Houston I 10 East Closure Affects Cedar Bayou Overnight

Both directions of Interstate 10 East are scheduled to close near Cedar Bayou on Saturday night, cutting the main lanes between Cedar Lane and Bayou Drive. Houston TranStar lists the full closure from 7 PM July 18 until 6 AM Sunday, July 19, with separate detours for eastbound and westbound traffic.

The closure affects the East Freeway in the Baytown area rather than the entire I 10 corridor across Houston. Drivers crossing the east side of the region overnight should decide before reaching the work zone whether to follow the posted frontage road route, shift the timing of the trip, or wait for the scheduled morning reopening.

Where and when I 10 East closes

Houston TranStar’s current construction schedule identifies a total closure of the eastbound and westbound main lanes from Cedar Lane to Bayou Drive. The listed window begins at 7 PM Saturday and ends at 6 AM Sunday, creating an eleven hour overnight interruption through the Cedar Bayou area.

The official board also lists a separate full closure in both directions at Garth Road from 10 PM to 6 AM. That second point matters because a driver who clears the Cedar Bayou detour may still encounter another main lane interruption closer to central Baytown later in the night.

An independent Houston Chronicle report also describes the East Freeway as closing twice over the weekend. The official TranStar schedule remains the authority for the exact limits, times, detours and any same day change.

How the eastbound Cedar Bayou detour works

Houston TranStar directs eastbound traffic to exit at Magnolia and continue on the frontage road. The posted sequence then turns right on River Road, left on Market Street and left on Monmouth before drivers make an immediate right to return to the I 10 frontage road.

That sequence moves traffic onto local streets instead of carrying it straight along the closed main lanes. Drivers should follow the signs installed at the work zone because the written route can be harder to interpret at night, and a navigation app may suggest a different path before it receives the closure update.

The detour also means a trip can take longer than the distance alone suggests. Merging traffic, signal cycles and vehicles returning to the freeway can add delay even when the local streets remain open, so a tight arrival deadline should not depend on the normal I 10 travel time.

What westbound drivers should expect

For westbound traffic, the official direction is simpler: exit at Magnolia, travel along the frontage road and use the Cedar Bayou entrance ramp to return to I 10. Drivers should still expect the frontage road to carry more traffic than usual during the full main lane closure.

The separate closure at Garth Road begins three hours later, at 10 PM, and is also scheduled to end at 6 AM. Houston TranStar directs traffic there to exit and reenter at the next entrance ramp, so a westbound driver may encounter more than one stop and merge while crossing the Baytown side of the corridor.

The two closure points should not be read as a single continuous shutdown of every lane from Cedar Bayou through Houston. They are specific work locations with specific detours, and the official board should be checked again if the trip begins after crews are scheduled to set the closures.

Nearby work can change the practical delay

The same TranStar schedule lists alternating westbound lane closures between Wayside Drive and Kress Street from 9 PM to 5 AM through the morning of July 27. It also lists the westbound entrance ramp from Wayside and the exit ramp to Lathrop Street as closed nightly during that period.

Those projects sit west of the Cedar Bayou closure and can affect a longer trip into Houston even after the main detour is complete. A driver heading toward downtown should therefore review the complete route, not only the Cedar Lane to Bayou Drive segment, before deciding how much time to allow.

Travelers with a fixed event, hotel arrival, airport pickup or long distance connection have less flexibility. They should add a buffer based on the current map, tell the receiving party about the planned closure and avoid committing to a precise arrival time drawn from an ordinary Saturday route estimate.

Using a different highway is not automatically faster because parallel routes may absorb diverted traffic. The safer comparison is to check the official closure board and a live traffic map immediately before departure, then choose between the posted detour and a wider route using current conditions rather than a standing assumption.
