednesday, September 30, through Monday, October 12, with a Lyndale Avenue detour.
- Same October weekend: Westbound I-394 closes between downtown Minneapolis and I-94, and eastbound I-394 closes between I-94 and downtown.
This Weekend’s I-94 Closure Is Off
A September 22 MnDOT news release had set eastbound I-94 to shut between Highway 55 and I-394 from 10 p.m. Friday, September 25, through 5 a.m. Monday, September 28, for repairs on the I-94 bridge over Glenwood Avenue and the Green Line Extension. The original plan kept westbound I-94 open and sent eastbound traffic onto Highway 55, Highway 100, and I-394.
FOX 9 reported on September 25 that MnDOT postponed the work because patching, sealing, and related bridge repairs require dry conditions. Rain was forecast to move into Minnesota Friday night and linger over the Twin Cities on Saturday. The station said MnDOT rescheduled the closure for October 9 to 12 and pushed the Highway 55 ramp shutdown to September 30. The project page now matches those dates, which is the traveler’s binding schedule.
Treat the September 22 release as the original plan, not as tonight’s instruction. The project page warns that it is not updated over weekends or overnight and points drivers to 511mn.org for live traffic. Recheck 511 before a Friday evening departure, because weather can move these dates again. All construction on this corridor is listed as weather dependent.
October 9 to 12 Closures and the Posted Detour
When the work proceeds, eastbound I-94 will close between Highway 55 and I-394 from 10 p.m. Friday, October 9, through 5 a.m. Monday, October 12. MnDOT’s posted detour is Highway 55 to Highway 100 to I-394. Budget extra time if you are arriving from the west metro or for a Saturday event downtown.
The same October window stacks two I-394 shutdowns onto that I-94 closure. The project page lists westbound I-394 closed between downtown and I-94, and eastbound I-394 closed between I-94 and downtown, Friday night through Monday morning. A driver who used I-394 as the September 25 detour cannot assume that path is open on October 9.
Deep Arrival already covered the finished eastbound I-394 closure of September 18 to 21. This block is a different interstate, a later date, and a combined downtown pinch. Do not reuse last month’s detour notes.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Drive I-94 east this weekend | Keep the freeway. The September 25 to 28 full closure is postponed. Watch 511 for ordinary lane work. |
| Use the Highway 55 ramp after September 30 | That ramp is closed through October 12. Follow Lyndale Avenue onto eastbound I-394. |
| Need downtown on October 9 to 12 | Avoid eastbound I-94 from Highway 55 to I-394 and both directions of I-394 next to downtown. Use Highway 55 to Highway 100, transit, or streets. |
| Need overnight parking on a drive-in trip | Lock the October weekend before you book. See RV parks near Minneapolis after the freeway window is set. |
Highway 55 Ramp Access Shifts to September 30
The Highway 55 ramp onto eastbound I-94 is the next dated move. MnDOT now lists that ramp closed from Wednesday, September 30, through Monday, October 12. The September 22 release had it shutting September 24 through October 10. FOX 9 said the start slipped with the mainline work. Ignore any flyer that still shows September 24.
The ramp detour is Lyndale Avenue to eastbound I-394. That path stays open until October 9, when eastbound I-394 closes between I-94 and downtown. From September 30 through October 8, the ramp is gone but I-394 can still carry the detour. From October 9 through October 12, both are closed.
Highway 55 itself stays a through route. The restriction is only the ramp onto eastbound I-94. If you merge from 55 toward St. Paul or the University area, use Lyndale from September 30.
How the Bridge Repair Project Still Limits Downtown
This delay sits inside a MnDOT job that began in July 2025 and runs through fall 2026. Crews are repairing more than 30 bridges on I-94 and I-394 between downtown Minneapolis and Highway 100. Eastbound I-394 remains reduced to two lanes between Louisiana Avenue and downtown through November, with traffic in the E-ZPass lanes and no toll or carpool option on those lanes.
Ramps still closed through November include I-394 to and from Penn Avenue, eastbound I-394 to westbound I-94, Cedar Lake Road to eastbound I-394, and Xenia Avenue or Park Place Boulevard to eastbound I-394. The Penn Avenue bridge over I-394 stays closed through November. Those standing limits are why one rain delay still matters: the corridor is already thin.
The September 22 release said only a few more weekend directional closures remained before a November wrap. The October 9 window is now one of those closures. MnDOT has not said October 12 is the last full shutdown.
Transit and Alternate Routes for Downtown Arrivals
MnDOT tells drivers to consider transit while I-394 work continues. Metro Transit’s Route 645 runs every day between Highway 12 in Wayzata and downtown Minneapolis. Plymouth Metrolink also serves the I-394 corridor. Those options matter most on October 9 to 12, when eastbound I-94 and I-394 next to downtown are both listed closed.
Lyndale, Hennepin, and the Loring Park streets will pick up overflow. If you can move a downtown meal or hotel check-in off that October weekend, do it. If you cannot, arrive from the south or east rather than forcing the west-side freeway weave. The delay is a routing change, not a city shutdown. Hotels and the riverfront stay open. Mark September 30 for the Highway 55 ramp, then rebuild the October 9 to 12 drive before you leave home.
Friday, September 25, at 10 p.m. is no longer the eastbound I-94 shutdown. That start time from the September 22 release is postponed. Drive the mainline this weekend unless 511 shows a new restriction.
Wednesday, September 30, is the Highway 55 ramp gate. From that date through Monday, October 12, use Lyndale Avenue to reach eastbound I-394 instead of the 55-to-I-94 ramp.
Friday, October 9, at 10 p.m. is the stacked closure. Eastbound I-94 between Highway 55 and I-394, plus both directions of I-394 between downtown and I-94, are listed closed through 5 a.m. Monday, October 12.
Is eastbound I-94 in Minneapolis closed this weekend?
No. MnDOT postponed the September 25 to 28 eastbound closure between Highway 55 and I-394. The new window is 10 p.m. Friday, October 9, through 5 a.m. Monday, October 12.
Why did MnDOT delay the I-94 Minneapolis closure?
FOX 9 reported that MnDOT delayed the work because bridge patching and sealing need dry conditions, and rain was forecast Friday night and Saturday. The project page now shows the October dates.
What is the I-94 detour on October 9 to 12?
MnDOT posts Highway 55 to Highway 100 to I-394 for the eastbound I-94 closure between Highway 55 and I-394. That weekend I-394 itself is also listed closed next to downtown, so confirm 511 before you follow the loop.
When does the Highway 55 ramp to I-94 close?
The ramp from Highway 55 to eastbound I-94 is listed closed Wednesday, September 30, through Monday, October 12. The detour is Lyndale Avenue to eastbound I-394 until that I-394 segment also closes on October 9.
Will westbound I-94 stay open in October?
The September 22 release said westbound I-94 would stay open during the original September weekend. MnDOT has not repeated that promise for October 9 to 12. Check the project page and 511 before you assume a westbound through route.
Where do I check live Minneapolis freeway status?
Use 511mn.org for current conditions. MnDOT says the I-94 and I-394 project page is not updated over the weekend or overnight.
