Lebanese travelers applying for a Cyprus visa now need a biometric passport. The requirement took effect September 1, 2026, according to the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Beirut. But renewing a passport does not necessarily mean starting a valid long-term Cyprus visa over: the embassy says travelers can retain that visa in their canceled non-biometric passport if they also carry their new, valid biometric passport.
The immediate decision is whether you need a new visa application or already have a usable visa in an older document. Resolve that before committing to a trip. Once the paperwork is settled, our Larnaca city-walk guide can help organize a visit around the waterfront, Saint Lazarus Church and the old town without treating document preparation as an afterthought.
- Effective date: September 1, 2026, for Lebanese passports submitted with Cyprus visa applications.
- New application: A biometric Lebanese passport is required; the passport alone does not replace a visa.
- Existing long-term visa: Carry the canceled passport containing the valid visa together with the new, valid biometric passport.
- Application route: VFS Global accepts applications on the embassy’s behalf. The published submission window closes 15 calendar days before the intended visit.
The September 1 Rule Changes the Passport You Submit
The Cyprus embassy’s visa information page states the new requirement directly. Its notice concerns Lebanese passports used to apply for travel visas to Cyprus. That is narrower than a new restriction on everyone visiting Cyprus, and it should not be read as a change to the passport requirements of every nationality living in Lebanon.
LBCI reported the embassy announcement on August 20, ahead of the September start. The embassy connects the change to Lebanese authorities’ announcement that non-biometric passports would be canceled and could no longer be used to leave Lebanon. The Cyprus notice does not supply a separate, universal exit deadline that travelers should apply to every destination.
For an ordinary Lebanese passport holder who needs a Cyprus visa, the practical check is the passport type, not simply the expiry date printed inside it. A future expiry date does not answer the biometric requirement. If you are uncertain which document you hold, confirm that with the passport-issuing authority before arranging the visa appointment.
A Valid Visa in the Old Passport Can Still Be Used
The exception is especially useful for repeat visitors. The embassy says a long-term Cyprus visa issued in a non-biometric passport remains valid after that passport is canceled, provided the traveler presents both that document and a new, valid biometric passport. The old booklet carries the visa; the new one supplies the current travel document.
Do not discard the canceled passport just because a replacement has arrived. Under this instruction, carrying only the new booklet would leave the visa in a document you have not brought. Likewise, carrying only the old passport would not meet the embassy’s stated two-document condition. Keep the pair together when preparing the documents for the journey.
This is preservation of an existing valid visa, not an extension of its validity. An expired visa is not made current by renewing a passport. Nor does the announcement say a visa is automatically transferred into the new booklet. If the visa’s dates, entries or conditions do not cover the planned trip, ask the embassy about your particular case instead of assuming the passport exception resolves it.
VFS Appointments and Passport Biometrics Are Separate Checks
The embassy says visa applications have been accepted through VFS Global on its behalf since April 1, 2026. Its official visa page includes the appointment link. Use that route to locate the current application service rather than relying on an old instruction to submit directly at the embassy or an unofficial booking intermediary.
The published window allows applications up to six months before the intended travel date and requires submission no later than 15 calendar days before the intended visit. Those are application-timing instructions. They are not a guarantee that a decision will arrive within 15 days, or evidence that an appointment will be available when you want one.
There is also an in-person requirement: applicants aged 12 and above must attend the visa center for biometric data collection. Holding a biometric passport does not, under these published instructions, remove that attendance step. The document’s biometric features and the visa application’s collection process are separate requirements, even though both use the same word.
The Rest of the Application File Still Matters
The passport must remain valid for at least three months after the planned return, have at least two blank visa pages and have been issued within the previous ten years. The checklist also asks for an old passport when the current one was recently issued. That can matter even for an applicant who is not relying on the long-term visa exception.
Other listed documents include the completed English-language application, a recent passport-size photograph, passport copies and copies of previous visas and travel stamps. Travel evidence includes a round-trip booking or reservation and accommodation or host documentation appropriate to the stay. Employment, income and financial evidence are also part of the checklist; a replacement passport does not substitute for them.
Travel medical insurance must cover the Cyprus stay, with at least €30,000 per applicant and the specified emergency treatment and medical repatriation protection. Families should review the separate minor-consent and supporting-document instructions. The embassy can request further documents or an interview, so use the full official checklist for your circumstances rather than treating these highlights as a complete application packet.
Check the Visa Route Before Paying for the Trip
Start by separating three questions: do you need a visa, is your passport acceptable, and does an existing visa cover this visit? The embassy lists an exemption for holders of Lebanese diplomatic, special and service passports under the bilateral agreement. This new-application story is not a claim that those exempt categories must suddenly apply.
For everyone preparing an application under the ordinary-passport route, leave room for document renewal and the appointment before committing to a departure date. A booking reservation requested in the application checklist is not the same as an instruction to buy a nonrefundable ticket. Check cancellation terms before spending money that depends on a visa decision.
| Your Situation | Next Check |
|---|---|
| Applying with a Lebanese passport | Confirm it is biometric before submitting the new Cyprus visa application. |
| Valid long-term visa in a canceled non-biometric passport | Bring that passport and the new, valid biometric passport for travel. |
| Visa has expired | Do not treat passport renewal as an extension of visa validity. |
| Applicant aged 12 or above | Plan attendance at the visa center for biometric data collection. |
September 1 is the passport requirement’s start. It is already in effect, not a future deadline.
The application date is the scheduling gate. Allow for the published submission window, appointment availability and any additional document requests.
Departure is the two-passport check. If relying on the preserved visa, pack both required documents rather than only the replacement booklet.
Do Lebanese travelers need biometric passports for Cyprus visas?
Yes, for new applications using Lebanese passports from September 1, 2026. The embassy says only biometric Lebanese passports are accepted for that purpose. This requirement does not make a biometric passport a visa substitute or automatically change the rules for other nationalities.
Can I use a Cyprus visa in my canceled Lebanese passport?
The embassy says an existing valid long-term Cyprus visa remains usable if you present the canceled non-biometric passport containing it together with your new, valid biometric passport. The instruction does not extend an expired visa or automatically move the visa into the new document.
How early should I apply for a Cyprus visa in Lebanon?
The published window opens six months before the intended trip and requires submission no later than 15 calendar days before the visit. Applications go through VFS Global on the embassy’s behalf. The 15-day instruction is not a promised processing time.
Does a biometric passport let me skip the visa appointment?
No such exemption appears in the published instructions. Applicants aged 12 and above must attend the visa center in person for biometric data collection. Check the official appointment route and the full supporting-document list before scheduling around a planned departure.
