Caltrain will shut the short hop between Tamien and San Jose Diridon again on Saturday and Sunday, August 22 and 23, and again on September 19 and 20. Those are the last published weekend outages for Guadalupe River bridge work just north of Tamien.
If Tamien is your station that weekend, do not wait on the platform. The operator’s current status page says there is no replacement bus. Weekday trains keep running.

What Caltrain published
The Caltrain 2026 service changes page is the current operator list. It suspends service to Tamien on select weekends from July through September so crews can work on the Guadalupe River bridge.
The remaining dates on that page are Saturday and Sunday, August 22 and 23, and Saturday and Sunday, September 19 and 20. July 11 and 12 and August 8 and 9 have already passed.
The same page says no replacement bus service will be provided during these closures. That is the binding rider instruction. Do not invent a shuttle that the operator did not publish.
The Tamien station page repeats the weekend suspension and points back to the status page for details. Treat those two Caltrain URLs as one notice.
The Guadalupe River Bridge Replacement project page explains the work. Caltrain is replacing and extending two bridges over the river in San Jose, just north of Tamien, so passenger and freight trains can keep using the corridor.
Railway Track and Structures recapped the operator statement in July. It said weekday service would stay up and that riders who are not traveling to Tamien should not feel the construction. Use Caltrain for the remaining dates. Use that recap as independent confirmation of the project, not as a newer calendar.
An older trade recap also listed July 25 and 26. That weekend is not on the current official list. Do not plan around a date the status page no longer prints.
Who cannot ride, and what they can do
Anyone whose weekend trip starts or ends at Tamien on August 22, 23, September 19, or 20 is inside the outage. That includes South County Connector riders who use Tamien as the transfer point toward Capitol, Blossom Hill, Morgan Hill, San Martin, or Gilroy.
Tamien sits at 1355 Lick Avenue in San Jose, in Caltrain Zone 4, and it is also a VTA light-rail stop. The weekend notice is about Caltrain trains on that platform, not about every vehicle that uses the site.
The closure is one station pair, not the whole peninsula. A San Francisco to Diridon trip on those Saturdays is a different train. The status page is not telling those riders to stay home.
There is no Caltrain bus to catch. If you need downtown San Jose from Tamien that weekend, use VTA light rail or a local bus on their own published schedules. Caltrain did not assign those agencies as a substitute.
VTA’s August 10 service-change page is a weekday and weekend bus rewrite, not a Caltrain replacement map. Check that page before you treat a numbered bus as a stand-in for a Tamien train.
If Gilroy or South County is the destination rather than Tamien itself, check whether your train even uses this station. Deep Arrival’s Gilroy Gardens planning guide still maps the park. It does not create a Tamien seat on a dark weekend.
South County Connector trains are the ones that need Tamien. A bike locker or a parked car at 1355 Lick Avenue does not become a train. Leave the car at Diridon those weekends, or do not make the South County trip.
A worked check looks like this. Write the date, the boarding station, and the arrival station. If either end is Tamien on one of the four remaining days, cancel the rail plan. Recheck Monday service on Caltrain’s site before you assume the station is back.
What the bridge work is, and what it is not
The project replaces the northbound span built in 1935 and extends the southbound span. Railway Track and Structures, quoting Caltrain, put the cost at about $171 million and said crews expect to finish bridge construction by October.
The same statement said the Guadalupe Bridge also carries Union Pacific, Amtrak, and Altamont Corridor Express trains. This Caltrain weekend notice is not an Amtrak or ACE timetable. Check those operators on their own pages if your ticket is not a Caltrain ticket.
Capitol Corridor trains use Diridon, not Tamien. A Levi’s Stadium or Oakland trip that starts at Diridon is outside this outage unless you first needed Tamien to reach Diridon.
Work happens mostly in daylight hours Monday through Friday. The weekend train outage exists so crews can finish deck and track work that cannot sit under a live passenger schedule. It is not a peninsula-wide shutdown.
It is also not the Pacific Surfliner weekend that closes Van Nuys to Los Angeles on September 19 and 20. That is a different railroad, a different city, and a promised bus. Do not mix the two calendars.
What this does not change
Monday through Friday trains at Tamien are not on this list. A weekday commute next week is not this weekend outage.
Diridon remains open as the San Jose end of the main Caltrain line. Only the Tamien connector is dark those four days. A Diridon ticket to San Francisco does not become a Tamien ticket.
October is the project’s stated finish window for the bridge, not a fifth published weekend. Recheck the status page if you ride Tamien after September 20. Do not invent another closed Saturday from a finished-by-October line.
