Santa Rosa Island Overnight Camping Resumes October 14

Hiking trail through a canyon on Santa Rosa Island in Channel Islands National Park

Channel Islands National Park will restore overnight camping on parts of Santa Rosa Island beginning October 14, after keeping every campsite dark through October 13 while crews work through a spring wildfire that burned 18,379 acres. The National Park Service fire recovery page, last updated September 23, says Water Canyon Campground and designated backcountry beaches in the northwest and southwest quadrants reopen that morning.

Travelers who already hold a Recreation.gov reservation for October 14 or later do not need to rebook, but they still need a matching boat. Book Channel Islands National Park camping and Island Packers transport on the same dates before you leave Ventura Harbor, because the park will not run shuttles on the island.

At a Glance
  • Overnight reopen: October 14 at Water Canyon Campground and northwest and southwest backcountry beaches.
  • Still closed: All overnight use through October 13; southeast backcountry camping for the rest of 2026; the burn area.
  • Day use: Resumed July 1, with 3 to 4 hours ashore on typical Island Packers trips.
  • Book both: Recreation.gov for the site, then Island Packers for the boat.
  • Hike in: Water Canyon Campground sits about 1.5 miles from Bechers Bay pier.

Water Canyon Campground Reopens October 14

The Santa Barbara Independent published the park’s September 23 notice that Water Canyon Campground returns with toilets, picnic tables, food-storage boxes, drinking water, and wind shelters. Visitors must carry every bag from the pier and pack out every piece of trash. The campground has 15 sites. Island Packers says each site is booked for up to five people.

That is the same primitive campground the park listed on its camping page, last updated September 16, as the Santa Rosa option with flush toilets and drinking water. It is also the windiest developed site in the park’s table after San Miguel. Thirty-knot winds are common. Low-profile tents, extra stakes, and line to tie shelters to tables are not optional gear.

The fire burned nearly 40 percent of the island between May 15 and June 4. Park staff cancelled Water Canyon and backcountry beach reservations through October 13 and emailed those holders. Existing bookings that start on October 14 stay valid, according to the Independent’s reprint of the park release.

Deep Arrival covered the earlier split, when day trips returned while overnight stays stayed shut through mid-August. The October 14 date is the first overnight window the park has now locked in on the recovery page.

Southeast Beaches Stay Closed Through 2026

Backcountry camping in the southeastern quadrant will not reopen this recreation season. No permits will be issued for those beaches for the rest of 2026. The burn area itself stays closed to visitors. Shorelines next to the burned ground, including spots near Johnsons Lee, Ford Point, and Southeast Anchorage, remain off limits.

Superintendent Ethan McKinley told the park’s release that restoring overnight access is a step forward while substantial recovery work remains. Crews are racing to stabilize hillsides in the Torrey pines, clear culverts, and keep restoration moving inside the closed burn area ahead of likely winter rains.

Northwest and southwest quadrant beaches that the park designates for backcountry use are the only beach-camping options that return with Water Canyon. Those sites are a remote backpacking or kayaking experience. There are no toilets or reliable fresh water once you leave the developed campground. The park requires WAG bags so human waste leaves the island with you.

Booking Boats and Campsites on the Same Dates

Reservations are required for every Channel Islands campground and can be made up to six months ahead on Recreation.gov. The park’s camping page tells visitors using public boats to find dates that have both a campsite and an Island Packers departure. Book the boat first if the calendar is thin, then lock the site, or hold both tabs open and match them before you pay.

Island Packers is the concessioner from Ventura Harbor. Its Santa Rosa camping page lists adult camper round-trip fares at $134 for ages 13 to 54, $122 for ages 55 and older, and $105 for children ages 3 to 12, with infants free if reserved. Those fares sit on the operator page and can change, so confirm the price at checkout. Gear must weigh no more than 45 pounds per piece, and the crossing can soak bags at the landing, so waterproof the load.

A Channel Islands ferry trip to Santa Rosa is longer than the Anacapa or Santa Cruz day runs. Passengers on Island Packers day boats typically get 3 to 4 hours ashore. Campers stay until a later pickup and should pack food and water for an extra night in case swell cancels the return.

Closed Trails and Burn Zones Still Off Limits

Day use resumed July 1. Park staff open a pop-up visitor center on each Island Packers ride to help day guests use a short window. Open options include parts of Cherry Canyon Trail, the Coastal Trail, the beach near Water Canyon or the pier, and the historic schoolhouse. Trails to Carrington Point, Lobo Canyon, and Black Mountain are open but too long for most day visitors.

Torrey Pines Trail is closed. Water Canyon upstream from the beach is closed. A segment of Cherry Canyon Trail near Water Canyon Campground is closed. Stay out of signed closed areas. Park crews are still clearing burned asbestos, fallen barbed wire, and unstable tread. Wildlife lost cover in the fire, and extra human pressure makes recovery harder.

Clean boots, tents, and packs before you go ashore. The fire left ash and open ground that invasive plants can occupy quickly. Drinking water is available at the campground and in the historic ranch area. Water from creeks should be purified. Flush toilets are in the ranch area. No other visitor services operate on the island.

Packing for a Windy Island Overnight

Campfires are banned. Cook on a chemical-fuel stove. Store food and trash in the animal-proof boxes at each site. Island foxes and ravens open zippers, so pin or clip tent doors shut. Island mice have tested positive for hantavirus. Keep food sealed and tents zipped.

Fog, wind, and bright sun can hit the same day. Layer clothing, pack a wind shell, and bring an extra pair of shoes in a dry bag. Hiking boots matter on unsigned dirt roads and animal paths used for backcountry approaches. The closest backcountry beach is about 10 miles from the Bechers Bay drop-off if you walk it.

Check the park recovery page the morning you sail. Conditions can change after rain. If Island Packers cancels for weather, you still own the campsite reservation, but you cannot reach it without a boat. Build slack into the itinerary instead of stacking a tight mainland flight the same afternoon as the return crossing.

Decision Matrix
If you… What to do
Hold a Recreation.gov site for October 14 or later Keep it. Confirm an Island Packers seat on the same dates and re-read the recovery map.
Want Water Canyon in late October Book the 15-site campground and the boat together. Carry gear 1.5 miles from Bechers Bay pier.
Want southeast beach camping this year Do not plan it. The park will not issue those permits for the rest of 2026.
Only have a day Day use is open. Expect 3 to 4 hours ashore and skip Torrey Pines Trail and the burn area.
Planning Impact

October 13 is the last night the island stays dark. Do not travel for camping that night. Day use is the only legal option until the next morning.

October 14 is the first overnight date. Match Recreation.gov and Island Packers before you leave the harbor.

The rest of 2026 is closed in the southeast quadrant. Choose Water Canyon or the listed northwest and southwest beaches, or wait until 2027 for those shores.
