Great Smoky Mountains National Park will close two stretches of Little River Road from 7 AM to noon on Tuesday, September 15, and Thursday, September 17, while crews complete roadside maintenance, WVLT reported, citing park officials. The work sits on the main west-side corridor toward Cades Cove, Elkmont, and Metcalf Bottoms, so morning drivers should expect detours even though those destinations stay open.
The first closure is 48 hours away. Pick a start time and a backup route before you leave Great Smoky Mountains National Park, then layer in the same week’s Gatlinburg Spur lane work and LeConte Lodge airlift delays that WATE reported from the park. Recheck the park’s current conditions page the morning you drive.
- September 15, 7 AM to noon: Little River Road closes from the Townsend Wye to Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area.
- September 17, 7 AM to noon: Little River Road closes from Metcalf Bottoms to Elkmont Junction.
- Detour: Wears Valley Road (US 321); Cades Cove, Elkmont, and Metcalf Bottoms stay open with extra drive time.
- RV limit: Motorhomes, buses, and vans longer than 25 feet, plus any vehicle towing a trailer, cannot use Wear Cove Gap Road to the Metcalf Bottoms bridge.
- Same week: LeConte airlifts September 14 to 18 and Gatlinburg Spur single-lane work September 14 to 30.
Tuesday and Thursday Morning Closures on Little River Road
Park officials told WVLT that both Little River windows run 7 AM to noon. Tuesday, September 15, takes the western segment from the Townsend Wye to Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area. Thursday, September 17, takes the next segment from Metcalf Bottoms to Elkmont Junction. The two days are not a continuous shutdown. After noon each day, that stretch is scheduled to reopen.
The work is maintenance, not a storm washout. During those windows crews plan to mow and trim 24 miles of roadsides, clean 8.5 miles of drainage ditches, and repair 27 damaged shoulder areas, according to WVLT. Closing the road lets that work happen without traffic threading past mowers and shoulder crews on a narrow mountain corridor.
Little River Road is the scenic connector from Townsend toward The Sinks, Metcalf Bottoms, Elkmont, and Cades Cove. The closure hours overlap a typical sunrise loop. Shift the start later, or enter from another side of the park.
Wears Valley Road Is the Posted Detour
For the September 15 window, the park’s posted detour is Wears Valley Road (US 321) between Townsend and Line Springs Road, WVLT reported. For September 17, the detour is Wears Valley Road between Line Springs Road and Pigeon Forge. Those are surface roads outside the park, with towns, turns, and slower local traffic. Budget extra minutes even if your destination remains open.
WATE, citing the park, said Elkmont, Metcalf Bottoms, and Cades Cove stay reachable, with extra drive time. Do not cancel the day. Do not assume Little River Road is the fastest inbound path before noon on those two mornings.
If you are staying near Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge, the where to stay near Great Smoky Mountains choice already shapes which entrance you use. A Townsend-side lodge feels the Little River windows first. A Gatlinburg-side stay still has to thread the Spur work described below.
Oversized Vehicles Cannot Use Wear Cove Gap Road
The detour is not a full substitute for every vehicle. Park officials told WVLT that motorhomes, buses, and vans longer than 25 feet, as well as any passenger vehicle towing a trailer, are prohibited on Wear Cove Gap Road from the park boundary up to and including the Metcalf Bottoms bridge. That is a hard length limit, not a suggestion.
If you are driving a Class C, a long van, or a car with a cargo trailer, skip Wear Cove Gap. Time the inbound drive after noon on September 15 and September 17, or use a different entrance.
Ordinary cars can use the posted US 321 detour. RV and trailer traffic should treat those two mornings as a no-go for that west-side inbound pattern.
LeConte Airlifts Pause Lodge Access and Slow Newfound Gap
The Little River work is not the only timed delay this week. WATE reported that from Monday, September 14, through Friday, September 18, the park plans to airlift materials from the demolished LeConte Lodge Recreation building. Flights are scheduled between 9 AM and noon each day. September 19 to 25 are makeup days if weather stops the helicopter.
During those flight windows, LeConte Lodge will be closed to hikers for safety and to keep helicopter turnaround times short, WATE reported. Hikers on Mount LeConte can still use trails and overlooks around the top of the mountain. Flaggers at three locations near the lodge will pause people while loads move.
