Chickamauga Closes Glenn-Viniard Road August 12

Drivers who planned to follow the Chickamauga Battlefield auto tour straight from Viniard Field to Wilder Tower now have to leave the park and come back in on a different road.

The National Park Service said Glenn-Viniard Road, between LaFayette Road and Wilder Road, closed on August 12, 2026, for paving work that is expected to last through early September. Public traffic is barred on that stretch, and temporary signs at Tour Stop 5 send cars out of the park, right onto Highway 27, then right again onto Wilder Road.

The closed road is a short cut, not the whole park

Glenn-Viniard Road is the connector that used to carry the official auto tour from Tour Stop 5 at Viniard Field to Tour Stop 6 at the Wilder Brigade Monument.

The park has long labeled Tour Stop 5 as Viniard Field. An official park video identifies Tour Stop 6 as the Wilder Brigade Monument, the stone tower most visitors call Wilder Tower.

That pairing is why this closure matters more than a random maintenance notice. The seven mile driving tour is how most first-time visitors see Chickamauga, and those two stops sit next to each other on the printed route even though the road between them is now closed.

The rest of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park remains open.

The visitor center at 3370 LaFayette Road in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, still sits at the north end of the battlefield. Lookout Mountain and Point Park, the Chattanooga side of the same park, are not on this construction list.

The project is ordinary road paving. The park said it is routine maintenance meant to improve visitor safety, not a closure of monuments, trails, or the visitor center.

How the signed detour actually runs

Start from Tour Stop 5. Temporary signs there are the official cue, not a mapping app that may still try to send you down Glenn-Viniard.

The park’s published route is specific. Leave the battlefield on LaFayette Road, turn right onto Highway 27, then turn right again to reenter on Wilder Road.

That loop puts you back inside the park near the Wilder Brigade Monument.

You can still climb the tower if it is staffed and open, then continue the remaining tour stops on the roads that stay open.

The closed segment itself is off limits to every public vehicle. Do not treat a gap in the cones, a quiet weekday, or a walking path beside the pavement as permission to drive through.

Construction equipment and crews will be on that stretch. The park asked drivers to slow down near workers even on the roads that remain open, because the detour dumps extra traffic onto LaFayette Road, Highway 27, and Wilder Road.

Discover Walker reported the same dates on August 11, one day before the closure began, and said the park would keep designated tour routes reachable with a temporary detour. That local recap matches the official turn-by-turn notice rather than adding a second set of instructions.

What a two hour visit still looks like

A short Chickamauga stop can still work. Begin at the visitor center, pick up the current map, and ask the desk whether Tour Stop 6 is reachable that hour before you commit to the Highway 27 loop.

If you have only two hours, do the northern stops first. Those roads are not the ones being paved, and they keep you close to the visitor center if you decide the extra detour is not worth the remaining daylight.

The park remains free to enter. There is no ticket window that can waive the closure, and there is no shuttle listed in the August 12 notice that replaces the missing road.

How this sits next to a Chattanooga day

Chickamauga is about twenty minutes south of downtown Chattanooga, across the Georgia line. It is the free half of a two day city trip that usually pairs the riverfront with Lookout Mountain.

What remains unknown

Early September is a target, not a clock-time reopening. The park has not published a daily reopen window, a weekend-only exception, or a date when one lane might reopen before the other.

Check the park’s current conditions page the morning you drive, and call 706-866-9241 if a ranger program or school group is counting on Tour Stop 6 at a fixed hour.

The August 12 release does not say whether bicycles or pedestrians may use the closed pavement. Until the park posts a separate walking exception, treat the closed segment as closed to everyone who is not a construction worker.

If you are already on the way to Fort Oglethorpe, keep the visit. Just assume the middle of the auto tour now leaves the park for a few extra minutes and comes back in at Wilder Road.
