Click and Travel Cuts Dubai Airport Waits to Seconds

The General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs Dubai (GDRFA Dubai) launched Click and Travel on September 7, 2026, a mobile passport-control service that lets officers complete entry and departure checks with handheld devices inside Dubai airport terminals. Gulf News reported that a transaction takes about 12 to 15 seconds and that 31,373 checks ran in the May to August 31, 2026 pilot.

Travelers connecting through Dubai International Airport (DXB) should not expect every queue to vanish. Officers deploy the devices when lines build, with priority for families, children, and people of determination, and arriving visitors on tourist visas are still outside the first phase. If you are pairing the airport stop with a city stay, start with Deep Arrival’s guide to where to stay in Dubai so lodging sits on the right side of town for your terminal and transfer time.

At a Glance
  • Launch: September 7, 2026, after pilots from October 2025 and May to August 2026.
  • Speed: About 12 to 15 seconds per transaction, according to GDRFA Dubai.
  • Departures: Available to UAE citizens, residents, and visitors.
  • Arrivals: First phase covers Emiratis and UAE residents only.
  • Not a replacement: Complements smart gates and the Red Carpet biometric corridor.

Officers Bring Passport Control to Passengers

Click and Travel reverses the usual airport geometry. Instead of sending every traveler to a fixed immigration counter, passport officers carry connected mobile devices to the passenger’s location in the terminal and finish the entry or departure record there. The National reported that the handheld units use facial and iris biometrics and link to GDRFA systems for identity checks without a conventional counter stop.

GDRFA Director General Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri said the change is about moving the service to the traveler rather than asking the traveler to hunt for a booth. Major General Talal Al Shanqiti, assistant director general for airports, said teams can use the devices when queues are long and that the tool is a backup for smart gates and the Red Carpet tunnel, not a substitute. Gulf News quoted him describing the shift as bringing counter services to the passenger.

The service is switched on when operations need extra capacity: peak banks, irregular arrivals, or an emergency that jams a hall. It is not a new app travelers download, and it is not a promise that every DXB passenger will skip the desk. Officers still decide when and where to walk the device onto the floor.

Who Qualifies on Arrival Versus Departure

Eligibility is the part that changes a booking. For departing passengers, Gulf News and The National both report that Click and Travel is open to UAE citizens, residents, and visitors. If you are leaving Dubai, including as a tourist, you can be processed this way when officers are working that bank.

Arrival is narrower. The first phase covers Emiratis and UAE residents only, with GDRFA saying it expects to extend the service to other groups, including visitors on tourist visas, subject to approved plans. Until that expansion is confirmed, a visitor landing at DXB should still plan for smart gates or a staffed passport desk. Official service pages remain on the GDRFA Dubai site.

Families, children, and people of determination get priority when the mobile team is deployed. That does not create a separate reservation window. It is an on-the-floor queue-management rule, so a parent with a stroller should still allow normal immigration time and treat a mobile officer as a possible shortcut, not a guaranteed lane.

Smart Gates and Red Carpet Stay in Place

Dubai already runs two faster immigration products that Click and Travel does not retire. Smart gates let eligible travelers clear with an automated scan in seconds. The Red Carpet corridor is an artificial intelligence biometric lane that, The National reported, processed about 750,000 passengers this year and has cleared people in about six to 14 seconds without showing a passport or boarding pass.

The National also reported that about 26 million passengers used Dubai’s airports from January through August, with more than 9.4 million of them using smart gates. Click and Travel sits beside those systems. When smart gates are open and you qualify, use them. When a bank is saturated, the mobile team is the overflow tool. For route context into the emirate, use Deep Arrival’s airlines hub, then treat immigration method as a separate DXB decision.

Do not assume Red Carpet access from a tourist stamp. That corridor has its own eligibility rules. Click and Travel’s arrival phase is currently limited to citizens and residents, so a visitor who does not qualify for Red Carpet should not expect the handheld team to replace the desk on landing.

Pilot Numbers Show the Service Already Ran at Scale

This is not a brand-new experiment dropped onto a live concourse. GDRFA said 31,373 transactions were completed in the May to August 31, 2026 pilot, a volume large enough to test DXB’s peak banks. Khaleej Times reported that an earlier trial began in October 2025 at Terminal 3 and first focused on families, with a second phase from May 2026 spreading across Dubai airport terminals.

Al Marri told Gulf News that those 31,000-plus checks showed the service can operate in a busy airport and that the results will guide further expansion. That is a readiness claim, not a new legal right. The September 7 launch makes the mobile process part of ordinary operations, still under officer control, still limited on arrivals.

Travelers should treat the pilot numbers as evidence the hardware and databases already ran at DXB, not as a forecast of wait times on a specific flight. A 12 to 15 second transaction only helps if an officer is standing in your hall with a free device. If the team is on another concourse, your wait is the old wait.

Dubai Airport Connections Still Need Buffer Time

DXB remains a high-volume transfer point, and Click and Travel does not change minimum connection rules published by airlines. Keep the same buffer you would have used last week, then use the new tool if it appears in your hall. A tight inbound-to-outbound connection is still a bet on immigration flow, baggage, and the walk between terminals.

Arriving visitors should plan as if they will use smart gates or a staffed desk until GDRFA confirms the tourist-visa expansion. Departing visitors can watch for a mobile officer during peak banks, especially with children or reduced mobility in the group. Residents and citizens have the widest access today and can use the service in both directions when it is deployed.

The useful next step is simple. Before you fly, screenshot this eligibility split, keep passports ready, and do not count on skipping the hall. If an officer walks over with a device, the check itself is short. If not, the existing smart-gate and counter system is still the path through Dubai.

Planning Impact

September 7, 2026 is the launch date. Click and Travel is in ordinary operations at Dubai airports from that day, under officer control.

Arriving visitor expansion is the next gate. Tourist-visa passengers should plan for smart gates or a staffed desk until GDRFA confirms they are in the arrival phase.

Peak banks remain the deployment trigger. Keep your usual connection buffer. A 12 to 15 second check only happens if an officer is in your hall with a device.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Are departing Dubai as a visitor, resident, or citizen You are in the current Click and Travel pool. Watch for a mobile officer in long banks; keep using smart gates when they are open.
Are arriving as an Emirati or UAE resident You are in the first arrival phase. A handheld check is possible when the team is deployed; otherwise use smart gates or a desk.
Are arriving on a tourist or other visitor visa Plan for smart gates or a staffed desk. GDRFA has said expansion is expected, but it is not in force as of the September 7 launch.
Are traveling with children, a stroller, or reduced mobility You are a stated priority when the mobile team is working that hall. Still allow a full immigration buffer.
Frequently Asked

What is Click and Travel at Dubai airports?

It is a GDRFA Dubai mobile passport-control service launched on September 7, 2026. Officers complete entry or departure checks on handheld biometric devices in the terminal instead of sending every passenger to a fixed counter.

Who can use Click and Travel on arrival in Dubai?

The first phase covers Emiratis and UAE residents only, according to Gulf News and The National quoting GDRFA. Visitors on tourist visas are not in that phase yet, though officials said expansion is planned.

Does Click and Travel replace Dubai smart gates?

No. Major General Talal Al Shanqiti said it is a backup for smart gates and the Red Carpet tunnel. Use those systems when you qualify. The mobile team is extra capacity for busy or irregular banks.

How long does a Click and Travel check take?

GDRFA Dubai says a transaction takes about 12 to 15 seconds. That is the device time, not a guaranteed hall wait. The service ran 31,373 transactions in the May to August 31, 2026 pilot.
