St. Croix River Bridge at Osceola – Highway 243, Wisconsin – Minnesota · Tony Webster · CC BY-SA 2.0 · edited
The Minnesota Department of Transportation now lists the Highway 243 Osceola Bridge over the St. Croix River as closed from mid-October 2026 through fall 2027 while crews remove the 1953 span and build a new one in the same place. That is a year without the shortest river crossing between Franconia Township, Minnesota, and the village of Osceola, Wisconsin.
Drivers who use this bridge for work, weekend cabins, or boat-launch days should treat mid-October as the hard cutoff, then pick the Highway 8 Taylors Falls detour or the Highway 36 Stillwater crossing before the gates go up. MnDOT’s project page is the live schedule, and it already shows one facility closed. Twin Cities drivers already navigating this weekend’s eastbound I-394 shutdown should not assume the Osceola crossing is a clean backup into Wisconsin.
- Bridge: Highway 243 Osceola Bridge over the St. Croix River.
- Closed: mid-October 2026 through fall 2027.
- Detours: Highway 8 at Taylors Falls, or Highway 36 at Stillwater.
- Meeting: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, Osceola High School.
- Already closed: north boat launch at Osceola Landing through late summer 2028.
Mid-October Starts a Year Without the Osceola Bridge
MnDOT and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation are replacing the jointly owned 1953 bridge. The agencies decided not to reuse any part of the old structure. The new span will be a concrete beam bridge with three piers on the same alignment, plus a shared-use path on the north side from Osceola Landing into the village.
MnDOT’s traffic board puts the river crossing out of service from mid-October 2026 through fall 2027. An August contractor update, reported by the Pioneer Press, said weather permitting the new bridge could open in late 2027, with overall construction running to fall 2028. Flooding and river levels can still move those dates.
This is not a nightly lane drop. No passenger cars, trucks, or bikes will use Highway 243 across the water for about a year. If your trip assumes a five-minute hop from Minnesota Highway 95 into downtown Osceola, rewrite the trip now rather than discovering the barricade on a Friday night.
Detours Run Through Taylors Falls or Stillwater
MnDOT posts two official river crossings. The north option uses the Highway 8 Taylors Falls bridge: Highway 95, Highway 8, Highway 35, then back to Highway 243. The south option uses the Highway 36 Stillwater crossing: Highway 95, Highway 36, Highway 64, Highway 35, Highway 64B, Highway 35, and Highway 243.
The Pioneer Press, citing transportation officials, put the extra drive at about 15 minutes to Taylors Falls and about 30 minutes to Oak Park Heights and Stillwater. Those times assume normal traffic. Fall-color weekends and snow days will stretch them.
Wisconsin DOT’s project page points drivers back to MnDOT for the live map. Print the detour before you lose cell service in the river valley. 511mn.org remains the real-time check once snow or flooding hits the posted routes. Add fuel and a bathroom stop on Highway 8 or Highway 36 because Osceola’s usual five-minute hop will not be there to save a late tank. Buses, farm equipment, and leaf-weekend traffic all share those two remaining river bridges.
Monday’s Osceola Meeting Is the Last Planning Stop
MnDOT and WisDOT will staff an in-person meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 21, at Osceola High School. There is no formal presentation. Staff will review layouts, walk through the construction plan, and answer when the bridge will actually close to traffic.
If you need a date more precise than “mid-October,” this is the room. The MnDOT meetings page is the event record. The Sept. 10 news release and the meetings page disagree on the street number for the high school, so navigate to Osceola High School itself rather than trusting one address string.
Bring the trips you cannot move: school buses, medical appointments in the Twin Cities, and fall hunting or cabin weekends. Ask whether any short-term openings are planned. MnDOT has already said seasonal flooding can change the calendar.
The North Boat Launch Is Already Closed Through 2028
The Osceola Landing north boat launch and parking lot closed at 8 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 14, and MnDOT lists that closure through late summer 2028. Crews will stage equipment there. The south boat launch and parking lot stay open. Picnic areas, restrooms, and other river access at the landing remain available, according to the agencies.
That is a named-facility fact, not a claim about every outfitter in Osceola. If you launch from the north ramp, you already need a different put-in. River traffic in the work zone should follow the buoys once the temporary access road is in the water.
The project also includes a new pedestrian and bicycle path linking Osceola Landing to the village once the new bridge opens. Until then, people who walk or roll across the 1953 span lose that crossing with the cars.
The New Bridge Adds a Shared Path Across the St. Croix
The replacement is a roughly 25 million dollar job funded to keep a reliable Highway 243 link between Washington and Chisago counties in Minnesota and Polk County, Wisconsin. Federal Highway Administration issued a Finding of No Significant Impact and found the project does not adversely affect the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.
Dive teams began moving native mussels out of the work area in August. That work is why the north landing closed in mid-September, weeks before the deck itself goes dark. The sequence matters if you are trying to squeeze in one more river weekend before mid-October.
Once the new span opens, the payoff is a wider, modern crossing plus the shared path. Until fall 2027, the payoff is a longer drive. Plan the detour, go to the Monday meeting if the exact close date changes your bookings, and keep 511 in the car when the river rises.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Cross Highway 243 into Osceola on weekdays | Switch to the Highway 8 Taylors Falls detour before mid-October; budget about 15 extra minutes. |
| Come from the south Twin Cities | Use the Highway 36 Stillwater crossing; budget about 30 extra minutes. |
| Need the exact close date for a booking | Go to the 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 21 meeting at Osceola High School, or watch the MnDOT project page. |
| Launch boats at Osceola Landing | Use the south ramp. The north launch is closed through late summer 2028. |
Mid-October 2026 is the bridge deadline. Highway 243 over the St. Croix is listed closed from then through fall 2027.
Sept. 21 is the last staffed briefing. The 5 to 7 p.m. Osceola High School meeting is where MnDOT says it will discuss when the deck actually closes.
Late summer 2028 is the north-launch window. That ramp is already shut and stays shut through construction staging.
When does the Highway 243 Osceola Bridge close?
MnDOT lists the St. Croix crossing closed from mid-October 2026 through fall 2027. Weather and river levels can still move the date.
What is the Highway 243 detour?
Northbound use Highway 8 at Taylors Falls. Southbound use Highway 36 at Stillwater. Official extra drive times are about 15 and 30 minutes.
Is there a public meeting about the Osceola Bridge?
Yes. MnDOT and WisDOT staff Osceola High School from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 21, with no formal presentation.
Can I still launch a boat at Osceola Landing?
The south launch stays open. The north boat launch and parking lot closed Sept. 14 and remain closed through late summer 2028.
When does the new Highway 243 bridge open?
MnDOT’s board says the crossing returns in fall 2027. Broader construction runs through fall 2028.
Will bikes still cross the St. Croix at Osceola?
Not during the year-long closure. The new bridge will add a shared-use path on the north side when it opens.
