The Dakar Train Express Regional, known as TER, began public service to Blaise Diagne International Airport on September 28, 2026. Senegal’s land and air transport minister, Serigne Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye, inaugurated the 19 kilometer Diamniadio to airport section that day, the official Agence de Presse Senegalaise reported from the ceremony.

Travelers flying into Dakar can now ride the TER from the airport station to the city in about 55 minutes. If you are pairing a flight with time in the capital, start with our Dakar day-trip guide and treat the train as the new default transfer instead of a taxi on the congested coastal road.

At a Glance
  • Service start: Public TER trains on the Diamniadio to Blaise Diagne Airport section began September 28, 2026.
  • Travel time: About 55 minutes from central Dakar to the airport.
  • Frequency: Every 8 minutes Dakar to Diamniadio; every 24 minutes Diamniadio to the airport.
  • Fare: Free on the new section through October 4, 2026, then 4,000 CFA francs (about 6 euros) in second class.
  • Station walk: A 200 meter pedestrian walkway links the airport TER station to the terminal.

Airport Trains Now Run Every 24 Minutes

The new section is about 19 kilometers of double-track electrified railway between Diamniadio and Blaise Diagne International Airport, known locally as AIBD. That addition takes the TER to 55 kilometers from Dakar to the airport, minister Ndiaye said at the opening, according to APS.

On the original Dakar to Diamniadio axis, trains now run every 8 minutes, down from every 10 minutes. Between Diamniadio and the airport, one train runs every 24 minutes, the minister announced. That is the interval arriving passengers should use when they plan a connection off a long-haul flight.

Railway Gazette reported that SETER, the SNCF subsidiary that operates the line, has carried nearly 100 million passengers since the first 36 kilometer phase opened between Dakar and Diamniadio on December 27, 2021. The operator cites up to 196 trains a day on the network and a 98 percent punctuality rate on that existing service.

The airport station is a separate building from the air terminal. Railway Gazette said Turkey’s Summa built the station under an 8 billion CFA franc contract and linked it to the terminal with a 200 meter pedestrian walkway. Budget a few extra minutes after immigration for that walk, especially with luggage.

Phase 2 also added seven bimode trainsets that can run on electricity or diesel, bringing the fleet to 22, Ndiaye said. Railway Gazette identified the extra sets as four-car Coradia Polyvalent units ordered from CAF, with Alstom supplying major equipment from Reichshoffen.

Free Rides Last Through October 4

To let residents, airport workers, and arriving visitors try the new section, the minister made the Diamniadio to AIBD ride free for one week from the September 28 opening. Pulse Senegal dated that window as Monday, September 28 through Sunday, October 4, 2026 inclusive.

The free week covers only the new Diamniadio to airport section, not the whole Dakar to airport journey. If you board in central Dakar during that week, expect to pay the existing urban TER fare to Diamniadio, then continue to the airport at no extra charge on the new stretch. Confirm the boarding product at the ticket gate, because APS and Pulse both described the waiver as limited to the new section.

After October 4, the second-class fare for the city to airport trip is 4,000 CFA francs, about 6 euros, Le360 Afrique reported, citing AFP’s briefing from APIX, the public agency that owns the project. That is the load-bearing price we can verify. First-class fares were not in the minister’s APS remarks or the AFP dispatch, so do not assume a published first-class rate until SETER posts it.

The 4,000 CFA franc figure is the one to use when you compare the train with a taxi or ride-hail from central Dakar. Road times on that corridor vary sharply with traffic. The TER’s 55 minute timing is the planning number Pulse published after the opening, and it does not depend on the coastal highway queue.

Tickets, the Station Walk, and Road Time

Buy TER tickets at station machines or counters before you reach the platform, then keep the ticket for inspection. The airport station is inside the airport campus, not on the public highway, so you cannot treat it like a curbside bus stop. Follow airport signs for the TER or gare after you leave baggage claim, then use the 200 meter walkway.

Outbound travelers should reverse that path and add a buffer. A 24 minute airport-branch interval plus the walk, plus check-in, is a different problem from a 55 minute city ride. If your airline wants you at the desk three hours before a long-haul departure, leave central Dakar with at least that check-in window plus one missed-train interval.

The line is standard gauge, electrified at 25 kV 50 Hz, and designed for 160 km/h, Railway Gazette reported, with ETCS Level 2 signaling and GSM-R. Those are infrastructure facts, not a promise that every airport run will hit 160 km/h. Use the published 55 minute Dakar to airport timing until SETER posts a public timetable with station-by-station minutes.

Road traffic remains the alternative, not a backup that matches the train. Dakar’s coastal and inland approaches to Diass are routinely slow, which is why APIX and the transport ministry framed the airport rail as a substitute for that drive. If you have oversize sports gear, a late inbound flight, or a group that will not fit one taxi, compare the TER interval against a prebooked car instead of assuming the train is always faster door to door.

SETER has not, in the sources we read, published a luggage-size rule specific to the airport station. Treat this like other airport rail links: one cabin bag plus a checked suitcase is normal, and oversized items may be refused at the gate. If you are moving with surfboards, film cases, or a bicycle, confirm with the operator before you skip the taxi.

Youth Olympic Games and Later TER Stations

The airport extension opened a little more than a month before the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, Le360 Afrique reported from APIX. APS quoted Ndiaye saying the new section strengthens Senegal’s ability to move visitors for that event. If you are flying in for the Games, the TER is now the public option from Blaise Diagne to Diamniadio, where several competition venues sit, and on into Dakar.

A further station at Sebikotane is next, the minister said, following a decision by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. APS reported that contractors have already been selected and procurement completed. Until that station opens, a bus shuttle will run between Sebikotane and Diamniadio so residents can reach the TER, Ndiaye said.

APIX director of major works Latyr Niang told AFP that Phase 3 toward Thies, about 70 kilometers from the capital, is still at the study stage, with a later option toward Mbour on the coast. Those extensions are not in service and should not be booked as if they were. For this travel season, the live decision is Dakar, Diamniadio, and Blaise Diagne Airport only.

Ndiaye also used the opening to mark a safety record: more than 100 million TER passengers without an accident, APS reported. That is an operator claim about the first phase. It does not replace a live check of strikes, maintenance, or weather on the day you fly. Look up the day’s TER notices before you leave the hotel, the same way you would reconfirm a flight.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Land at Blaise Diagne through October 4 Ride the new section free from the airport station to Diamniadio, then pay the urban TER fare into Dakar if you continue.
Land on or after October 5 Budget 4,000 CFA francs in second class for the city to airport trip, about 6 euros, and keep cash or a local card for the gate.
Have a tight long-haul check-in in Dakar Leave the city with your airline’s check-in window plus one 24 minute airport-branch interval and the 200 meter walk.
Carry oversize gear or a large group Compare a prebooked car against the TER; the train interval is fixed, but luggage rules for the airport station were not in the opening notices.
Planning Impact

September 28, 2026 is the service start. Public TER trains now run to Blaise Diagne International Airport. Use the airport station and the 200 meter walkway instead of assuming a curbside rail stop.

October 4, 2026 is the last free day on the new section. After that date, plan on 4,000 CFA francs in second class for the city to airport trip unless SETER posts a different tariff.

The 24 minute airport-branch interval is the connection number. Dakar to Diamniadio is every 8 minutes, but the airport tail is slower. Build the longer interval into flight connections.
