East Rim Drive Closed at Crater Lake for Construction

ShareEmailWhatsAppLinkedInXFacebook
View of Crater Lake and the caldera wall from East Rim Drive in Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

Crater Lake National Park’s current conditions page says East Rim Drive is closed from Park Headquarters to Phantom Ship Overlook for road construction. That break cuts the historic Rim Drive loop, so drivers cannot circumnavigate the caldera in one pass while the work is underway.

West Rim Drive, the North Entrance Road, and East Rim Drive from North Junction to Phantom Ship Overlook remain open, according to the same National Park Service listing. If you are planning a September visit to Crater Lake National Park, treat the rim as two out-and-back runs and recheck the park’s conditions page the morning you drive.

At a Glance
  • Closed now: East Rim Drive from Park Headquarters to Phantom Ship Overlook for road construction.
  • Still open: West Rim Drive, North Entrance Road, and East Rim Drive from North Junction to Phantom Ship Overlook.
  • Car-blocked stops: Sun Notch, Vidae Falls, the Crater Peak trailhead, and Pinnacles Road.
  • Shore access: Cleetwood Cove Trail is closed for a multi-year rehabilitation; the park remains open.
  • Season watch: Mazama Village gas is listed through September 30, and East Rim Drive typically closes for winter on November 1 or earlier.

East Rim Drive Is Closed From Headquarters to Phantom Ship

The National Park Service highlights the closure in bold: East Rim Drive from Park Headquarters to Phantom Ship Overlook is closed for road construction. The same page lists East Rim Drive from North Junction to Phantom Ship Overlook as open. Phantom Ship Overlook is still reachable from the north, but you cannot continue south from headquarters along that rim.

Visit Oregon independently restated that split in an August 2026 update, writing that the closed segment currently runs from Park Headquarters to Phantom Ship Overlook and that Rim Drive is no longer a loop. The park has not posted a reopen date for this specific construction segment, so the useful plan is the current map, not a hoped-for finish week.

The work sits inside a larger rehabilitation funded through the Great American Outdoors Act. A July 2023 National Park Service news release described an approximately $56 million project to improve about 19 miles of East Rim Drive and a portion of Cloudcap Spur Road, with a roughly five-year schedule.

Sun Notch, Vidae Falls, and Pinnacles Access Are Cut Off

The current conditions page is explicit about the side effects. There is no access to the Crater Peak and Sun Notch trailheads while the headquarters-to-Phantom Ship segment is closed, and there is no access to Vidae Falls or the nearby picnic area. Sun Notch is the classic close view of Phantom Ship. You can still see the formation from Phantom Ship Overlook if you approach from the north.

Pinnacles Road is listed as open in the park’s road table, with a hard caveat: it is only accessible at this time by hiking or biking because of the road construction. Crater Peak Trail is reachable only by hiking or biking along Grayback Road to the trailhead. If those stops are the reason for your day, skip them by car or add a long walk.

Cloudcap Overlook, the highest paved overlook in the park, is listed as open, with access via East Rim Drive near the Mount Scott Trailhead. That is on the open East Rim segment, not on the closed headquarters stretch. Mount Scott Trail itself is among the trails the park now lists as open; Cleetwood Cove is the named exception.

Cleetwood Cove Trail Remains Closed This Season

Separately from the East Rim Drive paving, the Cleetwood Cove Trail is closed for a major construction project and will remain so all season. That trail is the only permitted access to the shore of Crater Lake. The park’s Cleetwood Cove Trail and Marina Rehabilitation page says the 1.1-mile trail is closed because of limited access and rockfall hazards, with construction beginning in spring 2026 and expected to take three summers.

That closure removes swimming, shoreline fishing, and concessioner boat tours, including Wizard Island landings, for as long as the trail is shut. Visit Oregon describes shore access as closed through 2028, with a reopen target of summer 2029. The National Park Service’s own project page is more cautious: three summers of work, with frequent updates promised. Until the park publishes a new trail status, plan on rim views only.

