Ferrol Cruise Port expects its new passenger terminal to be operational in spring 2027. Global Ports Holding and the Ferrol-San Cibrao Port Authority presented the project at Seatrade Cruise Med 2026 in Las Palmas, with the port president saying he expects the building ready in spring and construction of the first phase due this year.
If you are booking a 2027 Spain or Atlantic itinerary, the decision is whether Ferrol becomes a realistic port of call once a dedicated terminal exists, and how that sits next to Galicia’s established stops. A Coruna remains the nearby cruise day in the same region; our La Coruna cruise port guide is the planning page to open beside a Ferrol call.
- Opens: Spring 2027, in time for the 2027 cruise season, according to Global Ports Holding and the port authority.
- Where: Outer quay at the Port of Ferrol, Galicia, Spain, about 1 kilometer from the city center.
- Size: 960 square meters in two phases, with a 480-square-meter first building.
- Operator: Global Ports Holding, on a 30-year concession awarded by the Ferrol-San Cibrao Port Authority.
- Today: Ferrol is not listed as a turnaround port. The published airport transfer is about 50 kilometers.
Spring 2027 Terminal on the Outer Quay
The joint presentation at Seatrade Cruise Med 2026 is the dated public commitment. José Antonio Álvarez Vidal, president of the Ferrol-San Cibrao Port Authority, called the alliance with Global Ports Holding a strategic step for a port he described as still modest in cruise passenger traffic. He said the new Ferrol Cruise Port terminal will transform the port and boost passenger traffic, and that he expects the improvement ready in spring.
Francesc Grau, Global Ports Holding’s West Med regional director, said Ferrol is an important addition to the company’s West Mediterranean and Atlantic portfolio and a milestone in its Spain expansion. The company operates 35 ports worldwide and says it serves more than 22 million passengers. Ferrol joins that network under a 30-year concession to build and operate the cruise terminal.
Puente de Mando reported the same spring 2027 service date after the Seatrade presentation, naming the terminal Ferrol Cruise Port and placing it on the outer dock. That independent write-up matches the operator’s own newsroom on the season, the two-phase plan, and the concession length.
Two Phases and a 30-Year Concession
Global Ports Holding says the project occupies 960 square meters at the outer quay and will be built in two phases. Phase one is a 480-square-meter terminal, with construction expected to begin this year. Operations are expected during the 2027 cruise season. The second phase is reserved for later, once the wharf is set up to handle larger ships more fully.
That phasing matters for itinerary planners. A 480-square-meter first building is a passenger handling hall, not a mega-terminal. It is meant to give cruise lines, agents, and passengers a dedicated check-in, baggage, and guidance space instead of an improvised call. Mobile facilities are part of the longer concession plan so the port can handle ships berthed farther from the main building and, in time, more than one call at once.
The current Global Ports Holding port card still lists Ferrol as a port of call rather than a turnaround hub, with city center about 1 kilometer away and the airport about 50 kilometers away. Published maximum ship dimensions on that card are 140 meters in length and 12.50 meters draught, with five berths and 1,586 meters of berthing line. Treat those figures as the live published limits until the outer-quay terminal and later wharf work change them. Do not assume every 2027 megaship can already book Ferrol.
Passenger Access From the New Building
The operator’s pitch is walking-distance access. Ferrol Cruise Port says guests can disembark within walking distance of the city’s main cultural and commercial districts. That is the traveler difference a dedicated terminal is supposed to lock in: a sheltered Atlantic harbor, a short walk into town, and a starting point for excursions to Santiago de Compostela, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Álvarez Vidal tied the terminal to Abrir Ferrol al Mar, the port-city project that is meant to open the historic naval arsenal to the public by taking down a wall that now hides it. That is a destination change for anyone who goes ashore, not only a gangway change. The castle of San Felipe still guards the narrow estuary, and the Magdalena district remains the modernist in-town walk. The terminal does not invent those sights. It is supposed to make the call easier to operate so more ships actually use them.
Vigo is the other Galicia cruise stop Deep Arrival already maps for shore time. If a 2027 itinerary offers both Vigo and a new Ferrol call, compare walking distance and transfer time rather than treating them as duplicates. Our Vigo cruise port guide is the southern Galicia pair. Spain-wide routing still starts from the Spain first-trip regions page when you are choosing which coast to book.
How 2027 Itineraries Should Treat Ferrol
Spring 2027 is a season, not a Monday. Cruise lines typically lock Spain and Atlantic deployment a year or more ahead. The useful booking move now is to watch 2027 Galicia and northern Spain itineraries for a Ferrol call once the first building is in the construction window, and to treat any 2026 call as the current, smaller-scale operation without that terminal.
Do not convert a terminal announcement into a named ship’s schedule. Global Ports Holding and the port authority have not published a 2027 call list in the Seatrade briefing. Passenger volume targets from earlier concession notices are planning numbers, not a guarantee that a specific line will add the port. If a line does add Ferrol, the walking-distance claim and the 50-kilometer airport transfer are the two facts that change a day ashore or a fly-in.
For 2028 Europe deployment already on the market, northern Spain remains a mix of established ports. Our Holland America 2028 Europe port-call roundup is a chronology check for Spain and Atlantic capacity, not a Ferrol confirmation. Use it to see how crowded the region already is, then come back to the spring 2027 Ferrol date as the new infrastructure fact.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Are booking a 2027 Spain or Atlantic cruise | Watch itineraries for a Ferrol call after the spring 2027 terminal date. Do not assume the port is a turnaround hub. |
| Already hold a 2026 Ferrol call | Expect today’s smaller-scale operation. The new building is aimed at the 2027 season, not this winter. |
| Can choose Ferrol or A Coruna | Treat them as neighboring Galicia days. A Coruna is the established stop. Ferrol is the new terminal story. |
| Need fly-in logistics | Plan on about 50 kilometers to the airport and about 1 kilometer to the city center, per the operator card. |
This year is the construction start window for the 480-square-meter first terminal on the outer quay, according to Global Ports Holding.
Spring 2027 is the published opening season. Treat it as the first moment a dedicated Ferrol Cruise Port building is supposed to handle passengers.
The 2027 cruise season is the operations target. Use that season, not a specific day, when comparing itineraries, and wait for a line to name the call.
When does the new Ferrol cruise terminal open?
Spring 2027, for the 2027 cruise season, according to Global Ports Holding and the Ferrol-San Cibrao Port Authority after their Seatrade Cruise Med 2026 presentation.
Who is building Ferrol Cruise Port?
Global Ports Holding, under a 30-year concession from the Ferrol-San Cibrao Port Authority. The first phase is a 480-square-meter terminal on a 960-square-meter outer-quay site.
Will Ferrol be a turnaround port in 2027?
The operator’s current port card lists Ferrol as not a turnaround port. The new terminal is described as a passenger building for calls, not as a homeport switch.
How far is Ferrol cruise port from town and the airport?
About 1 kilometer to the city center and about 50 kilometers to the airport, according to Global Ports Holding’s Ferrol port facts.
Is Ferrol the same stop as A Coruna or Vigo?
No. Ferrol is its own Galician port. A Coruna and Vigo are the established neighboring cruise days. Compare walking distance and transfers rather than treating them as one call.
Can every large cruise ship call Ferrol in 2027?
Not automatically. The live published berth card still lists a 140-meter length limit. The new terminal is the first phase. Wait for the operator and cruise lines to publish updated ship limits.