Drivers on Newfound Gap Road near the Oconaluftee Overlook should expect brief delays while the helicopter loads. That is the trans-park highway, not Little River Road. A Cades Cove plus Newfound Gap day can pick up both clocks.
Gatlinburg Spur Lane Closures Run Through September 30
WATE also reported stacked work on the Gatlinburg Spur, the 441 connector many visitors use between Gatlinburg and the park. From 7 AM to 7 PM on September 14 to 17, a single-lane closure is scheduled on the southbound Spur between the Gatlinburg Welcome Center and the Gatlinburg city limit for storm-damage repairs.
From 7 AM to 3:30 PM on September 14 to 16, shoulder closures are scheduled on the northbound and southbound acceleration ramps near Huskey Grove Bridge for utility surveys. Crews will work behind guardrails and medians. Then from 7 AM to 3:30 PM on September 21 through 30, single-lane closures are planned on the northbound and southbound lanes near Huskey Grove Bridge for utility work, starting southbound and then shifting northbound, with the northbound tunnel affected.
On September 25, WATE reported, Huskey Grove Bridge work is scheduled to end at noon and will not run over the weekend. This is a new window, not the July pattern in Deep Arrival’s earlier Gatlinburg Spur lane closures report.
How to Time a Smokies Drive This Week
Stack the clocks before you leave. Little River Road is closed only until noon on two mornings. The Spur’s southbound single-lane window runs 7 AM to 7 PM on September 14 to 17. LeConte airlifts concentrate 9 AM to noon.
A Townsend-to-Cades Cove morning on Tuesday or Thursday is the worst Little River overlap. A Gatlinburg-to-Sugarlands morning that week is more about the Spur.
If you are flying in, the closest airport to the Smoky Mountains choice still matters for which side of the park you reach first. McGhee Tyson in Knoxville points you toward Townsend and Little River. Asheville points you toward the North Carolina side and Newfound Gap. Neither airport changes the road clocks inside the park.
After noon on September 15 and September 17, Little River Road is scheduled to reopen. Use that if you can wait. If you cannot wait, take the posted US 321 detour in a vehicle that is legal on Wear Cove Gap, or skip the west-side loop until the afternoon.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Want Cades Cove before noon on September 15 or 17 in a regular car | Use the posted Wears Valley Road (US 321) detour and add drive time. The destinations stay open. |
| Are in a motorhome, long van, bus, or any vehicle towing a trailer | Do not use Wear Cove Gap Road. Enter after noon on those two days, or use a different park entrance. |
| Are crossing Newfound Gap between 9 AM and noon September 14 to 18 | Expect helicopter delays near Oconaluftee Overlook. LeConte Lodge itself is closed to hikers during flights. |
| Are driving the Gatlinburg Spur September 14 to 17 | Budget for a southbound single-lane closure from 7 AM to 7 PM, plus ramp shoulder work through September 16. |
September 15, 7 AM to noon is the first Little River gate. Townsend Wye to Metcalf Bottoms is closed. Take US 321 or wait until afternoon.
September 17, 7 AM to noon is the second Little River gate. Metcalf Bottoms to Elkmont Junction is closed. Same detour rules and the same 25-foot limit on Wear Cove Gap Road.
September 21 to 30 is the next Spur utility window. Single-lane work near Huskey Grove Bridge, including the northbound tunnel, after this week’s southbound storm-repair lane.
Is Cades Cove closed on September 15 and 17?
No. Park officials told WVLT and WATE that Cades Cove, Elkmont, and Metcalf Bottoms remain accessible. The change is extra drive time while Little River Road is closed from 7 AM to noon.
What time does Little River Road close in Great Smoky Mountains National Park?
Both maintenance windows run 7 AM to noon. Tuesday, September 15, closes Townsend Wye to Metcalf Bottoms. Thursday, September 17, closes Metcalf Bottoms to Elkmont Junction.
Can I take an RV on the Little River Road detour?
Not on Wear Cove Gap Road. Motorhomes, buses, and vans longer than 25 feet, and any vehicle towing a trailer, are prohibited from the park boundary through the Metcalf Bottoms bridge.
Will LeConte Lodge be open during the airlifts?
WATE reported the lodge will be closed to hikers during the 9 AM to noon flight windows September 14 to 18, with September 19 to 25 as makeup days. Trails and overlooks around the summit remain available.
