Cape Girardeau Orlando Flights: What to Book for December 16

Cape Girardeau is getting a nonstop flight to Central Florida this winter, but travelers should check the airport code before booking a theme park transfer. Contour Airlines announced September 9 that flights to Orlando Sanford International Airport will operate Wednesdays and Saturdays from December 16, 2026, through March 27, 2027, giving Southeast Missouri a new alternative to connecting or driving to a larger airport.

The route links Cape Girardeau Regional Airport, CGI, with Sanford, SFB, rather than Orlando International, MCO. For residents near Cape Girardeau, the useful comparison is the entire trip: a hometown departure and free airport parking against a twice-weekly schedule, the actual airfare and the cost of reaching the Florida hotel from Sanford.

At a Glance
  • Start: December 16, 2026, with the announced season ending March 27, 2027.
  • Days: Wednesdays and Saturdays in both directions, not daily service.
  • Arrival airport: Orlando Sanford, airport code SFB. Do not book an MCO pickup for this flight.
  • Aircraft: A 30-seat regional jet, according to Contour’s announcement, with snacks and beverages included.
  • Cost check: CGI parking is free, but checked bags depend on the Contour fare purchased.

A Winter Nonstop From Southeast Missouri

Contour’s September 9 announcement gives the precise operating window and schedule, while Cape Girardeau Regional Airport’s own notice confirms the new destination. The airport identifies nearby communities including Jackson, Perryville, Paducah and Carbondale as part of the market that may find the new departure point useful.

The benefit is straightforward for someone who otherwise drives to St. Louis before flying to Florida: a nonstop from CGI removes that airport drive from the proposed itinerary. It does not automatically make the new flight the cheapest or fastest option for every household, particularly if the Wednesday and Saturday pattern forces an additional hotel night.

The announcement follows Contour’s summer Pensacola service, but Sanford and Pensacola serve different Florida trips. A theme park vacation near Orlando should be priced around the new SFB route itself, rather than assuming an older Pensacola fare, airport transfer or seasonal timetable carries over to the winter operation.

KBSI FOX23’s local report adds that the Orlando and Pensacola flights are outside the federally supported Essential Air Service program, citing airport officials. That distinction does not change the announced booking dates, but it does separate these seasonal leisure routes from the airport’s other scheduled connections and avoids presenting the launch as a federal service guarantee.

Wednesday and Saturday Set the Length of the Trip

The published schedule shows the flight leaving Cape Girardeau at 9:40 a.m. and reaching Sanford at 1 p.m., with the return departing Sanford at 1:50 p.m. and arriving in Cape Girardeau at 3:10 p.m. The carrier lists local times, so the difference between the two clocks is not the same thing as elapsed flight time.

The pattern creates three-night, four-night and weeklong combinations, subject to actual seat availability. A Wednesday outbound and Saturday return gives three nights away, while Saturday to Wednesday gives four; travelers with a fixed school, work or hotel calendar should compare those combinations before committing to tickets elsewhere in the trip.

A twice-weekly route is also a different proposition from a hub with several daily departures. Someone who must be home on a particular evening should examine the schedule and the ticket conditions carefully, without assuming that another Contour flight on the same route will be available later that day if plans change.

Sanford Is Not Orlando International

The most consequential booking detail is SFB. The flight does not arrive at MCO, and an airport transfer reserved for Orlando International will not automatically collect passengers at Sanford; use the full airport name when getting a rental-car quote, asking a hotel about a shuttle or sending arrival details to a driver.

For Disney trips, our Sanford Airport to Disney transport guide is the relevant starting point. The flight announcement establishes access to Central Florida, not an included theme park transfer, admission ticket, hotel package or guaranteed drive time to a particular resort.

Sanford’s official ground transportation page places rideshare, taxi and prearranged shuttle pickup across the street from baggage claim areas 1 through 3. That is useful arrival information, but travelers should still obtain a quote for the actual destination and party size instead of treating all airport transportation choices as interchangeable.

The airport also lists several on-site rental-car companies, including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz and National. Compare the SFB pickup and return location on the reservation with the flight, especially if a search engine displays a cheaper car at another Orlando-area branch or airport.

Free Parking Does Not Mean Every Bag Is Free

CGI’s passenger information page confirms free short- and long-term terminal parking year-round. That can change the total cost of a winter getaway, but it is a saving to calculate alongside the fare and Florida ground transportation, not a reason to assume the new route wins every price comparison.

Contour’s current baggage policy lists a $45 first checked bag for Super Saver and Standard fares, with the first bag included on Flexible fares. The second checked bag is $55, and fees apply per person, each way; these rules took effect May 1, 2026, rather than being a new charge introduced with the Sanford route.

For one traveler checking one ordinary bag in each direction on a Standard fare, that adds $90 to a round trip under the published rules. Use that arithmetic when comparing Flexible with Standard, while also comparing the fare conditions; a higher fare may include different terms, and baggage alone does not establish which ticket is better.

The airline generally allows a carry-on and a personal item on domestic trips, with a maximum carry-on size of 22 by 14 by 9 inches. On the regional aircraft, an item that will not fit in the cabin may be collected before boarding and returned planeside, so keep essential items accessible rather than assuming every bag stays overhead.

Book the Flight Before Promising a Park Day

A scheduled 1 p.m. Sanford arrival can support an afternoon arrival at the hotel, but it is not a promise of a full theme park day. Build the first day’s plans around collecting bags, obtaining the vehicle or transfer and reaching the accommodation, rather than spending on a time-specific activity solely because the flight lands around lunchtime.

The new service is announced, not yet operating, and the sources do not establish a launch-sale price or a discount-booking deadline. Compare a current quote for the complete return itinerary before paying for nonrefundable rooms; the meaningful news is the new nonstop option and its dates, not an unverified claim that seats are almost gone.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to compare
Usually drive to a larger airport Price CGI with free parking against that drive, parking and the alternative flight.
Are going to Disney or Universal Get a transfer quote from SFB, not MCO, before comparing totals.
Need one checked bag each way Add the applicable bag fees to Standard or Super Saver before comparing Flexible.
Planning Impact

December 16 is the planned first departure. Check the actual itinerary before booking the rest of a winter trip.

Wednesday and Saturday are the itinerary gates. Match both travel days to the hotel stay.

March 27 is the announced season’s endpoint. Do not assume April flights are part of this launch.

Frequently Asked

When do Cape Girardeau to Orlando flights start?

Contour plans to start the nonstop Orlando Sanford service December 16, 2026, with Wednesday and Saturday flights through March 27, 2027.

Does this flight land at MCO?

No. It lands at Orlando Sanford International Airport, SFB, so car rentals, shuttle reservations and pickups must use that airport.

Are checked bags included?

That depends on the fare. Contour currently includes the first checked bag with Flexible, while Super Saver and Standard list a first-bag fee of $45 each way.

Is the Florida flight year-round?

The announced operation is seasonal. The published December-to-March window should not be extended to other months without checking a new schedule.
