Chennai Airport Opens Terminal 1 Cab Pickup Plaza

Chennai International Airport opened a new passenger pickup plaza in front of Terminal 1 on Sunday, September 13, 2026. Airports Authority of India officials told The Hindu the plaza would go into use after a noon virtual inauguration by Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, who joined from New Delhi after a Saturday event was pulled so he could attend the BRICS summit.

If you land at Terminal 1 today, the decision is simple: book a confirmed cab through an allowed app and walk to the plaza instead of riding a buggy to the west multi-level car park. Once you are off the airport and into the city, use our Chennai day guide for the first hours on the ground. Terminal 2 and Terminal 4 arrivals should still treat the west car park as the default pickup, unless they specifically want the new plaza.

At a Glance
  • Status: In use Sunday, September 13, 2026, after a virtual inauguration, according to AAI officials quoted by The Hindu.
  • Location: About 30 meters in front of Terminal 1, per airport officials quoted by the Times of India.
  • First cabs: Ola, Uber, Rapido, Fast Track, Red Taxi, and prepaid taxis with confirmed bookings, AAI officials told The Hindu on September 9.
  • Still open: The west multi-level car park remains the pickup for Terminal 4 domestic and Terminal 2 international arrivals.
  • Capacity: Two pickup bays for about 28 vehicles at a time, seating for 150, covered roof, drinking water, and flight information displays.

The Plaza Sits 30 Meters From Terminal 1

Airport officials told the Times of India the new plaza is about 30 meters from Terminal 1, close enough that arriving passengers can board a cab without the detour into the multi-level car park that has defined T1 exits since 2024. DT Next reported three traffic lanes, each about seven meters wide: lanes A and B for pickup, and lane C as an exit with a U-turn. The two pickup lanes can hold about 28 vehicles at once.

The waiting area seats about 150 people under a covered roof, with drinking water and a flight information display, the same officials said. The Times of India put expected throughput at least 5,000 cab trips a day once the point is running. That figure is an airport estimate, not a first-day count. AAI officials also told The Hindu that staff would be on hand after the launch to direct vehicles and guide passengers, which matters on a Sunday when the layout is new to both drivers and arriving families.

Booked App Cabs Enter First

This is not an open taxi rank. AAI officials told The Hindu on September 9 that passengers who book through Ola, Uber, Rapido, Fast Track, Red Taxi, or prepaid taxi can board at the plaza, and that those cabs may enter from the multi-level car park only with a confirmed booking. Yellow-board company cars, including vehicles sent by hotels or offices, stay at the west wing of the parking lot. Officials said sending every commercial vehicle to the plaza would clog the terminal frontage.

The Times of India described a tighter first phase limited to Ola, Uber, and Rapido, with other aggregators and black-and-yellow taxis added only after AAI watches congestion. Treat that as a live operating rule: the named apps are in, and extra fleets depend on how the first hours go.

If your booking app still shows the west car park as the pin, follow the pin until the driver and the app agree the plaza is the meeting point. A mismatched pin is how people end up waiting in two places.

T2 and T4 Arrivals Still Use the West Car Park

The west multi-level car park does not close. Officials told the Times of India it remains the pickup for passengers arriving at Terminal 4 domestic and Terminal 2 international, which sit closer to that garage than to the T1 plaza. AAI officials told The Hindu that T1 is where the plaza helps most, and that passengers who still want the plaza from T2 or T4 can use buggy vehicles. The Times of India said those buggies would run from T4 via T2 to T1.

International arrivals who have already cleared immigration, bags, and customs should not assume a second transfer is faster. The walk or buggy ride to the west car park is the shorter landside move from T2.

Choose the plaza from T2 or T4 only if your party is meeting a T1 passenger, or if your driver is already staged there. For the rest of the airport process, the Air Travel hub is the live planning index.

The Two Year Wait After the 2024 Pickup Shift

AAI designed the plaza opposite Terminal 1 as a waiting and pickup space, with construction starting in 2023 and an original target of October 2024, The Hindu reported. In July 2024, while that work was still unfinished, AAI moved prepaid taxi, Ola, Uber, Fast Track, Namma Yatri, and other cab pickups to a single point at the west multi-level car park, according to the authority’s July 29, 2024 notice. Free buggies ran from T1 to the garage ramp.

The Times of India said the plaza was completed in December 2025 and then sat unused because of legal issues involving the airport’s previous parking contractor. DT Next put the build cost at about 22.88 crore rupees. AAI officials told The Hindu they had finished a dry run before opening.

The September 12 in-person inauguration was deferred for the minister’s BRICS schedule, then restored as a virtual launch after passengers complained online, The Hindu reported on Sunday. This plaza opening is not the Phase 2 terminal works, which Deep Arrival covered when builders received a March 2027 deadline.

Sunday Arrival Steps That Still Matter

Book the cab before you leave baggage claim, and screenshot the pickup pin. If the app still routes the driver to the west car park, walk or ride there until both sides update. The Times of India said AAI planned 105 passenger-guidance staff and 18 traffic marshals. Use them if the plaza lanes are stacked.

Private cars were not the subject of Sunday’s change. AAI’s 2024 notice already separated private kerbside pickup from commercial taxi staging, and Sunday’s reporting did not move private cars into the plaza. If a friend is collecting you, follow private pickup signs. If you hold a prepaid taxi voucher, confirm whether it is valid at the new point or still tied to the west car park counter.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Land at Terminal 1 with an Ola, Uber, Rapido, Fast Track, Red Taxi, or prepaid booking Walk to the new plaza about 30 meters in front of T1. Enter only with a confirmed booking.
Land at Terminal 2 or Terminal 4 Use the west multi-level car park unless you specifically want the T1 plaza. Buggies are planned from T4 via T2.
Are meeting a hotel, office, or other yellow-board car Stay at the west wing of the multi-level car park. Those vehicles are not in the first plaza mix.
Open your cab app and still see the west car park pin Follow the pin. Do not wait at the plaza until the driver and the app both show the new point.
Planning Impact

September 13, 2026 is the open date. Terminal 1 arrivals with a confirmed app cab should walk to the plaza about 30 meters from the door, not default to the west car park.

The app pin is the live meeting point. If the driver is still routed to the west car park, go there until both the app and the driver show the plaza.

Terminal 2 and Terminal 4 keep the west car park. Use a buggy to the T1 plaza only if you are meeting someone there.

Frequently Asked

Can I get an Uber at Chennai Airport Terminal 1 now?

Yes, if you have a confirmed booking. AAI officials told The Hindu that Ola, Uber, Rapido, Fast Track, Red Taxi, and prepaid taxis may use the new plaza in front of Terminal 1, and that those cabs can enter from the car park only with a confirmed booking.

Do I still use the multi-level car park for a cab?

Yes if you arrive at Terminal 2 or Terminal 4, or if you are in a yellow-board company car. The Times of India reported the west car park remains the pickup for T4 domestic and T2 international arrivals. T1 app-cab passengers are the group the plaza is built to pull out of that garage.

When did the new Chennai Airport cab plaza open?

Sunday, September 13, 2026. AAI officials told The Hindu it would go into use after a noon virtual inauguration by Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu. Staff were assigned to direct vehicles after the launch.

How far is the new pickup from Terminal 1?

About 30 meters in front of Terminal 1, according to airport officials quoted by the Times of India. That is the landside walk the plaza was meant to restore after AAI shifted commercial cab pickup into the west multi-level car park in July 2024.
