Delta Air Lines SkyMiles members can check one case of wine for free on flights leaving five California airports starting Tuesday, October 6, 2026, AirlineGeeks reported. The airports are San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento and Sonoma County, and the case must go to a U.S. destination.
If you are deciding whether to carry bottles home in your suitcase or check them, our guide to carry-on vs checked bag walks through the tradeoffs, including how much room and weight each option leaves you.
- Perk: One case of wine checked free per qualifying trip.
- Starts: Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
- Airports: SFO, OAK, SJC, SMF and Sonoma County (STS).
- Who: SkyMiles members 21 or older on Delta flights within the U.S.
- Limits: Up to 12 bottles, 50 pounds and 62 linear inches.
Check the Case at the Delta Ticket Counter
You pack the wine in an approved shipping box or wine travel container, then present the case at the Delta ticket counter for inspection and check-in, according to AirlineGeeks. The case travels as checked baggage, and you pick it up at baggage claim when you land.
Delta said standard size and weight limits for checked baggage still apply. Live and Let’s Fly reported that a qualifying case can hold up to 12 standard 750 milliliter bottles in one box or container, with a maximum of 50 pounds and 62 linear inches. Extra cases, or a case that runs overweight or oversized, are charged at Delta’s normal baggage rates.
The perk only works in one direction. It applies when you depart from one of the five California airports, so a case you fly back to California does not qualify, according to Live and Let’s Fly.
Who Qualifies for the Free Case
You need to be an active SkyMiles member and at least 21 years old, Live and Let’s Fly reported. Both paid tickets and award tickets qualify, and you do not need Medallion elite status. SkyMiles membership is free to join, so a traveler without an account can sign up before the trip and add the number to the booking.
For travelers who already get a free checked bag through a Delta credit card or Medallion status, the wine case does not count against that allowance, according to the same report. That means a cardholder can check a regular suitcase and a case of wine without a bag fee on either.
The flight itself must be a Delta flight within the 50 states. Codeshare flights and flights on partner airlines are excluded, Live and Let’s Fly reported. If your itinerary includes a connection on another airline, check with Delta before you pack a case.
Packing Rules for the Wine Case
Bottles must be unopened and keep their original labels, and the case must be securely packed in a durable, leak resistant container with enough protective material, according to Live and Let’s Fly. Molded foam or pulp wine shippers are built for this job, and they help a case survive baggage handling.
Give yourself extra time at the airport. Because the case must be inspected at the ticket counter, you cannot simply drop it at a self service bag drop, so plan for the counter line on busy mornings.
Alaska and Southwest Already Fly Wine Free
Delta is not the first airline to waive fees for wine. Alaska Airlines has run Wine Flies Free since 2007 across 32 West Coast cities, and Southwest Airlines started Sip and Ship on April 24, 2026, at 19 airports in California, Oregon, Washington and Idaho, Stuck at the Airport reported. Both let travelers 21 and older check up to a case of wine free.
Delta’s version is narrower for now, with five airports and domestic Delta flights only. Delta said it is beginning with a select group of airports and aims to expand to more in due time, Live and Let’s Fly reported. If your trip centers on Napa or Sonoma, the Sonoma County Airport option puts the free case close to the wineries.
What Is Still Unclear?
Neither report says whether Basic Economy fares qualify or how long the program will run. Delta has not published a full terms page for the perk that we could find, so confirm the details with the agent at the ticket counter, and keep your SkyMiles number on the reservation before you arrive.