The park remains open. The Cleetwood page says visitors can still get excellent views of the lake from many locations along Rim Drive and park trails. That is the right expectation for a 2026 trip: the caldera is still the destination, but the water’s edge is not.

West Rim Drive, Lodging, and Services Stay Open

Highway 62 through the park and the road to Rim Village are open. West Rim Drive and the North Entrance Road are open. Lake views remain available along the Rim Village promenade and along the open sections of Rim Drive, weather permitting. Steel Information Center is listed 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily, and the Rim Village Visitor Contact Station is listed 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM daily.

Crater Lake Lodge and the Cabins at Mazama Village are open for the season. Mazama Campground has loops A and B open on a first-come, first-served basis. If you still need a bed after those fill, Deep Arrival’s guide to where to stay near Crater Lake National Park covers the towns outside the gate. Rim Cafe, Annie Creek Restaurant, and the Mazama Camper Store are among the concession facilities the park lists as open.

Gas is available in the park from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily at Mazama Village through September 30. After that date, the park points visitors to Prospect on Highway 62, the Crater Lake Junction Travel Center on Highway 97, and Diamond Lake Resort off Highway 138. There are no cell towers in the park.

How to Route a September Day Without the Loop

Do not build an itinerary that assumes a continuous 33-mile circuit. From Rim Village, drive West Rim Drive north past Discovery Point and Watchman Overlook to North Junction. From there you can continue onto the open East Rim segment as far as Phantom Ship Overlook, including Cloudcap if you want the highest paved viewpoint, then reverse the same road.

If you are flying in, the practical airports are Medford and the other options in Deep Arrival’s closest airport to Crater Lake guide, then a long drive to the south or west entrance. Recheck Oregon’s TripCheck site for restrictions outside the park. Inside the park, the conditions page is the source of truth for Rim Drive, not a printed loop map from an older guidebook.

The 2026 Ride the Rim event is cancelled. An April 6, 2026, National Park Service news release said the park cancelled the ride because of major construction, including East Rim Drive paving and Cleetwood Cove Trail work. Do not hold a September Saturday for a vehicle-free East Rim.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Want the classic full Rim Drive loop Do not plan it now. The headquarters-to-Phantom Ship segment is closed, and NPS has not posted a reopen date for that stretch.
Want Phantom Ship Overlook or Cloudcap Approach from the north via North Junction. Those points are on the open East Rim segment, not on the closed headquarters road.
Want Sun Notch, Vidae Falls, or Pinnacles by car Skip them. The park says those trailheads and the falls picnic area have no access, and Pinnacles Road is hike or bike only.
Want to swim, boat, or stand on the shore Do not come for that this season. Cleetwood Cove Trail is closed for a multi-year rehabilitation.
Planning Impact

Today’s conditions page is the gate. Recheck the Crater Lake current conditions listing before you leave, because the closed East Rim segment is an active construction zone, not a seasonal snow closure with a fixed date.

September 30 is the in-park gas date. Mazama Village fuel is listed through that day. After it, plan a fill-up at Prospect, Highway 97, or Diamond Lake before you climb to the rim.

November 1 is the usual winter cutoff. East Rim Drive typically closes on November 1 or earlier with the first heavy snow, even after this construction segment changes.

Frequently Asked

Can I drive all the way around Crater Lake right now?

No. The National Park Service says East Rim Drive is closed from Park Headquarters to Phantom Ship Overlook for construction, so Rim Drive is not a loop.

Is Phantom Ship Overlook closed?

No. East Rim Drive from North Junction to Phantom Ship Overlook is listed as open. You reach that overlook from the north, not by continuing south from Park Headquarters.

Can I hike to the water at Cleetwood Cove?

No. The Cleetwood Cove Trail is closed all season for rehabilitation. It is the only permitted shore access, so swimming and boat tours are off the table until the park reopens the trail.

Is Ride the Rim happening in September 2026?

No. Crater Lake National Park cancelled the 2026 Ride the Rim event on April 6, 2026, citing East Rim Drive paving and other construction zones.
