Grand Canyon National Park will close a section of the North Kaibab Trail at 11:59 p.m. on October 15, 2026. After that night, traditional rim-to-rim hiking is not possible until the park reopens the corridor, now listed as about February 2027.
The park's key hiking messages page, last updated August 12, 2026, states the fact in plain language. If a 2026 rim-to-rim is the trip, the last legal through-hike day is October 15.

What closes, and what stays open
The April 29 park news release, still mirrored on the August 12 key-messages board, closes the North Kaibab Trail between Redwall Bridge and the northern end of Cottonwood Campground. Redwall Bridge sits about 2.5 miles north of Manzanita Rest Area.
The reason is Transcanyon Waterline rehabilitation. Crews will work in a narrow corridor with heavy equipment. The park says there are no alternative routes through that section.
Cottonwood Campground is scheduled to stay open. Water there turns off on October 15. Overnight hikers must treat creek water. Backcountry permits remain on Recreation.gov.
The rest of the North Kaibab Trail is expected to stay open in two pieces: from the North Kaibab Trailhead south to Redwall Bridge, and from Phantom Ranch north to the north end of Cottonwood. You can hike a stub. You cannot walk through.
South Kaibab, Bright Angel, the Black Bridge, the Silver Bridge, and the Tonto connector between Tipoff and Havasupai Gardens are listed as currently open. Those south-side trails do not replace a rim-to-rim once the North Kaibab gap is taped.
What is true on the ground today
The August 12 water board is not the same as the October closure. Inner-canyon taps at Manzanita, Cottonwood, Bright Angel Campground, Phantom, and the south corridor resthouses are listed ON. The August 3 pipeline break that emptied several of those taps has been repaired enough to restore them.
North Rim water is a different problem. All North Rim water is OFF. The North Kaibab Trailhead and Supai Tunnel have no water. The General Store sells single bottles and gallon jugs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily.
That matters if you are hiking the upper North Kaibab before October 15. Carry treatment and do not count on trailhead spigots. The October hard closure is still weeks away. The North Rim dry taps are already in force.
Heat risk at Phantom Ranch is listed as Major on the same page. Do not treat a last-chance rim-to-rim as a casual bucket-list jog. August and September inner-canyon heat remains a medical risk even when every tap is on.
The same key-messages page still lists flash-flood risk on the lower North Kaibab and around Phantom Ranch, plus falling rock and limited shade in the burned stretch from Supai Tunnel to the North Kaibab Trailhead. A through-hike before October 15 still has to respect those hazards. The calendar gap does not cancel the weather.

Who should move now
If you already hold October 16 or later rim-to-rim lodging or shuttle reservations, change them. The park is not offering a detour. A North Rim start that cannot reach Cottonwood is not a rim-to-rim.
If you still want 2026 rim-to-rim, the open window is now through October 15. Book the corridor nights, the trans-canyon shuttle or a car spot, and a weather-aware start time. Do not wait for a cooler late-October date. That date will be closed.
If you only want a North Rim day hike, the upper North Kaibab to Redwall Bridge is expected to stay open after October 15. Confirm that stub on the key-messages page the week you travel. Construction can expand.
If you only want a South Rim corridor hike, Bright Angel and South Kaibab remain the plan. The October closure does not shut the South Rim. It shuts the connection.
National Parks Traveler reported the same October 15 start, the February 2027 target, and the lack of a detour when the park first posted the April 29 news release. The August 12 refresh is the reason to treat it as a live countdown, not an old construction memo.

How to use the next 60 days
Decide in this order: through-hike or not, then dates, then water plan. A through-hike has to finish by October 15. A one-rim trip can wait and should still carry treatment.
If you go before the closure, watch both boards. The August 12 water list can change after another pipeline break. The October 15 hard closure is the dated construction window, not a weather call.
If you skip 2026, put February 2027 on the watch list, not the calendar. The park said approximately February 2027. That is a target, not a ticketed reopen day.
Trans-canyon shuttles and one-way car spots should be booked only against dates that still connect. A North Rim lodge night after October 15 can still be a rim stay. It cannot be the start of a legal through-hike until the gap reopens.
Permit math changes too. A Cottonwood night after October 15 is an out-and-back or a Phantom-side trip, not a mid-canyon waypoint on a rim-to-rim. Do not keep a mid-corridor reservation that only made sense as a through-hike connector.
A Phantom Ranch or Bright Angel Campground night after October 15 is still a South Rim corridor stay if you want that hike. It does not restore a legal rim-to-rim. Those beds sit south of the closed North Kaibab gap and cannot replace the missing connector.
Do not invent a rim-to-river-to-rim workaround that sneaks around Redwall Bridge. The park closed that section to all public access. The legal trip after October 15 is a stub hike or a South Rim corridor day, not a homemade bypass.
