Citi Adds Japan Airlines Transfers: 30% Bonus Ends Oct 24

Citi ThankYou points can now be moved to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank, and for the first five weeks they go further than they will afterwards. A 30% transfer bonus runs through October 24, 2026, which turns 1,000 points into 1,300 JAL miles on Citi’s annual-fee cards.

That makes this a deadline story as much as a new-partner story. The standard rate that follows is 1,000 points to 1,000 miles on annual-fee cards and 1,000 to 700 on no-annual-fee cards, so the bonus is worth planning around only if you already know what you would book.

If you are weighing Japan Airlines for a trip, our guide to Japan Airlines covers the network, cabins and baggage rules before you move a single point.

  • Mile life: JAL miles expire after 36 months, so do not park points speculatively.

Citi Adds Japan Airlines at 1:1 for Annual-Fee Cards

Doctor of Credit reported the new partnership on September 20, with a base ratio of 1,000 ThankYou points to 1,000 JAL miles for annual-fee cardmembers and 1,000 to 700 for no-annual-fee cardmembers. View from the Wing reported the same launch the same day and named the Citi Strata Elite and Strata Premier as the cards that earn the full rate.

The split matters. A no-annual-fee Citi card can still reach JAL, but at a 30% haircut, so the same award costs noticeably more points than it does from a Strata Premier or Strata Elite account.

Japan Airlines is not new to transferable points. Doctor of Credit noted that JAL has recently run transfer bonuses with other programs, including Bilt and Capital One, so Citi is catching up rather than breaking ground.

What the 30% Bonus Changes in Points

The bonus is easiest to read as a discount on the miles you need. During the promotion, every 10,000 JAL miles costs roughly 7,700 points from an annual-fee card, against 10,000 points at the standard rate. From a no-annual-fee card, the same 10,000 miles costs roughly 11,000 points during the bonus and about 14,300 afterwards.

Neither report gave a processing time for the new partner, and first transfers to a new airline are sometimes slower than established ones. Leave a few days of margin rather than moving points on October 24 itself, and make sure the name on your JAL Mileage Bank account matches the name on your Citi account before you start.

On a large award, that gap is thousands of points. On an award you never book, it is nothing, which is why the order of operations below matters.

Find the Award First, Then Transfer

Japan Airlines Mileage Bank is useful well beyond JAL’s own flights. View from the Wing highlighted awards on partners including American, Emirates, LATAM and Air France, and pointed to the value of JAL miles for premium cabins on those airlines.

The traveler decision is simple. Search for the award seat you want on the JAL Mileage Bank site first, confirm the mileage price and the taxes and fees, and only then transfer, before October 24. Points transfers out of ThankYou should be treated as final, and JAL miles carry a 36-month life, so moving points without a booking in view only adds risk.

Using the Miles for a Trip to Japan

If Japan itself is the goal, compare seats before you commit: our review of Japan Airlines 777-300 business class explains what you get on the long-haul product, and JAL has been adding US capacity, including daily year-round San Diego to Tokyo flights.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Hold a Strata Premier or Strata Elite You get 1,300 JAL miles per 1,000 points until October 24.
Hold only a no-annual-fee Citi card You get 910 miles per 1,000 points during the bonus; weigh that against other partners.
Have a specific JAL partner award in mind Confirm space and price, then transfer before October 24.
Have no trip planned Skip it. JAL miles expire after 36 months.
Want to fly JAL to Japan Check the cabin and route before moving points.
Planning Impact

October 24 deadline. The 30% bonus ends then; the standard ratio returns afterwards.

Card type sets the rate. Annual-fee cards transfer at 1:1 base; no-fee cards at 1,000 to 700.

Book before you move. Transfers are one-way and JAL miles expire.
