Dulles Center Runway Closed Through November 22

Washington Dulles International Airport is operating without its center north-south runway while crews complete planned maintenance and infrastructure work. WTOP reported that the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority said the closure began September 21, 2026, and is expected to continue through at least November, with arrivals and departures shifted onto the airport’s other two north-south runways.

The airport remains open. The traveler decision is whether to pad connection time, avoid tight same-day international-to-domestic turns, and watch airline status for ground delay programs while one of three parallel runways is out. Start with the Deep Arrival airlines hub for carrier pages, then check your specific Dulles itinerary against the current FAA end date rather than assuming a same-week reopen.

At a Glance
  • What closed: Dulles center runway, listed by the FAA as Runway 01C/19C, one of three north-south runways.
  • Start: September 21, 2026, according to MWAA as reported by WTOP.
  • Current FAA end: November 22, 2026, 11:59 p.m. UTC, on the September 28 ATCSCC operations plan.
  • Operations: Flights keep using the remaining two north-south runways, with north or south flow set by wind.
  • Who this is for: Passengers connecting at Dulles, Loudoun-area residents tracking noise, and anyone booking October or November IAD itineraries.

Dulles Center Runway Closed From September 21

Loudoun County posted on September 25 that planned maintenance and infrastructure improvements require closing the center runway, with flights from that runway taking off and landing on the other two north-south strips. The county cited MWAA and said the work is anticipated to last at least through November 2026. That is an official local notice quoting the airport operator, not a rumor about a surprise shutdown.

MWAA told WTOP the work began September 21. Treat that date as the start of the current operating pattern. If you flew Dulles in mid-September without delay, that week is not the template for October. The airport has not published a passenger terminal closure. Ticketing, security, AeroTrain, and gate operations continue while the airfield uses two north-south runways instead of three.

Two Remaining North-South Runways Carry the Traffic

Dulles normally splits arrivals and departures across three parallel north-south runways. With the center strip closed, the same traffic uses the two outer runways. Loudoun County and WJLA both relayed MWAA’s statement that the adjusted pattern stays on FAA-approved flight paths. Wind still decides north flow versus south flow, so the community that hears more aircraft can change during the day even though the closed runway does not move.

For passengers, the useful translation is capacity, not a map of backyard noise. Fewer available runways can mean longer taxi times, more holding, or a ground delay program on a busy weather day. None of the current MWAA or county notices lists a standing ground stop. Check FAA NAS Status on the day you fly instead of assuming every Dulles departure will be late.

November 22 Is the FAA Listed End Date

County and MWAA language says “at least through November.” The FAA’s September 28 ATCSCC operations plan is more specific: IAD Runway 01C/19C closed until November 22, 2026, at 2359Z. The FAA’s Q2 2026 airport construction impact report had already flagged a 63-day Runway 1C closure in the September to November window as part of taxiway W and W3 work and taxiway Y and Y9 reconstruction.

Use November 22 as the current listed end, and treat “at least November” as a warning that the date can slip. A construction SIR can extend without a new consumer press release. If you are booking a connection in late November, verify the runway status the week before travel rather than relying on this article’s original FAA line. Thanksgiving week traffic at Dulles is a poor week to discover an extension the night before you fly, so screenshot the current NAS Status and your airline’s delay page before you leave home.

Connection Times and Ground Delay Risk

International-to-domestic connections at Dulles already include immigration, baggage, and a possible AeroTrain ride. A two-runway airfield does not automatically cancel those flights, but it can eat the buffer you counted on. Build more than the airline’s minimum connection, especially in the afternoon bank and on days with low ceilings or wind shifts that force a flow change. Same-day outbound international trips should leave more time at the curb as well, because a late inbound on the remaining runways can miss a long-haul departure. If you are arriving on a regional jet and leaving on a widebody, treat the two remaining runways as a reason to book the earlier inbound, not a reason to skip Dulles entirely.

Do not change a ticket solely because the center runway is closed. Do change your plan if your itinerary is already inside a 45-minute connection, a last-flight-of-the-night international departure, or a day when NAS Status shows a Dulles ground delay program. Airlines, not the county noise office, control rebooking. MWAA’s noise line at 703-417-1204 is for residents, not for gate assignments.

This Closure Is Separate From Concourse E Work

Dulles also has a passenger-side capital program, including the Concourse E opening plan Deep Arrival already covered in the October Concourse E report. That is a gate and terminal story. This runway closure is an airfield constraint. Mixing the two will send you to the wrong MWAA page and the wrong date. Ask whether your airline is using existing concourses as usual, then separately pad for airfield delay.

FAA construction papers describe new taxiways W and W3 and reconstruction of taxiways Y and Y9 alongside the Runway 1C closure. Those taxiway phases can create extra tows and longer taxi routes even after the center runway reopens. Until MWAA or the FAA posts a new end date, assume the two remaining north-south runways are the operating picture through the November 22 listing.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Have a tight Dulles connection in October Add buffer beyond the airline minimum and avoid last-flight international outbound connections.
Are booking late November travel Treat November 22 as the current FAA end, then recheck NAS Status and airline notices the week before you fly.
Live near the airport and want noise information Call MWAA’s Noise Information Office at 703-417-1204; that office does not rebook flights.
See a ground delay program on NAS Status Follow the airline app for a new wheels-up time; the runway project is the capacity backdrop, not a terminal shutdown.
Planning Impact

September 21, 2026, is the MWAA start date. The center runway has already been closed for more than a week.

November 22, 2026, is the FAA listed end on the September 28 operations plan. County notices still say at least through November, so plan as if the constraint lasts the full listed window.

Day-of-travel NAS Status is the delay gate. A two-runway airfield can be quiet on a clear morning and stacked on a wind-shift afternoon.

Frequently Asked

Is Dulles Airport closed in October 2026?

No. MWAA and Loudoun County describe a center-runway closure. Terminals, security, and scheduled flights continue on the remaining runways.

Which Dulles runway is closed?

The center north-south runway, listed by the FAA as Runway 01C/19C. The other two north-south runways remain in use.

When did the Dulles runway closure start?

MWAA told WTOP the work began September 21, 2026. Loudoun County posted the public notice on September 25.

When does the Dulles center runway reopen?

The FAA’s September 28 operations plan lists the closure through November 22, 2026, 2359Z. MWAA language is at least through November.

Will my Dulles flight be canceled?

The notices do not announce a schedule purge. Watch your airline and FAA NAS Status for delay programs on the day you fly.

Is this the same project as Dulles Concourse E?

No. Concourse E is a passenger-gate project. This story is the airfield closure of Runway 01C/19C.
