Topanga Canyon SR-27 Closes Overnight Through 8 a.m. Saturday

Drivers who use Topanga Canyon Boulevard to move between the Pacific Coast Highway corridor and the San Fernando Valley face a full overnight shutdown of State Route 27 while Caltrans finishes a major storm drain under the road.

Caltrans says SR-27 is fully closed between State Route 1 / Pacific Coast Highway and Grand View Drive from 11:59 p.m. Friday, August 28, to 8 a.m. Saturday, August 29, so crews can keep installing a reinforced concrete pipe beneath the highway.

The traveler decision is immediate and local. If your plan depended on a late Friday or early Saturday Topanga Canyon drive between the coast and the valley, switch to the published freeway detours before you leave, or shift the trip outside the closure window.

Santa Monica Daily Press independently reported the same overnight window and framed the work as part of the final major recovery phase after the Palisades Fire and winter storms.

Before the full shutdown, Caltrans also planned a one-lane shared traffic pattern from 9 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. Friday for about half a mile near mile marker 2.5, with flaggers alternating directions while crews reconfigure the work zone.

That staging step matters if you leave the coast or the canyon after dinner on Friday. Even before midnight, expect stop-and-go flagging and extra minutes on the approach rather than a free-flowing canyon descent.

The pipe itself is the engineering reason the canyon cannot stay open overnight. Caltrans describes an 84-inch reinforced concrete pipe designed to carry storm water plus increased mud and debris during rainstorms, cutting the risk of debris overflow and embankment failure in later storms.

The agency puts the pipe installation project at about $2.75 million and says this overnight work is the last major piece of ongoing recovery efforts on SR-27 after the Palisades Fire and winter storms.

Pipe installation is expected to finish by fall 2026, with most recovery work on SR-27 wrapping up by the end of 2026. That longer timeline is useful if you are planning repeated Topanga or Malibu weekends through autumn rather than treating this as a one-night oddity.

North of the closure, SR-27 between Grand View Drive and U.S. 101 stays open. Do not assume the whole canyon is sealed; the published hard stop is the PCH-to-Grand View segment.

Caltrans published exact alternate routes. Southbound SR-27 drivers should take U.S. 101 to southbound Interstate 405, then westbound Interstate 10 to northbound Pacific Coast Highway.

Northbound SR-27 drivers should take southbound SR-1 to eastbound I-10, then northbound I-405 to westbound U.S. 101. Build buffer for Friday night and Saturday morning freeway volumes, especially near the 405 and 10 interchanges.

Santa Monica Daily Press also flagged related weekday work along Pacific Coast Highway from Temescal Canyon Road in Pacific Palisades to Carbon Beach Terrace in Malibu, where crews may set single-lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays through August 30 for creek cleanup and roadway, drainage, slope, and retaining-wall repairs.

That PCH daytime pattern is separate from the Topanga overnight full closure, but the same traveler should treat the coastal corridor as a construction zone through the weekend transition into next week.

How should weekend planners use this? If you are day-tripping from the valley to Malibu beaches, Point Dume overlooks, or canyon trailheads, leave before the evening staging window or accept the freeway detour and a later arrival.

If you are staying overnight along the coast and hoped to climb Topanga after midnight for a valley return flight or early event, reroute now. The canyon will not be a stealth shortcut during the published hours.
