For almost three decades, the thing that made Half Moon Cay special was also the thing that kept it small. The private Bahamian island had no pier, so every guest reached the beach the slow way, by tender, and the size of those tender boats quietly capped how many people could stand on the sand at once. As of June 2026 that cap is gone. Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America Line have finished a long overhaul, renamed the island RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, and added the one thing it never had: a place for ships to tie up and dock.
The finished destination reopened on June 1, 2026. Carnival Sunrise became the first ship to dock at the new pier, arriving at 8 a.m. and leaving at 4 p.m., with a ribbon cutting led by Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy. For the cruise lines it is the capstone of a plan announced in December 2024. For travelers it is a different kind of beach day than the one Half Moon Cay was known for, and the difference is worth understanding before booking a 2026 sailing.

What RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay actually is
Half Moon Cay sits on Little San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. Holland America Line developed it and opened it as a port of call in December 1997, and for years it set the standard other cruise lines chased, prized for wide beaches and an undeveloped shoreline. Today the island is shared across Carnival Corporation, the parent company, with Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Holland America Line all calling there. Carnival says 22 of its ships currently visit, on sailings that leave from homeports up and down the US coast.
The rename arrived first. Carnival and Holland America jointly renamed the island RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay in December 2024, framing the new name around the experience the upgrades were meant to deliver. The island also belongs to the Paradise Collection, Carnival Corporation’s growing group of exclusive destinations. The collection now pairs RelaxAway with Celebration Key, which opened on Grand Bahama in 2025, and Isla Tropicale in Honduras, the beach destination Carnival rebranded from Mahogany Bay. That grouping matters, because Carnival has said many of its 2026 and later itineraries will call at both Bahamian islands on the same week.
The new pier ends the tender, and lifts the crowd ceiling
The headline change is a single piece of infrastructure. A newly built pier on the north side of the island lets ships berth and let guests walk straight off, ending the long standing routine where some arrivals had to be ferried ashore on tenders. Tendering is slow, it builds queues at both ends of the day, and rough water can cancel a private island call outright. A pier removes all three problems at once, which is why a dock is the upgrade cruisers tend to feel first.
It also changes who can come. The pier opens RelaxAway to Carnival’s Excel class, the line’s largest ships, including Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee. Those vessels carry several thousand more guests than the older ships that used to tender in, and they could not call at Half Moon Cay regularly before because tendering a ship that size is impractical. So the same pier that erases the tender wait also raises the number of people who can be on the beach on a given day. The feature that long protected the island, its lack of a dock, was a natural limit on volume, and that limit is what the new pier trades away.
How Carnival kept the quiet island and built the busy one
The resolution is geography. RelaxAway is now run as two sides with separate welcome plazas, spread along more than a mile of white sand, and the design keeps them deliberately different. The south side is the original landing, the stretch Holland America has used since 1997. It received a Bahamian refresh, a new beach club, an updated lunch venue, and renovated facilities, but it is meant to stay the secluded beach longtime guests know. Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line, described the south side as remaining the “secluded paradise” her guests are used to.
The north side is the new build, and it is where the volume goes. The two lines detailed a north side with two lunch venues, island themed bars, and a tram service to move guests around, plus a separate shore excursion pier, expanded lounging areas, and added cabanas. In practice that means two beach grills, Orchid and Hibiscus, bars such as Luna Tide and the Lil’ Tiki, a walking route the lines call the Papaya Pathway, and private cabanas and daybeds for guests who want to pay for space. Christine Duffy has cast the project as a way to “expand access and welcome more guests” while preserving what made the island appealing. The split is how those two goals coexist on one cay: a high capacity plaza on one shore, a quiet beach on the other.
| Side of the island | What you find there | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| South side (original) | Holland America’s longtime landing, refreshed design, a new beach club, an updated lunch venue, the secluded beach | Quiet beach days, Holland America and Princess guests, returning visitors |
| North side (new) | The new pier and plaza, Orchid and Hibiscus beach grills, island bars, a tram, the Papaya Pathway, more loungers, cabanas and daybeds | Big ship arrivals, families, first time cruisers, easy step off access |
What it means for a 2026 cruise
The practical question is no longer whether to visit RelaxAway, but which version of it a given sailing delivers. A Holland America or Princess call still tends toward the secluded south, while a Carnival Excel class ship will dock at the new north pier and pour several thousand guests into the new plaza. The brand and the ship on the booking, more than the island name, decide whether the day feels like the old Half Moon Cay or the new one.
Two booking details follow from that. First, the north side added cabanas and daybeds, the kind of private rentals that sell out early on a full ship, so they are worth reserving well before sail date rather than at the gangway. Second, many Carnival weeks now pair RelaxAway with the company’s other new Bahamian stop, so it helps to read the full itinerary; Deep Arrival has covered how to time an arrival day at Celebration Key, the island Carnival most often packages alongside this one. It is also worth remembering that a private island day in the Bahamas still carries the country’s per passenger government charge on cruise calls, which is built into the fare rather than billed at the beach.
The wider backdrop is an arms race. Royal Caribbean keeps expanding Perfect Day at CocoCay, and Norwegian is building out its own Bahamian island, Great Stirrup Cay, as more of every cruise week shifts to company owned beaches. RelaxAway is Carnival’s entry in that contest, and the pier is what makes it competitive at scale. The island that once stood apart for being hard to reach is now built to be easy to reach, and the gamble is that a secluded south shore can survive next door to a megaship pier.
- Check which side your ship uses: Holland America and Princess lean to the secluded south; Carnival’s big ships dock at the new north pier.
- Expect to walk off, not tender: if your ship can berth at the pier, you step ashore directly, and weather is far less likely to cancel the stop.
- Excel class can finally call: Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee can now visit, so the island appears on big ship Bahamas itineraries for the first time.
- Reserve cabanas and daybeds early: the new north side rentals are limited and sell out on full sailings.
- Read the whole itinerary: many 2026 Carnival weeks call at both RelaxAway and Celebration Key, two different beach days in one cruise.
What is RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay?
RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay is the renamed and expanded private island in the Bahamas shared by Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Holland America Line. Carnival and Holland America renamed Half Moon Cay in December 2024 and reopened the completed upgrades on June 1, 2026.
Why did Half Moon Cay get a new pier?
The island never had a pier, so guests had to reach the beach by tender boat. The new pier on the north side lets ships dock directly, ends the tender wait, and means rough water cancels far fewer calls.
Can Carnival’s biggest ships visit Half Moon Cay now?
Yes. The new pier opens the island to Carnival’s Excel class ships, including Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee, which could not call regularly before because of the tender limit.
Is Half Moon Cay still relaxing after the expansion?
The south side, where Holland America has always landed, keeps its secluded beach, with refreshed facilities and a new beach club. The new north side adds a higher capacity plaza with beach grills, bars, and a tram, so the feel of the day depends on which side your ship uses.
What is the Paradise Collection?
The Paradise Collection is Carnival Corporation’s group of exclusive destinations. Alongside RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay it includes Celebration Key, which opened on Grand Bahama in 2025, and Isla Tropicale in Honduras, formerly Mahogany Bay.
