Carnival Cruise Line has told guests on six ships that departures between Thursday, October 8, and Monday, October 12, 2026, will begin with a full, in-person safety drill instead of the usual electronic muster. Cruise Hive reported the notification emails on October 2, naming Spirit, Luminosa, Legend, Radiance, Firenze and Miracle.
If your sailing is on the list, plan your embarkation day around a group assembly shortly before sailaway, and read our guide to what a muster drill on a cruise involves before you board. Cruise Mummy lists the same six departures, which range from seven to 16 nights.
- Who is affected: Guests on six Carnival sailings departing October 8 to 12, 2026.
- What changes: A mandatory full safety drill replaces the electronic muster before departure.
- On board: Food and beverage service pauses while the drill runs.
- Everyone else: The electronic muster stays standard on all sailings not listed.

The Six Sailings and Their Dates
Carnival Spirit leads the list with a 16-night one-way cruise from Seattle to Mobile, Alabama, on October 8, through the Panama Canal with calls at Cabo San Lucas, Puntarenas and Cartagena. A day later, on October 9, Carnival Luminosa leaves Tokyo on a 14-night one-way cruise to Singapore.
On Sunday, October 11, two ships sail with the drill. Carnival Legend runs a 12-night Eastern Mediterranean round trip from Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, and Carnival Radiance runs a 14-night Hawaii round trip from Long Beach with calls at Kahului, Honolulu, Nawiliwili, Hilo and Ensenada.
The last two leave on Monday, October 12. Carnival Firenze starts a seven-night adults-only Mexican Riviera cruise from Long Beach, and Carnival Miracle starts a 10-night Western Caribbean round trip from Galveston with calls at Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Honduras, Belize and Cozumel.
The Drill Step by Step
The email Cruise Hive quotes says a full safety drill will take place shortly before departure and is a mandatory procedure that all guests must attend. Public address announcements walk guests through each step, from reaching their assigned muster stations to putting on a life vest.
Crew members check Sail and Sign cards to confirm that everyone attends, demonstrate life vest use and hand out wristbands that identify muster stations for young cruisers. Guests are also taught the emergency signal, seven short blasts followed by one long blast.
Why Guests Get No Choice About It
Carnival brand ambassador John Heald has said every ship must run the in-person drill twice a year under U.S. Coast Guard, Australian Coast Guard and other government rules, plus the international Safety of Life at Sea convention, known as SOLAS. Cruise Hive notes he confirmed this in October 2025.
That is why the list includes ships based in the United States, Europe and Asia. The requirement follows each ship wherever it is homeported, so a drill on your sailing says nothing about a problem with your ship.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Sail on one of the six listed departures | Read your notification email and plan to be on board and ready at your muster station before departure. |
| Are traveling with young children | Expect a wristband showing the muster station, and keep it on until the drill is finished. |
| Plan to eat or drink right at sailaway | Eat before the drill or afterward, because food and beverage service pauses during the briefing. |
| Sail on any other Carnival departure | Expect the usual electronic muster unless you receive a similar email. |
Drills Can Be Cancelled in Rare Cases
Cruise Hive points out that the in-person drill can be cancelled in exceptional circumstances. Carnival Sunshine was due to hold one at the start of its September 27 departure from Norfolk, but the ship was delayed back to Virginia by a nor’easter and sailed a day later, so guests used the electronic muster instead.
The outlet adds that the missed drill will likely be rescheduled for a different sailing in the near future. Guests should treat the email as the line’s current plan, not a guarantee, and check the Carnival app or inbox again before embarkation day.
How This Compares With Late September
This is the second batch of drill notices in two weeks. Our earlier report on Carnival’s five-ship drill notice for September 26 to 28 covered Horizon, Panorama, Sunshine, Vista and Firenze, so only Firenze appears on both lists, on different sailings.
The pattern fits the twice-a-year rule, so notices like these will keep appearing as other ships come due. Nothing in the reports says the electronic muster is being retired.
Boarding day gets one more fixed appointment. The drill happens shortly before departure, so late arrivals risk missing it, and the notification email is the place to confirm timing.
Food service pauses. Plan snacks and drinks around the briefing instead of expecting the bars and dining rooms to open the moment you step on board.
The electronic muster is still the default. Only the six listed sailings are affected, and more notices are likely as other ships come due.
Which Carnival ships have a full drill from October 8 to 12?
Spirit, Luminosa, Legend, Radiance, Firenze and Miracle, one sailing each, per Cruise Hive and Cruise Mummy.
Is the drill optional?
No. The email says all guests are required to take part in the safety drill.
Does the electronic muster go away?
No. Cruise Hive reports it remains the protocol on every sailing that is not listed.
Why does Carnival run these drills?
Heald says each ship must hold the drill twice a year to meet Coast Guard and SOLAS rules.
