Caltrans has one-way traffic control scheduled this week on almost every road an Eastern Sierra fall colour trip uses, from Tioga Pass and the June Lake Loop to Bishop Creek and Sonora Junction.
Most of the individual delays are five to ten minutes. Two are twenty, and one stretch of road in Bishop is closed outright, which is the one to plan around.
The work runs Monday 21 to Friday 25 September across Inyo and Mono counties, the week a lot of people head up US 395 for the aspens and a few days around Mammoth Lakes.
- Tioga Pass: one-way control Tioga Lake to Yosemite’s east gate, Monday and Tuesday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- June Lake Loop: work on Wednesday and Friday, with up to 20 minute delays on Wednesday.
- Bishop: West Line Street closed from Fowler Street to US 395 around the clock on weekdays.
- Bishop Creek: one-way control near Aspendell, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- North of Walker: US 395 chip seal to the Nevada line with up to 20 minute delays.
Bishop’s West Line Street Is the One That Is Shut
Everything else on this list is a short wait. This one is a closure.
State Route 168, West Line Street, is fully closed from Fowler Street to US 395 while the City of Bishop replaces its water main. The work runs 24 hours a day Monday through Friday, and detours are available.
That stretch is the start of the road from US 395 up to Bishop Creek, Aspendell, and the North and South Lake areas that draw most of the fall colour traffic out of Bishop.
On top of that, Caltrans’ Bishop pavement project has intermittent lane and intersection closures on West Line Street from US 395 to Pioneer Lane, which began on Sunday 20 September, with the speed limit cut to 25 mph between Jay Street and Wye Road, weekdays 6.30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Follow the posted detour rather than a phone map, which will keep trying to send you down the closed block.
Bishop Creek and Aspendell Have One-Way Control
Once past town, the canyon road itself has work too.
Utility crews are replacing poles on State Route 168 near South Lake Road east of Aspendell, and near West Bishop Creek Road, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Traffic is one-way under control, with delays of about five minutes.
Five minutes is small on its own. Stacked on the West Line Street detour on a weekday, it is the difference between reaching the lakes in the morning light and reaching them at midday.
A weekend drive up the canyon avoids both the utility work and the town closure’s weekday schedule.
Tioga Pass Has Two Days of Work
The eastern approach to Yosemite gets two days of electrical work this week.
On State Route 120 from Tioga Lake to the eastern entrance of Yosemite National Park, crews are working Monday and Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. under one-way traffic control, with delays of about ten minutes.
That is the high section of the pass just outside the park, and it stacks with work inside the park boundary. The park’s own conditions page lists delays in the Tuolumne Meadows area and weekday daytime delays between Olmsted Point and Tioga Pass.
For a crossing from the Eastern Sierra into Yosemite on Monday or Tuesday, budget for both. Wednesday onward, the Caltrans section is clear.
The June Lake Loop Has the Longest Waits
State Route 158, the June Lake Loop, has three separate pieces of work this week, and one carries the longest delay on the whole list.
From US 395 to Lyle Terrace Road, utility crews continue pole replacement on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with intermittent traffic breaks and delays of up to 20 minutes.
Also on Wednesday, crews cross wire over the road between the winter closure gate and Silver Lake Campground, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with one-way control and ten minute delays.
On Friday, electrical work runs on the northern loop from the winter closure gate to the northern junction with US 395, again with one-way control and ten minute delays.
If the loop is on the plan, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday are the clean days.
North Toward Bridgeport and Walker
The northern end of the corridor has a cluster of short delays and one long one.
On US 395, utility crews replace poles from Virginia Lakes Road to State Route 270, the Bodie road, on Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with five minute delays. On State Route 167 from US 395 to Conway Ranch near Mono City, electrical work runs Thursday and Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with ten minute delays.
In Bridgeport, the welcome banner comes down on Tuesday from 6 to 10 a.m. near Sinclair Street, and poles are replaced between Kirkwood and Emigrant streets on Friday, both with five minute delays. State Route 182 north of town has ongoing one-way control and five minute delays on weekdays.
At Sonora Junction, State Route 108 from Sonora Bridge Campground to US 395 has electrical work Tuesday and Wednesday, with ten minute delays.
The long one is the chip seal on US 395 from Hackney Drive near Walker to the Nevada state line, Tuesday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday until 3 p.m., with delays of up to 20 minutes. That is the approach from Carson City and Reno.
South of Bishop, US 395 Is Still Narrowed
Drivers coming up from Los Angeles meet the ongoing projects first.
At Manzanar, all traffic is on the new southbound lanes of US 395 between Fort Independence and the south end of Independence, with the speed limit at 55 mph and 25 mph within Independence, weekdays 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
In Lone Pine, the outside lane and shoulders stay closed at two locations for sidewalk and drainage work, weekdays 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. From Little Lake to Cinder Road south of Coso Junction, outside lanes close intermittently for striping, Monday to Thursday.
None of those is long on its own, but a Los Angeles to Mammoth drive passes all three before it reaches Bishop and the West Line Street detour. Deep Arrival covered the delays on Yosemite’s western roads through December, which are the other half of a loop trip.
How to Check the Day Before You Drive
Caltrans is explicit that the schedule can move with weather, equipment and incidents, so the list is a plan rather than a promise.
The district’s full weekly advisory for 21 to 25 September is published in the Eastern Sierra press, with every location and time window.
For live conditions on the morning, Caltrans points drivers to QuickMap, which shows current lane closures and incidents on US 395 and the side routes.
The single most useful adjustment is timing. Almost all of this week’s work is weekday daytime, so a Saturday or Sunday drive through the Eastern Sierra meets very little of it.
| If you are driving… | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Into Bishop Creek from US 395 on a weekday | West Line Street closed Fowler Street to US 395. Follow the detour, then one-way control near Aspendell. |
| Over Tioga Pass on Monday or Tuesday | One-way control Tioga Lake to Yosemite’s east gate, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., about 10 minutes. |
| The June Lake Loop on Wednesday | Up to 20 minute delays near Lyle Terrace Road, plus one-way control near Silver Lake. |
| US 395 north of Walker, Tuesday to Friday | Chip seal to the Nevada line with up to 20 minute delays. |
| Any of these on Saturday or Sunday | Most of this week’s work is weekday only. The Bishop water main closure is scheduled Monday to Friday. |
One real closure. West Line Street in Bishop, the road toward Bishop Creek, is shut from Fowler Street to US 395 on weekdays.
Two 20 minute waits. The June Lake Loop on Wednesday and US 395 north of Walker from Tuesday.
Weekends are clear. Nearly all of the work is scheduled Monday to Friday in daylight.
