Denali Opens Car Access to Mile 30 on Sept 18

The braided gravel bed of the Teklanika River in autumn, spruce forest and yellowing tundra along the far bank with the bare ridges of the Alaska Range behind.

For four months of the year, a private car in Denali gets fifteen miles of the park road and then a barricade. From September 18 it gets thirty.

The park’s current conditions page sets the summer season at May 20 through September 17, with the last buses running on the 17th, and says the road then opens for personal vehicles to drive to Teklanika at mile 30. It is the one stretch of the year when the Denali Park Road is something you drive rather than something you ride.

At a Glance
  • September 17: last day of summer bus service, and the last day of the mile 15 car limit.
  • September 18: private vehicles may drive to Teklanika, mile 30, weather permitting.
  • How long: typically into mid October, but the road can close at mile 13 or mile 3 on any winter weather.
  • Watch out: the Denali Visitor Center runs daily only through September 23.

Fifteen Miles Becomes Thirty

All summer, private vehicles stop at Savage River, mile 15. Everything beyond it belongs to the bus system, which this year has been running no further than the East Fork Bridge at mile 43 because of the Pretty Rocks landslide.

The fall opening doubles the drivable road and changes what it opens onto. Mile 15 is still forested foothills; mile 30 puts you at the Teklanika River, a wide braided gravel bed with the Alaska Range rising behind it, which is the first point on the road where Denali National Park looks like its own photographs.

The Window Is Weather, Not Calendar

The park does not publish a closing date for the fall driving window, because it does not control one. Access generally holds into mid October and then ends with the first sustained snow.

The failure modes are specific. The road can close at Mountain Vista, mile 13, or at park headquarters, mile 3, at any time on winter weather, which means a drive that starts fine at the entrance can be turned around well short of Teklanika.

What Closes While the Road Opens

The bus depot shuts after September 17 along with the buses. The Denali Visitor Center runs daily through September 23, and the Winter Visitor Center opens on September 24, which is also the day backcountry permits move from the Backcountry Information Center to the winter building.

Further out, Eielson Visitor Center and Wonder Lake Campground are closed for the season already, casualties of the mile 43 closure rather than the calendar. Full bus service along the whole 92 mile road is not expected back until 2027.

Past Mile 43, on Foot

There is a separate change worth knowing about if you are fit and self sufficient. Since August 27, hikers and cyclists have been able to travel west of East Fork and across the new Pretty Rocks bridge, ground that has been off limits for years.

The park is blunt about the terms. Expect limited emergency response and long delays, carry everything, and if you are cycling assume there will be no bike space on buses leaving East Fork after 5 p.m., which leaves you riding the full 43 miles back.

Making the Drive Worth the Trip

The fall window suits a particular traveller: someone already in interior Alaska in late September who can move on a day’s notice when the forecast is clear. It is a poor thing to build a trip around from three thousand miles away, because the road may simply be shut at mile 13 when you arrive.

If you are working out where to sleep while you wait for a weather window, our guide to where to stay near Denali compares the bases along the highway. Reporting on the transition puts the usual end of the window at around October 15.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Are in Alaska between September 18 and mid October Drive it. This is the only time a private car reaches Teklanika.
Are booking a Denali trip from far away Do not build it around the drive. The road can close at mile 13 without notice.
Wanted the full 92 mile road Wait for 2027. Buses stop at mile 43 for the rest of this season.
Are arriving after September 23 Use the Winter Visitor Center, open from the 24th, not the main one.
Want to hike or bike past East Fork It is open since August 27, but carry everything and plan for a 43 mile ride back.
Planning Impact

The car limit doubles for a few weeks. Mile 15 becomes mile 30 on September 18.

Nothing about the window is guaranteed. Winter weather can shut the road at mile 3 or mile 13 on any day.

Services thin out as access widens. Buses end on the 17th and the main visitor center on the 23rd.
