Etihad Airways said on 7 September 2026 that it will fly to Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast from 4 October 2026. The year-round service lands at Red Sea International Airport, which the airline described as just over three hours from Abu Dhabi, in a news post on Etihad’s site.
The traveler decision is whether to book that new Abu Dhabi gateway for a fall or winter stay, or keep using the Gulf links that already serve the same airport. Cabin product on connecting Etihad itineraries is covered in our Etihad Airways 787 Business Class 2026 Guide.
- Start date: 4 October 2026, according to Etihad’s 7 September news post.
- Route: Abu Dhabi to Red Sea International Airport (RSI), year-round.
- Block time: just over three hours, as described by the airline.
- Airport operator: daa International, 90 kilometres south of Al Wajh.
- Still unpublished: days of week, aircraft type, and fares were not in the public summary.
Year-Round Service Starts 4 October 2026
Etihad’s 7 September news post framed the launch as a holiday booking, not a seasonal trial. The airline said the service to Red Sea International Airport will run year-round and put a new coastal destination on its map from 4 October 2026. The post’s own headline told readers to book October by the sea, which is an invitation to treat 4 October as a live booking date rather than a rumor.
That is a different planning window from a winter-only add. A year-round tag means October is the first date, not the only season, unless Etihad later trims the file. The public summary did not list flight numbers, weekday pattern, or the aircraft assigned to the hop.
Treat those blanks as a booking gate, not as a reason to ignore the date. Check etihad.com for the live timetable before you pay, then match the arrival to a resort transfer. The same network expansion already includes other dated adds, including Etihad’s Abu Dhabi Gothenburg flights from 17 December.
Red Sea International Already Has Gulf Connections
RSI is not an empty field. A 5 May 2026 airport press release on ZAWYA said Red Sea International Airport is operated by daa International and sits ninety kilometres south of Al Wajh, with a two million passenger design capacity. That statement also said RSI sits within eight hours’ flying time of 85 percent of the world’s population, which is why a year-round Abu Dhabi link changes the connecting map.
That same statement listed extra Eid al-Adha flights from 21 to 31 May 2026 on Saudia from Riyadh and Jeddah, flydubai from Dubai, and Qatar Airways from Doha. Those carriers were already moving guests into The Red Sea destination before Etihad named 4 October.
If you can reach Dubai or Doha more cheaply than Abu Dhabi, those existing links still matter. Etihad’s new service is an additional gateway, not a replacement for Saudia, flydubai, or Qatar Airways on this airport.
Abu Dhabi Becomes a Direct Holiday Gateway
The useful change for Etihad’s customers is a nonstop from the airline’s home hub. Guests already on Etihad metal through Zayed International Airport will not need a second Gulf carrier to reach RSI after 4 October 2026, provided the new flights are open in the booking path they use.
That is why the announcement belongs next to a product comparison, not only a map pin. If you are choosing between two UAE hubs, our Emirates vs Etihad guide is the page that sorts cabin and network differences before you lock a Red Sea week.
Abu Dhabi also works as a one-stop from cities Etihad already serves in Europe, India, and East Asia. The airline did not publish connecting banks or minimum connection times for RSI in the 7 September summary, so build the itinerary on the live availability calendar rather than assuming a same-day beach arrival.
The Destination Sits Between Umluj and Al Wajh
The Red Sea destination is a tourism project on Saudi Arabia’s west coast in Tabuk Province, developed by Public Investment Fund-owned Red Sea Global as part of Vision 2030. Wikipedia’s current project page places it between Umluj and Al Wajh across about 28,000 square kilometres, with more than 90 offshore islands and 200 kilometres of coastline.
The same page says the plan is for 50 hotels and 8,000 rooms across 22 islands and six inland sites. Openings already named there include Six Senses Southern Dunes, Shebara Resort, Desert Rock Resort, St. Regis Red Sea Resort, and Nujuma, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. RSI is the airport gateway for that cluster, not a city-break terminal in Jeddah.
Build the stay around a named resort and a transfer, not around a walkable downtown. The airport press note says RSI was designed by Foster and Partners with Jacobs and is meant as the primary domestic and international gateway for the destination. Confirm which island or inland site you are actually booked into before you choose an arrival time.
Confirm the Timetable Before You Pay
Etihad’s public summary confirmed the start date, the airport, the year-round tag, and a block time of just over three hours. It did not confirm how many days a week the route will run, which cabin the aircraft will carry, or from which Abu Dhabi terminal the flight will leave.
Those missing rows change the trip. A three-day-weekly file is a different hotel-night puzzle from a daily one. A narrowbody with First, Business, and Economy is a different fare mix from a two-cabin A320. Wait for the booking engine to show a specific flight, then buy.
Also confirm visa rules on the official Saudi channels that apply to your passport, and confirm whether your resort includes the RSI transfer. The airport is a purpose-built gateway, not a substitute for Jeddah or NEOM, and a wrong airport assumption is expensive on this coast.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Can reach Abu Dhabi on Etihad | Look up AUH to RSI from 4 October 2026 on etihad.com and buy only after a flight number appears. |
| Are already priced into Dubai or Doha | Keep flydubai or Qatar Airways as the RSI access unless the Etihad total trip is cheaper or simpler. |
| Need Riyadh or Jeddah | Use Saudia into RSI, which the airport operator listed as the domestic workhorse in May 2026. |
| Need days of week or aircraft today | Do not guess. Etihad’s 7 September summary omitted the timetable. Recheck the booking path. |
7 September 2026 is the announcement. Etihad posted the year-round RSI service and the 4 October start. Use that date to start comparing Abu Dhabi against Dubai and Doha.
4 October 2026 is the first flight window. Do not assume daily service or a published cabin until the live booking file shows it.
Resort transfer is the third gate. RSI sits 90 kilometres south of Al Wajh. Confirm the island or inland site and the included transfer before you pick an arrival.
