DC Metro riders traveling Wednesday, September 9, should check the color and destination of their train before relying on a familiar midday trip. Orange and Silver line work is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with 17 minutes between Orange Line trains and Silver Line service running between Ashburn and Downtown Largo only.
The change matters for visitors connecting across Washington, including travelers using the Silver Line for Dulles International Airport. It is not a closure of the airport rail link or the entire Metro system. If you are arranging a sightseeing day, our Washington, D.C., itinerary guide can help group stops while you check the actual train route and work window separately.
- Next affected day: Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

- Orange Line: Scheduled 17-minute gaps between Vienna and New Carrollton.
- Silver Line: Ashburn to Downtown Largo only during the listed work.

Orange and Silver Service on Wednesday
WMATA’s weekday service notice, updated September 8, lists Orange and Silver line single tracking on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday’s scheduled midday window has already passed. Wednesday is the remaining day in that particular two-day work listing.
The notice gives 17 minutes between Orange Line trains from Vienna to New Carrollton. That number describes the scheduled gap between trains, not a guaranteed extra 17 minutes added to every journey. The effect depends partly on when you reach the platform and whether your trip needs a particular branch.
WMATA separately lists trains every four to five minutes between Rosslyn and Stadium-Armory. That is a shared central corridor, not a promise of a Silver Line train to Dulles every four to five minutes. An arriving train can serve a different destination from the one you need.
For Silver Line riders, the destination restriction is just as important as the wait. The listed service is Ashburn to Downtown Largo only. A passenger heading toward New Carrollton should plan around the Orange Line rather than assume any eastbound Silver train completes that journey.
The agency describes the work as destressing rail to help prevent heat-related rail kinks. It does not characterize this particular notice as a fresh accident or a systemwide emergency. The published weekday text does not identify an exact single-tracking segment, so this report does not borrow one from an older weekend closure map.
Does the Work Cut Off Dulles Airport?
No airport rail closure is announced in this weekday notice. Dulles is on the Silver Line’s Ashburn branch, which remains part of the listed Ashburn to Downtown Largo service. The airport-specific issue is to verify the correct train and leave enough room for the complete transfer, rather than treat the central corridor’s frequency as an airport timetable.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority’s Silver Line FAQ provides useful context that the track-work notice does not: the connection between the station and terminal uses an indoor pedestrian walkway of roughly 600 feet, described as about a five-minute walk. That is separate from the train journey and the time needed inside the terminal.
The airport authority also notes elevators at the station and terminal. Its guidance distinguishes access to the terminal from services at the Metro platform; travelers needing assistance should check their particular arrangements rather than assume airline services begin where they step off the train.
For an outbound flight, build the plan backward from the airline’s required airport arrival time. Check the train you actually need, allow for waiting and transfers, then include the station-to-terminal connection. The published work notice does not support a universal number of extra minutes that would be safe for every flight or starting point.
For an arriving flight, the same distinction works in reverse. A train shown for a shared downtown segment does not tell you when you will finish baggage collection or reach the Dulles platform. Use current station and route information once you know when you can actually start the rail trip.
| Your Trip | What to Check |
|---|---|
| Vienna to New Carrollton on Orange | Use the listed 17-minute train spacing when planning a midday departure. |
| Silver Line to Dulles or Ashburn | Check a Silver train specifically, not the combined central corridor frequency. |
| Eastbound toward New Carrollton | Do not assume a Silver train running to Downtown Largo serves that destination. |
| A trip outside the work window | Check current service rather than applying the midday work pattern all day. |
Other Lines Have a Different Planning Picture
The Tuesday and Wednesday entries list normal planned service for the Red, Yellow, Green and Blue lines. That is a meaningful limit on the story: the notice does not justify advising everyone in Washington to avoid Metro or switch to a car.
A traveler whose entire journey uses an unaffected line may have no reason to change the itinerary because of this planned Orange and Silver work. A traveler connecting onto one of those two lines should inspect the connecting leg rather than judge the whole journey by the first train.
Blue service is listed as normal, but that does not make a Blue train interchangeable with an Orange or Silver train at every station. Shared tracks in the center do not erase the separate outer branches. The destination displayed on the train remains important even when several line colors appear at the platform.
Likewise, normal planned service is not a guarantee against an unrelated delay. Read the weekday work plan for the scheduled changes, then check live information for anything that has happened since publication. Those two checks answer different questions.
When the Listed Work Ends
The affected Wednesday window ends at 3 p.m. in the published plan. WMATA lists normal service on all six lines for Thursday, September 10, and Friday, September 11. Those later entries help travelers avoid carrying Wednesday’s planned restrictions into the rest of the week.
The general operating hours shown for Tuesday through Thursday are 5 a.m. to midnight. Friday’s system hours extend to 2 a.m. Those are systemwide operating spans, not the first and last departures at every individual station.
That distinction is especially relevant to an early or late flight. The Dulles airport authority directs passengers to station-specific train information because a system opening time is not a promise that a train departs the airport at that exact minute.
If your schedule is flexible, compare traveling before or after the work window with keeping the original plan and allowing for the listed service. The notice establishes the planned midday constraint; it does not establish that any particular road alternative will be quicker or cheaper.
Check Live Alerts Before Leaving
WMATA points riders to MetroPulse, its rider tools and MetroAlerts for current information. Check the line, direction and destination together, then look for any active alert that changes the planned picture.
Airport connection: Keep Dulles rail service in the comparison, but use actual Silver Line information and include the terminal walk.
Timed appointment: Allow for the relevant branch’s service instead of assuming every train in the shared corridor is usable.
Later-week visit: Recheck the day’s notice. Wednesday’s restrictions are not a weeklong closure announcement.
