Hyatt and American End Perks: What Survives Into 2027?

Hyatt and American Airlines are ending their enhanced loyalty partnership, but the remaining benefits do not disappear on one date. In a September 9 announcement, Hyatt says members must link their accounts by November 15 to preserve eligible partner earning opportunities, with American’s qualifying window continuing into February 2027 and Hyatt’s ending this December.

The immediate job is to check which program is awarding the benefit, not rush into a flight or hotel booking because of a breakup headline. Travelers weighing airline status against other rewards should also distinguish a free checked bag from permission to pack a heavier one: our American Airlines checked-bag size and weight guide explains the usual 62-inch and 50-pound benchmarks and the route, cabin and status exceptions.

At a Glance
  • Change: The enhanced Hyatt and American Airlines relationship is ending.
  • Linking deadline: November 15, 2026; Hyatt specifies 11:59:59 p.m. Central for the AAdvantage eligibility cutoff.
  • Hyatt earning window: Eligible AAdvantage awards through Milestone Rewards remain earnable through December 31, 2026.
  • American earning window: Eligible Hyatt awards through Loyalty Point Rewards remain earnable through February 28, 2027.
  • Surviving option: Earn 500 American miles instead of Hyatt points on eligible Hyatt stays.

Three Deadlines, Not One Benefits Shutdown

November 15 is the account-linking checkpoint, not a universal last day to earn or use every award. Hyatt’s notice explicitly preserves earning, selection and redemption of eligible benefits for the remainder of each program’s current earning year, including the normal period for choosing an award after it has been earned.

That produces two different earning calendars because the programs do not finish their years together: World of Hyatt members can earn American awards through Milestone Rewards until December 31, while AAdvantage members can earn Hyatt awards through Loyalty Point Rewards until February 28. Someone pursuing both programs should track the benefit under the program that creates it, rather than label everything with the November linking date.

Gary Leff’s original reporting at View from the Wing says American confirmed it would not renew the agreement when the contract ends in November. His report also distinguishes that contract decision from the remaining member earning windows, a useful warning against treating a corporate end date as an immediate cancellation of rewards already in progress.

The Reward Depends on Which Program You Earn Through

For American members, the affected relationship includes hotel status and free-night award choices accessed through Loyalty Point Rewards. The airline’s current rewards page lists Hyatt Discoverist at 100,000 Loyalty Points, Explorist as an option at 175,000, and a Category 1 to 4 free-night choice beginning at 400,000; those are distinct thresholds, not benefits available merely for linking accounts.

For Hyatt members, the partner options sit within a different menu of Milestone Rewards. Hyatt’s published program description includes Preferred Seat coupons at the 20- and 30-night milestones and Main Cabin Extra coupons at 40 and 50 nights, with specified Base Point alternatives; the latter seats offer additional legroom, whereas a preferred location alone should not be sold as extra space.

The programs’ tier names and reward currencies make this easy to misread. AAdvantage Loyalty Points, redeemable American miles, Hyatt Base Points and Hyatt redeemable points perform different jobs, so a balance displayed in one account is not automatically evidence that a threshold in the other program has been reached.

A member deciding between a partner perk and another milestone choice should compare the trips already planned. Two seat coupons may be useful for an upcoming eligible American flight, while a hotel reward may better fit a booked stay; choosing a disappearing option simply because it is disappearing can still leave the traveler with something they cannot use.

Earning, Choosing and Using an Award Are Separate Steps

American’s published 2026 Loyalty Point Rewards rules allow qualifying members to select rewards through March 31, 2027. That selection period is distinct from the February 28 earning cutoff stated in the partnership announcement, so the end of earning does not mean every unselected eligible reward must be chosen the same night.

Selection also is not redemption. A free-night certificate, seating coupon or status award can carry its own validity and application conditions, and Hyatt’s announcement preserves the standard time to select an earned award rather than announcing one replacement expiration date for every instrument.

For an award already in an account, read its individual expiration and eligible-use instructions before changing plans. The September 9 announcement does not say all Hyatt points or American miles are expiring, does not cancel ordinary hotel reservations or airline tickets, and does not state that unrelated benefits earned directly through either program are being abolished.

This separation is particularly important for a trip crossing the year-end boundary. A December hotel stay, January flight and reward chosen after qualification can involve different clocks; check the earning rule, selection deadline and intended travel date independently instead of assuming that one valid booking confirms the entire sequence.

The 500-Mile Hotel Option Continues

One familiar hotel-earning option survives the broader partnership ending: Hyatt says eligible stays can still earn 500 AAdvantage miles in place of World of Hyatt points. Members use that option by providing their AAdvantage number at check-in, and the notice explicitly says it continues after the enhanced relationship concludes.

The words “in place of” matter to the cost decision. This is not 500 additional miles layered on top of normal Hyatt points, so travelers should compare the points they would otherwise earn on that eligible stay with the airline miles before selecting a currency.

The notice also does not restore the former reciprocal points-earning arrangement. Hyatt’s program page dates the end of that older linked-elite earning benefit to December 31, 2024; describing today’s announcement as the first end of that double earning would merge two different changes and misstate what members have actually been receiving.

For a traveler who rarely stays with Hyatt but regularly redeems American miles, the continuing option may still deserve a look. For someone working toward a hotel reward, it may not, and the existence of an airline-earning choice is not enough to conclude that booking a more expensive hotel produces a saving.

Check the Link Before Changing Travel Plans

Start with the existing account connection and the rewards currently available, then compare any remaining qualification effort with actual travel needs. The linking deadline is a reason to verify participation, not evidence that an extra hotel night, flight or purchase will earn more value than it costs.

Use the programs’ own account pages for that check and review the terms attached to the exact award under consideration. For members whose accounts are already linked, Leff reports no need to link again; the official requirement is to have the connection in place by the cutoff, not repeatedly create it.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Have not linked accounts Complete the connection by November 15 and check the Central time cutoff.
Earn American awards through Hyatt Use December 31 as the remaining earning deadline.
Earn Hyatt awards through American Track February 28 earning and the applicable reward-selection window separately.
Already hold an award Read its own expiration and use conditions, not just the partnership headline.

The strongest response to the announcement is a small account review before a large spending decision. A preserved benefit has value only when its eligibility, booking conditions and intended trip line up.

Planning Impact

November 15 is the linking checkpoint. Confirm the accounts are connected before the published cutoff.

December 31 and February 28 are different earning checkpoints. Match the deadline to the program awarding the benefit.

Each award keeps its own use conditions. Review selection and redemption separately before relying on a perk for travel.
