Almost every mountain road closure in the American West is a weather call. Grand Teton’s is a date, and this year it falls on a Sunday. The park closes the Teton Park Road and the Moose-Wilson Road on November 1 regardless of what the snow is doing, and reopens them on a schedule rather than when the plows finish.
That makes it plannable in a way that Yellowstone next door is not. It also means a warm dry first week of November buys you nothing at all.
- November 1: Teton Park Road closes from Taggart Lake Trailhead to Signal Mountain Lodge, until April 30.
- November 1: Moose-Wilson Road closes until mid May, and is unplowed in its middle section.
- Stays open: US 89/191 and US 26/287, plowed all winter from Jackson to Flagg Ranch.
- Watch out: the closed road opens to bikes the same day, and to skis from mid December.
A Closure With a Calendar, Not a Forecast
The park is explicit that the Teton Park Road and the Moose-Wilson Road close on a schedule while other roads close on conditions. Antelope Flats, Deadmans Bar, Grassy Lake, Pilgrim Creek, Schwabacher and Two Ocean all belong to the conditions group and can go at any point.
The stated reason for the two scheduled closures is not just snow clearing. The park closes them for recreational use and to provide corridors for wildlife, which is why the dates hold even in a mild autumn.
What November 1 Gives Back
The same sentence that closes the Teton Park Road to cars opens it to everyone else. From November 1 it is open to biking until it becomes snow covered, and in spring you can ride it again once the snow melts, up to April 30.
Pets are allowed on the road after November 1, and once snow arrives leashed pets can use the multi use lane. From mid December the road is groomed for skiing, snowshoeing and hiking. A closed road here is a road with different users, not an empty one.
The Highways Never Close
The through routes are unaffected. US 89/191 and US 26/287 are plowed and open for winter travel from the town of Jackson all the way to Flagg Ranch, just south of Yellowstone, which is what keeps the valley reachable in January.
What those highways do not give you is the Teton Park Road’s close range view of the range, or the Moose-Wilson corridor. Winter in Grand Teton is a valley floor experience unless you are on skis.
The facilities calendar runs on the same logic. The Jackson Hole tourism board notes that none of the park’s facilities are open year round, with campgrounds, restaurants and lodges reopening from mid April, and it puts winter in the park from November through March under an average of ten feet of snow at the lowest elevations.
Moose-Wilson Is Already Shut in Places
The November date is not the only thing to check before driving. The park’s September conditions list has the Moose-Wilson Road between the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve and Moose closed to all use, and Death Canyon Road and Trailhead closed to all use, both for construction.
North Park Road is open with delays of 15 minutes from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and up to an hour overnight. Taggart Lake Trailhead is partially open and Cottonwood Creek Picnic Area is closed, all construction related.
The Lake Is Lower Than the Roads Suggest
One more thing an autumn itinerary should absorb. Jackson Lake is drawn down, with the park publishing a September 2026 view of the lake without water from the Mud Flats Turnout, and the Signal Mountain and Colter Bay marinas and the Signal Mountain boat ramp all closed. Leeks Marina and boat ramp remain open.
Water levels here move with the previous winter’s snowpack and irrigation draw, so a boating plan made from summer photographs needs rechecking against the park’s own conditions page rather than a season guide.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Want to drive the Teton Park Road | Go before November 1. The date does not move for good weather. |
| Are visiting in November | US 89/191 and US 26/287 stay plowed to Flagg Ranch. Plan the valley floor, not the range road. |
| Ride a bike | The Teton Park Road opens to bikes on November 1 and stays rideable until it is snow covered. |
| Are heading for Moose-Wilson | Check current conditions first. Part of it is already closed to all use for construction. |
| Planned to boat Jackson Lake | Two marinas and one ramp are closed and the lake is drawn down. Leeks is the one still open. |
November 1 is fixed, so the trip is plannable. Unlike most western park roads, you are not waiting on a forecast.
The closure is a handover. Bikes from November 1, skis from mid December, pets throughout.
Check conditions as well as the calendar. Construction has already closed part of Moose-Wilson and Death Canyon Road to all use.
