HX Expeditions has rolled its guest app across MS Fridtjof Nansen, MS Roald Amundsen, MS Fram, and MS Spitsbergen, according to a September 1, 2026 report in Seatrade Cruise News. That is the current answer to where the new app works, and it is the change that matters if you already hold an HX booking on one of those four ships.
The same report says 24-hour Grab and Go stations are now on Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen, and Spitsbergen. Travelers comparing small-ship Norway itineraries on Deep Arrival’s Norway small ship cruise guide should treat those three names as the ships with the new snack stations, not the whole HX fleet.
- App ships: Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen, Fram, and Spitsbergen, per Seatrade on September 1, 2026.
- Grab and Go: 24/7 stations on Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen, and Spitsbergen only.
- Galapagos exception: HX’s own FAQ says the app is not on MS Santa Cruz II.
- What it does: Restaurant reservations, excursions, daily programs, and live itinerary updates.
- Traveler step: Download the HX Expeditions app before you board, then connect to ship Wi-Fi for full features.
What Seatrade says is now live
Seatrade quotes Stefan Engl, HX’s senior vice president for guest experience operations, on a package of enhancements that starts before embarkation. Guests get a personalised email with a PDF of voyage information and a digital landing page tied to their booking, sailing, and cabin.
The new app is the onboard half of that package. Seatrade says it is now rolled out across the four named ships and lets guests make restaurant reservations, browse and book excursions, read daily programs, and follow expedition announcements.
Grab and Go is narrower. It is listed on three ships, not four, as a 24-hour station with breakfast bowls, sandwiches, and small sweets in reusable glass containers, and Fram is in the app list but out of the Grab and Go list.
HX also added Vinoble Cosmetics spa treatments on the four app ships, with suite guests getting complimentary products in the cabin. Groundtruth recycled-material bags are for sale on board, which are shopping notes rather than a reason to change a polar itinerary.
How that lines up with HX’s own app FAQ
HX’s public help centre already tells guests to download the HX Expeditions app before boarding. It says the app handles online check-in and a digital boarding pass on land, then unlocks the full feature set once the phone is on the ship’s Wi-Fi.
The same FAQ says the app is available across the fleet except MS Santa Cruz II in the Galapagos, which is broader than Seatrade’s four-ship rollout sentence. Do not treat the Seatrade list as a ban on other Arctic or Antarctic ships. Treat Santa Cruz II as the named exception.
Remote Wi-Fi is the operational catch. HX tells guests to download the app at home because polar connectivity can be limited, and a first install in the ice may leave you with only a boarding pass.
The company’s Fridtjof Nansen ship page remains the place to confirm which vessel you actually booked. The app does not replace the ship name on your confirmation.
What a recent sailing already showed on Fridtjof Nansen
German specialist site CruiseTricks independently described the HX app on a Fridtjof Nansen sailing as the information centre for the ship, including restaurant menus, reservations, and the daily program. That report dates the app as new in July 2026 and still settling in.
CruiseTricks also photographed Grab and Go fridges near the Science Center, with small dishes and fruit to take away. That onboard account is useful confirmation that the stations exist on Fridtjof Nansen. It is not a fleet census, and it does not add Fram to the Grab and Go list.
The practical translation is simple. If you sail Fridtjof Nansen, expect both the app and a 24-hour snack station. If you sail Fram, expect the app and do not assume the same fridge wall.
If you sail Santa Cruz II, keep paper or the old briefing loop. Reservations still matter at peak lunch and dinner in Aune, and CruiseTricks advised booking through the app even for the whole voyage.
How to use the app without fighting polar Wi-Fi
Download HX Expeditions from the Apple App Store or Google Play before you leave home. Complete online check-in and save the digital boarding pass while you still have hotel Wi-Fi.
Once on board, connect to the ship’s network before you try to book an excursion or a table. The FAQ is explicit that the full feature set waits for that connection. Screenshot tomorrow’s daily program in case the link drops during a landing day.
Use the app for the things that change overnight: landing times, cancelled kayak slots, and restaurant openings. Do not use it as the only copy of your passport scan, insurance certificate, or parka size. Those still belong in your own files.
If you are connecting through Tromso after a coastal or expedition sailing, Deep Arrival’s Tromso cruise port guide is the land-side checklist. The HX app does not replace a taxi plan or a cathedral visit window.
What this does not change
This is not a new ship, a new polar season, or a new booking window. It is a guest-tool rollout on named vessels. Your fare, your landing slots, and your expedition parka rules stay on the existing confirmation.
It is also not a Hurtigruten Coastal Express change. HX and Hurtigruten are separate brands after the split. A Coastal Express ticket does not inherit this app or these Grab and Go stations.
Deep Arrival’s earlier HX note on the first commercial call at Old Harbor, Alaska is a different stream. An Alaska landing does not tell you whether Fram has a 24-hour snack fridge.
Watch for two later facts only: whether HX puts Grab and Go on Fram, and whether Santa Cruz II ever gets the app. Until then, use the four-ship app list and the three-ship snack list as published on September 1.
| If you are | What to do |
|---|---|
| Booked on Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen, or Spitsbergen | Download the app before you fly. Expect both live programs and 24/7 Grab and Go. |
| Booked on Fram | Download the app. Do not assume a 24-hour snack station unless HX later adds Fram to that list. |
| Booked on Santa Cruz II | HX’s FAQ excludes this Galapagos ship from the app. Keep paper check-in and daily briefs. |
| Still choosing a Norway small ship | Treat the app as a comfort feature, not a reason to pick HX over another expedition line. |
| Sailing Hurtigruten Coastal Express | This HX rollout does not apply. Keep the Hurtigruten tools named on your ticket. |
- Fram snacks: Grab and Go is not listed on Fram in the September 1 Seatrade account.
- Santa Cruz II: Still the named app exception on HX’s FAQ.
- Pre-board download: HX says polar Wi-Fi can be too thin for a first install at sea.
- Restaurant bookings: Use the app for Aune lunch and dinner before peak landings.
- Brand split: Hurtigruten Coastal Express is a different company and a different app story.
If you already hold an HX polar ticket, the useful work is a 10-minute download and a check of which of the four ships you boarded. The rest of the expedition, from Zodiac slots to parka rules, has not changed because the snack fridge got a glass lid.
Where does the HX Expeditions app work now?
Seatrade reported on September 1, 2026, that the app is rolled out on Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen, Fram, and Spitsbergen. HX’s FAQ says the app is available fleetwide except MS Santa Cruz II.
Which HX ships have 24/7 Grab and Go?
Seatrade lists Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen, and Spitsbergen. Fram is in the app list and is not in that Grab and Go list.
Should I download the app before I fly?
Yes. HX says to install it before boarding because ship Wi-Fi in remote regions can be limited, and the full feature set waits until you are connected on board.
Does this change Hurtigruten Coastal Express sailings?
No. HX Expeditions and Hurtigruten are separate brands. A Coastal Express ticket does not inherit this app or these snack stations.
Is MS Santa Cruz II included?
No. HX’s FAQ names MS Santa Cruz II, the Galapagos ship, as the app exception.
