DVC Locks Walking Reservations Until Checkout Hits 11 Months

Disney Vacation Club posted a new modification rule on its official Disney Stays page: members may change travel dates or room types on a confirmed Disney Vacation Club resort reservation only when the original check-out date is within 11 months of the request. The same page says booking-system updates to match Home Resort Rules and Regulations are coming soon, while guest-information edits and cancellations remain available under the existing Vacation Point windows.

That lock is aimed at reservation walking, the tactic of booking a seven-night stay at the 11-month home-resort opening and then sliding it night by night into a later, scarcer window. Members targeting high-demand villas at places such as Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort should treat the posted language as live planning guidance now, even before the website fully refuses those date shifts.

At a Glance
  • Rule now posted: Date and room-type changes are allowed only when the original check-out is inside 11 months.
  • Still open: Guest-name edits and cancellations follow the usual Vacation Point return and holding-account windows.
  • Who it hits: Disney Vacation Club resort bookings at Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resort, and other DVC villas.
  • System status: Disney says the booking-system update is coming soon; the written rule is already on the Disney Stays page.
  • Traveler move: Book the nights you actually need at the 11-month mark instead of parking a placeholder week.

Disney Locks Date Changes Until Checkout Is Inside 11 Months

The Disney Stays modification page now states, in the Disney Vacation Club Resorts table, that modifications to travel dates and room types on a confirmed reservation can only be made when the original check-out date is within 11 months of the modification request. You can still update guest information or cancel the reservation. Disney Tourist Blog reports that DVCMember.com currently carries a News and Alerts item labeled Upcoming Updates to Reservation Modifications that points to this same page.

Disney writes that updates to the booking system will be coming soon so the tools match Home Resort Rules and Regulations. That is confirmed policy text, not yet a screenshot of a blocked Modify button. Members should plan as if a date or room-type change will be refused until the original check-out falls inside 11 months, and they should not count on a last-minute walk succeeding after the system catch-up lands.

Reservation Walking Used the Seven Night Home Resort Window

Home-resort DVC bookings open 11 months before check-in, and the online window lets a member lock up to seven consecutive nights. Because the hold is measured from check-in, a seven-night stay reaches a check-out date that other members cannot yet book for a shorter trip. Walking exploited that gap. A member would reserve a week that started earlier than the real vacation, then drop the first night and add a night on the back until the block sat on the true holiday dates.

The new rule closes that path by tying date and room-type changes to the original check-out, not the check-in. Once the first seven-night hold is confirmed, you cannot keep rolling the back end forward until that original check-out itself is inside 11 months. By then, every other home-resort member can book those same nights without a placeholder. Guest-list edits and cancellations remain listed as separate actions and do not restore the old loophole.

Scarce Studios and Flagship Villas Lose the Early Hold

Walking paid off where inventory is thin. Disney Tourist Blog names the Grand Californian at Disneyland Resort, Crescent Lake resorts during EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival, value studios, and Kilimanjaro Club villas at Animal Kingdom Lodge as the categories that benefited most. Those rooms vanish minutes after the 11-month window opens, which is why a parked seven-night hold was so valuable to commercial renters and to owners who wanted a specific view.

Crescent Lake is the BoardWalk, Yacht Club, and Beach Club cluster, including Disney’s BoardWalk Inn and the BoardWalk Villas next door. A member who used to walk a September studio into an October festival week will now have to book that October week when it actually opens. Newer DVC lodging such as Disney’s Fort Wilderness Cabins follows the same Disney Vacation Club Resorts table, as do Villas at Disneyland Hotel and the rest of the California DVC stack.

Book the Real Dates, Then Watch the System Update

On the 11-month morning, book the nights you intend to occupy, at the resort and room type you can actually use. Do not open a decoy week that you plan to walk later. If your real trip is shorter than seven nights, book that shorter stay instead of stretching it as a placeholder. If the preferred view is gone, take the available category or join a waitlist rather than parking a different week and hoping to morph it.

If you already hold a walked reservation whose original check-out sits more than 11 months out, treat date and room-type changes as frozen until that check-out enters the window. You can still correct guest names. A cancel 31 or more days before check-in returns Vacation Points to the stay’s Use Year; inside 30 days those points land in a Holding Account and expire at the end of that Use Year if unused.

On the check-in date, unused points are forfeited. Disney lists Member Services at (800) 800-9800 or (407) 566-3800 for cases the website will not complete.

Commercial Use Penalties Already Sit Beside the New Rule

Disney Tourist Blog ties the lock to last summer’s personal-use attestation at booking and to the Commercial Use Policy DVC published for all associations on March 31, 2026. That policy lists enforcement tools that already include canceling future reservations, restricting online booking, and blocking date-based modifications for up to 24 months. The new row does not, by itself, seize points. It removes the extra days of exclusive hold that walking used to buy.

Point charts still govern how expensive those rooms are. Deep Arrival’s earlier note on Disney Vacation Club’s 2027 point-chart reallocation remains the place to check whether a given resort got cheaper or dearer next year. The walking lock does not rewrite those charts. It only changes whether you can slide a hold onto the expensive week after someone else already lost the opening-morning scramble.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Are about to book at the 11-month open Reserve the real check-in and length. Do not park a decoy seven-night stay to walk later.
Already walked a stay whose original check-out is beyond 11 months Expect date and room-type changes to wait until that original check-out is inside 11 months. Guest edits and cancels still follow the point clocks.
Need a change and the original check-out is already inside 11 months Modify online for dates or room type, then confirm the new point total against the 31-day and 30-day return rules.
Are inside 30 days of check-in and must drop nights Unused Vacation Points go to a Holding Account and expire at the end of that Use Year if you do not reuse them.
Planning Impact

The posted 11-month checkout lock is the booking gate now. On the morning your real check-in opens, reserve the nights you will occupy. Do not park a decoy seven-night stay to walk later.

The original check-out date is the modification gate. If that date is still more than 11 months away, expect date and room-type changes to wait. Guest-name edits and cancellations still follow the Vacation Point clocks.

Disney’s booking-system update is the enforcement gate. Treat a successful click that contradicts the written rule as temporary. Keep confirmations, and call Member Services if the website will not complete a change that the table still allows.

Frequently Asked

Did Disney Vacation Club ban reservation walking?

Disney has not used the word ban. It posted a rule that date and room-type changes are allowed only when the original check-out is within 11 months, which removes the night-by-night walk that used the seven-night home-resort window.

Can DVC members still change guest names on a reservation?

Yes. The Disney Stays table still allows guest-information updates and still allows cancellations. The new lock applies to travel dates and room types, not to the names on the reservation.

When will the DVC website actually block a walked date change?

Disney says booking-system updates are coming soon. The written rule is already on the official modification page, so members should plan as if those date shifts will be refused even if a current click still appears to work.

Does the 11-month lock apply to cash Disney hotel rooms?

The new row sits in the Disney Vacation Club Resorts section, which covers Vacation Point bookings at DVC villas. Cash Walt Disney World and Disneyland hotel reservations keep their own cancellation tables on the same page.
