Glacier Gorge Trailhead Closes Sept. 28: Use Bear Lake

Glacier Gorge Trailhead and its parking area in Rocky Mountain National Park will close to all uses during two work periods beginning September 28, 2026. The National Park Service announced the erosion repairs September 9 and directs hikers bound for Alberta Falls, Mills Lake and Loch Vale to start at Bear Lake Trailhead instead.

The closure applies to shuttle buses as well as private vehicles and people on foot, so taking the bus does not preserve access to the usual starting point. Visitors planning a Rocky Mountain National Park trip should match their hiking date to the two closure windows and check that their entry reservation includes Bear Lake Road.

At a Glance
  • First closure: September 28 through October 1, 2026.
  • Weekend reopening: October 2 through October 4.
  • Second closure: October 5 through October 8.
  • Alternative: Use Bear Lake Trailhead for Alberta Falls, Mills Lake and Loch Vale.
  • Scope: Glacier Gorge parking and trailhead close to all uses, including shuttle access.

Two Work Periods, With a Weekend Between Them

The National Park Service closure notice divides the project into two Monday through Thursday periods. The area is scheduled to reopen for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 2 to 4, before the second closure begins October 5; it is not a single uninterrupted closure stretching across both weekends.

Crews will repair erosion around the trailhead kiosk and the transition from the plaza to the Glacier Gorge Trail, stabilizing the trail and nearby infrastructure. This is a planned project at the access point, not an announcement that all three lake and waterfall destinations are closing or that the entire Bear Lake Road corridor will shut.

Bear Lake Becomes the Required Starting Point

For hikers keeping Alberta Falls, Mills Lake or Loch Vale on the itinerary during the work dates, the park names Bear Lake Trailhead as the alternative. Start the route plan from there rather than simply transferring an old Glacier Gorge itinerary, because the starting point, trail connections and return route need to match where the group actually enters.

The Denver Gazette’s September 9 report also highlights the Bear Lake alternative and warns that the popular trailhead can be crowded. The official notice does not promise extra parking spaces, a reserved shuttle seat or a replacement temporary stop at Glacier Gorge, so those should not be assumed when planning an arrival.

That makes the choice more specific than simply arriving at the same lot a little earlier. A visitor whose priority is one of those hikes can plan around Bear Lake access, while someone with flexible dates can consider the announced October 2 to 4 reopening or choose an itinerary elsewhere in the park during the work periods.

The Bear Lake Reservation Is a Separate Check

The park’s 2026 timed entry rules distinguish ordinary Timed Entry from Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road. The ordinary option excludes the Bear Lake Road corridor, so a reservation valid elsewhere in Rocky Mountain does not by itself provide the corridor access needed for the alternative trailhead during controlled hours.

Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road is required from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through October 18, covering both announced Glacier Gorge work periods. By comparison, ordinary park timed entry operates from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through October 12, a different daily window and ending date that should not be substituted for the Bear Lake rules.

Reservations provide a designated two hour arrival window, and the park says holders must enter the Bear Lake Road corridor within it. The processing charge is $2 through Recreation.gov; reservations are not sold at park entrance stations or visitor centers, and additional inventory is released at 7 p.m. Mountain time the evening before a visit.

A Permit Does Not Override the Work Closure

Securing the correct corridor reservation solves the entry requirement, not the Glacier Gorge closure itself. Even a visitor with a valid permit must use the alternative trailhead on the listed work dates, and neither a permit nor the temporary weekend reopening guarantees an available parking space at the preferred arrival time.

Check the dated park notice again before departure, particularly for an October trip that depends on the gap between work periods. The published schedule identifies October 8 as the last day of the second closure window, but visitors should use any later park update for changed conditions rather than treat a construction schedule as an unconditional guarantee.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Visit September 28 to October 1 Do not use Glacier Gorge parking or trailhead; plan the named hikes from Bear Lake.
Visit October 2 to 4 The notice schedules a reopening, but check for updates and normal entry requirements.
Visit October 5 to 8 The second full closure applies, including shuttle access.
Have ordinary Timed Entry only Check Bear Lake Road eligibility separately before relying on the alternate trailhead.
Planning Impact

Before September 28: Update saved hiking directions to reflect the correct starting point and match any required reservation to Bear Lake Road.

October 2 to 4: The planned reopening creates a gap between work periods, not an exemption from normal park access rules.
