Citi Strata Bonus Points Now Once Per Lifetime, Not 48 Months

Citi has rewritten the welcome bonus rules on its Strata cards. The old test was whether you had earned a bonus on the card in the past 48 months. The new wording on Citi’s own application pages says the bonus is not available if you currently have or previously had the card, which reads as once per lifetime.

If you have never held a Strata Premier, Strata Elite or Strata card, nothing changes for you except that your first bonus now matters more, because by Citi’s wording it may be your only one. If you held one years ago and were waiting for the 48-month clock to reset, Citi’s application pages now say that bonus is not available to you.

The points still go where they did before, including Citi’s newest airline partner, Japan Airlines, so the bonus you do earn keeps its value for travel.

At a Glance
  • What changed: Strata bonus eligibility moved from a 48-month window to “currently have or previously had.”
  • Strata Premier: no bonus if you have or had a Strata Premier or the older Citi Premier.
  • Strata Elite: no bonus if you have or had a Strata Elite.
  • Strata (no annual fee): no bonus if you have or had a Strata or Strata Student.
  • Not changed: Citi’s American Airlines cards still use 48-month language.

What Citi’s Application Pages Now Say

The new language sits in the offer terms on each card’s page at citi.com. For the Citi Strata Premier, the bonus is “not available if you currently have or previously had a Citi Strata Premier or a Citi Premier account.” The Strata Elite and no-annual-fee Strata pages use the same structure for their own products, and each adds that eligibility can also depend on “your history of opening, closing and using credit cards.”

Doctor of Credit reported the change on September 20, noting that the previous Strata Premier wording barred a bonus only if you had received one for the Premier or Strata Premier in the past 48 months. One Mile at a Time confirmed the new Strata Elite wording and noted that Citi’s American Airlines cards were left on the 48-month rule.

Each Card Is Its Own Lifetime Rule

The rules are written card by card, not as one rule for the whole family. Holding a no-annual-fee Strata does not, by the wording, block a Strata Premier bonus, and a Strata Premier history does not block a Strata Elite bonus. The one crossover is on the Strata Premier, which also counts the older Citi Premier card, the product it replaced.

That makes the order you apply in worth a moment’s thought. A traveler building toward Citi’s premium card can still earn a bonus on each product once. What no longer works is holding a card, closing it, and coming back four years later for a second bonus on the same product.

Lifetime on Paper, Unclear in Practice

Neither report could say how strictly Citi will enforce the wording. One Mile at a Time pointed out that other issuers with lifetime language have in practice looked back over a limited number of years, and that it is not yet clear whether Citi changed its systems or only the text on the page. Doctor of Credit likewise flagged enforcement as unknown.

The safe reading is the one on the page: if you have ever held the card, assume the bonus is not available, and do not open the card for a bonus you may not receive. Data points from applicants over the coming months will show whether Citi applies a shorter window in practice.

For readers moving points to airlines, the bonus rules do not change transfer ratios. Citi’s current 30% Japan Airlines transfer bonus runs through October 24, and it applies to points you already hold.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Have never held any Strata card You remain eligible; pick your first card knowing the bonus is one per card.
Once held a Citi Premier or Strata Premier Assume no Strata Premier bonus under the new wording.
Hold a no-annual-fee Strata By the wording, you can still earn a Strata Premier or Strata Elite bonus.
Planned to close and reapply after 48 months That route no longer matches Citi’s terms.
Hold a Citi American Airlines card No change; those cards still show 48-month language.
Planning Impact

One bonus per card. The Strata Premier, Strata Elite and Strata each carry their own lifetime rule.

Premier history counts. The older Citi Premier blocks a Strata Premier bonus.

Enforcement unknown. Treat the page wording as the rule until data says otherwise.
