The Clayfield Opens Sept. 17 in Niagara-on-the-Lake

The Clayfield, a 102-room luxury hotel just outside Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, will open September 17, 2026, developers told a local ceremony this week, according to Niagara This Week. The property at 18 Clayfield Commons is the hotel centerpiece of a mixed-use district and will operate as part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt.

Travelers planning a Niagara wine-country stay can now treat September 17 as the first advertised check-in date, then compare it against other Niagara lodging if they also want a Falls-side base. Deep Arrival’s where to stay in Niagara Falls guide remains the better next click for people splitting nights between the Falls and the vineyards.

At a Glance
  • Opens: September 17, 2026, per developers quoted by Niagara This Week.
  • Size and brand: 102 rooms in The Unbound Collection by Hyatt.
  • Address: 18 Clayfield Commons, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.
  • On site: Restaurant, bar, rooftop terrace, and spa.
  • Nearby: Stratus Vineyards sits across Niagara Stone Road; Old Town is a short hop, not a doorstep walk to Queen Street.

September 17 Is the First Night Guests Can Check In

John Hawley, founder of The Village development and co-owner of the hotel, and David Feldberg, president and chief executive of Stratus Vineyards and furniture maker Teknion, marked the opening at the property on Wednesday, Niagara This Week reported on September 12. Hawley called the seven-year path “surreal.” Feldberg said the pair first talked about a hotel in 2019.

The hotel had been scheduled to open in May. Hawley told the paper the project ran over budget and missed that spring target. Ground broke in 2025. He did not disclose the cost and described the hotel as a long-term bet on the Niagara region.

Hyatt’s own April 6, 2026, newsroom release had placed the opening in “mid-summer 2026” and said the hotel was already accepting reservations. The September 17 date from the developers is the first public calendar day attached to guest arrival. Treat the Hyatt mid-summer line as the earlier window, not a second opening.

What the 102-Room Hotel Puts on the Property

Niagara This Week describes a 102-room hotel with a bar, restaurant, rooftop terrace, and spa, sitting on 7.2 hectares (about 18 acres) that will also take office and retail space under the Clayfield Commons name. The hotel is the first piece of that district to open. Retail around it will follow, and the paper did not publish a shop-by-shop opening list.

Hyatt’s April announcement filled in the design brief without quoting room rates or a restaurant name. Interiors are meant to pull from Niagara-on-the-Lake’s clay soils and vineyard geometry, with warm ochres, soft greys, earth tones, and natural materials. The company called that look “earth elegance.”

The Spa at The Clayfield, Hyatt said, will use mineral-rich clay and vineyard cues, including clay body rituals and vinotherapy that uses grape-derived ingredients. Hyatt also said the hotel will collaborate with Stratus Vineyards on curated tastings and guest experiences. Feldberg built Stratus on Niagara Stone Road in 2005, across the street from the hotel site, Niagara This Week noted.

The name Clayfield comes from the clay in Niagara soils that Hawley has called one of the world’s most bountiful growing areas. That naming story is local color. The traveler fact is the vineyard setting next to Stratus, not a museum stop in the lobby.

Hyatt Unbound Collection Places the Hotel in Wine Country

The Clayfield is not a Hyatt-branded box in the classic sense. It joins The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, the company’s group of independent hotels that keep their own names and stories. Hyatt announced the affiliation on April 6, 2026, as one of four Americas additions for the collection’s 10th year.

For a traveler, the useful part of that affiliation is distribution and loyalty plumbing, not a new brand name on the door. The hotel can be found through Hyatt’s Unbound Collection listing, and the April release said reservations were already open. Confirm live availability for nights on and after September 17 before you lock a wine-country weekend around the opening.

Location is the other decision. Niagara This Week places the hotel just outside Old Town, not on Queen Street. Queen Street is the compact spine of shops, theatres, and restaurants that most visitors mean when they say Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Clayfield is built as a wine-country address next to Stratus, with Old Town and Lake Ontario beaches in easy reach rather than out the lobby door.

That split matters if you want to walk to dinner on Queen Street every night. Budget a short ride or a planned walk. If the point of the trip is tastings, the Stratus pairing and the vineyard setting are the pitch Hyatt and the owners are making. Niagara Falls remains a separate outing; Deep Arrival’s things to do in Niagara Falls ranking is the planning page for that half-day, not a substitute for Old Town.

How to Plan a Niagara-on-the-Lake Stay Around the Opening

If you want to be among the first guests, hold September 17 as the start of stayable inventory and book only dates you can actually use. Opening weeks at new hotels often mean a restaurant, spa, or rooftop that is still ramping. Hyatt’s April copy described those outlets as part of the offer; Niagara This Week confirmed they exist on the property. Neither source published first-week hours.

If you are choosing between The Clayfield and a Falls hotel, decide which night is the wine night and which night is the Falls night. A Falls hotel puts you on the gorge and the park loop. The Clayfield puts you on Niagara Stone Road, next to a winery, with Old Town nearby. Mixing both in one trip is normal; trying to do both as a walkable stay from one lobby is not.

Hyatt said in April that the hotel was accepting reservations. The developers have now named a first night. Use both facts: the booking channel has been advertised for months, and the stayable date is September 17. If a third-party calendar shows rooms before that night, treat it as a data error until the hotel or Hyatt confirms an earlier soft opening, which neither source has announced.

Other New Hotels Are Already Rising Nearby

The Clayfield is the first of several hotels Niagara This Week listed as under construction or proposed in town. Two Sisters Resorts is building a four-storey, 129-suite luxury hotel on the former Parliament Oak school site on King Street. Niagara York Road Inc., overseen by Hamilton developer Darko Vranich, is building a seven-storey, 227-room hotel and a one-storey restaurant near Holiday Inn Express and Staybridge Suites on York Road.

Those projects do not have opening dates in the September 12 report. They are the reason The Clayfield’s 102 rooms will not be the last new keys in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and they are not substitutes for a September stay. If you can wait into a later season, watch those sites. If you need a wine-country hotel this month, The Clayfield is the one with a public date.

Hawley told Niagara This Week the hotel raises the bar in town and that the owners see a long future in the region. That is owner language, not a quality score. The traveler test is narrower: a dated opening, a named Hyatt collection, a 102-room count, and a location next to Stratus rather than on Queen Street.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Want a wine-country hotel as soon as it is stayable Book nights on or after September 17 and confirm the Hyatt Unbound listing still shows those dates.
Want to walk Queen Street for every meal Know The Clayfield sits just outside Old Town; plan a short ride to the clock tower district.
Want Niagara Falls and vineyards in one trip Split the stay or day-trip the Falls; do not expect a gorge-front walk from Clayfield Commons.
Can wait for more new rooms in town Track the 129-suite Two Sisters project and the 227-room York Road hotel; neither has a public opening date yet.
Planning Impact

September 17 is the first advertised check-in night. Book on or after that date and treat any calendar that shows earlier rooms as unverified unless the hotel publishes a soft opening.

Hyatt’s April listing is the booking channel, not the opening date. The newsroom said reservations were already open; the developers supplied the stayable day this week.

Other new hotels in town have no public dates yet. The 129-suite Two Sisters project and the 227-room York Road hotel are still construction news, not inventory you can hold for September.
