Grand Canyon Cape Royal Access Ends Oct 15

Grand Canyon National Park will shift the North Rim into modified fall operations on Oct. 15, 2026, and the change hits the two scenic drives most visitors use to reach Cape Royal and Point Imperial. In a Sept. 30 news release, the National Park Service said Cape Royal Road and Point Imperial Road will close from sunset on Oct. 15 through sunrise on Nov. 3 for Federal Highway Administration repair work.

Anyone holding a mid October North Rim day must recast the itinerary now: those overlooks go dark for 19 nights, the General Store and campground follow within hours, and there is already no fuel inside the park. Use the Grand Canyon National Park guide to keep South Rim and North Rim plans on separate calendars, because this notice does not reopen Hermit Road or other South Rim shuttle limits.

At a Glance
  • Road closure: Cape Royal Road and Point Imperial Road, sunset Oct. 15 through sunrise Nov. 3, 2026.
  • Store and campground: General Store closes 4 p.m. Oct. 15; North Rim Campground closes the morning of Oct. 16.
  • Fuel: North Rim gas station closed Sept. 19; no fuel is available inside the park.
  • Trail: North Kaibab Trail remains closed after the Aug. 29 flash flood.
  • Season gate: State Route 67 entrance closes at sunset Nov. 30, or after the first major snowstorm.

Cape Royal and Point Imperial Close at Sunset Oct 15

The two roads are the only paved drives to Point Imperial, Cape Royal, Roosevelt Point, Walhalla Overlook, and Angels Window. Once they close at sunset on Oct. 15, those viewpoints stay out of reach until sunrise on Nov. 3, while Highway 67 into the North Rim developed area can still carry day visitors until the later season gate.

The park said the window is required so crews can complete critical road repair and rehabilitation with a safe work zone. Flagstaff station KAFF, reporting the same notice on gcmaz.com, placed the same Oct. 15 through Nov. 3 dates on both scenic roads.

If Cape Royal or Point Imperial is the reason you chose the North Rim, finish that drive on Oct. 14 or earlier, or shift the trip to dates after Nov. 3 while the rim is still open for day use. After Nov. 3, check the park conditions page before you leave Jacob Lake, because snow and fallen trees can close the same roads again without a new press release.

North Rim Services Shut on a Tight Calendar

The same Oct. 15 transition empties the small service cluster that makes a North Rim day workable. The North Rim Backcountry Information Center closes at 12 p.m. on Oct. 15. Permits stay available at the South Rim Backcountry Information Center and online through Recreation.gov, so a North Rim walk that still needs a permit has to be arranged from the other rim or the website before you drive north.

Aramark’s General Store closes for the season at 4 p.m. on Oct. 15. The North Rim Campground, also operated by Aramark, closes the morning of Oct. 16. The park’s North Rim gas station already closed on Sept. 19, and the release is explicit: fuel is not available within the park.

That fuel line is the booking change most drivers miss. Fill in Jacob Lake, about 45 miles north of the rim, or in Fredonia, Arizona, or Kanab, Utah, before you enter. Carry food and water for the full day, because the store will already be dark if you arrive after 4 p.m. on Oct. 15, and it stays closed through winter.

North Kaibab Trail Stays Closed After the August Flood

The fall road work sits on top of a longer inner-canyon shutdown. The North Kaibab Trail remains closed in its entirety after the Aug. 29 flash flood, which the park said damaged the trail, bridges, and other infrastructure in Bright Angel Canyon. This notice does not give a reopening date for that trail.

Do not treat a North Rim day in late October as a rim-to-river hiking window. Day hiking that still exists on the North Rim is limited to routes the park currently lists as open, and several fire-damaged trails around the former lodge area have stayed closed through the 2026 season. Confirm the live trail list the morning you drive, not the list you saved in May.

South Rim corridor plans are a different calendar. Hermit Road access remains on its own fall schedule, covered in Deep Arrival’s Hermit Road closure report. A Cape Royal closure does not change a South Rim village day, and a South Rim shuttle limit does not restore Point Imperial.

Highway 67 Gate and Winter Driving Before Nov 30

The North Rim entrance gate on State Route 67 will close at sunset on Nov. 30, 2026, or after the first major snowstorm, whichever comes first. Visitors who still want a North Rim day between Nov. 3 and that gate date can use Highway 67, but they should expect snow, ice, and rain on the plateau and extremely limited emergency response.

Superintendent Ed Keable said visitors should plan ahead, monitor changing conditions, and travel self-sufficiently, and that the temporary road closures support essential repairs while protecting visitors and work crews. He also told travelers to carry adequate food, water, fuel, and emergency supplies and to use extra caution as winter weather arrives.

For current highway conditions, the park points drivers to Arizona Highway Information at 1-888-411-ROAD (7623). Pair that call with the park’s own road line if you are already committed to the drive. Nearby lodging, food, and fuel remain at Jacob Lake; additional rooms sit in Fredonia and Kanab, which is the practical overnight base once the campground closes on Oct. 16.

Recasting an October North Rim Day Around the Closures

A North Rim visit before sunset on Oct. 15 can still include both scenic roads if you start early enough to finish Cape Royal and Point Imperial before the gates go up. After that sunset, keep the day to Highway 67, the remaining open day-use areas, and viewpoints you can reach without those two roads. Do not count on a last-minute campground site for Oct. 16 or later.

Fly-drive travelers should pick the airport that matches the rim they can actually use. The closest airport to the Grand Canyon by rim still matters: Flagstaff and Phoenix serve the South Rim more cleanly, while a North Rim day is a long drive from either, and it gets longer once you add a Jacob Lake fuel stop and a 4 p.m. store cutoff.

If the trip is a longer desert loop, rebuild the North Rim night around Jacob Lake or Kanab instead of the park campground, and keep Cape Royal for a date before Oct. 15 or after Nov. 3. The Arizona road trip loop still works when the North Rim is a daylight stop rather than an overnight inside the park. Recheck the NPS conditions page the morning you roll south from Jacob Lake.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Need Cape Royal or Point Imperial on this trip Drive those roads on Oct. 14 or earlier, or after sunrise Nov. 3 while Highway 67 is still open.
Hold a North Rim Campground reservation for Oct. 16 or later Move the night to Jacob Lake, Fredonia, or Kanab. The campground closes the morning of Oct. 16.
Arrive after 4 p.m. on Oct. 15 Bring all food, water, and a full tank. The General Store is closed and there is no park fuel.
Planned a North Kaibab descent Cancel that hike. The trail remains closed after the Aug. 29 flood, with no date in this notice.
Planning Impact

Sunset Oct. 15 is the scenic-drive gate. Cape Royal Road and Point Imperial Road close then and stay closed through sunrise Nov. 3 for FHWA repairs.

4 p.m. Oct. 15 is the last store hour. After that, and after the campground closes on the morning of Oct. 16, the North Rim is a self-sufficient day-use stop.

Sunset Nov. 30 is the season gate. State Route 67 closes then, or after the first major snowstorm, whichever comes first.
