That is not a new airline at Tampa. It is a new London airport, a new connection pattern, and a thinner weekly grid. Book October 25 and later as a Heathrow trip. Do not keep a Gatwick hotel, a Gatwick rail plan, or a daily-flight assumption unless Virgin Atlantic’s existing Heathrow schedule covers the day you need.

What Tampa’s London page now says
The official Tampa International Airport London page still lists two nonstop ways to the capital: British Airways to London Gatwick and Virgin Atlantic to London Heathrow.
Under the British Airways mark, the same page now prints a dated instruction: LGW ends 10/24, LHR starts 10/25.
That line is the current airport record. It is more useful than an old route rumor because it is sitting on the page TPA uses to sell the city pair.
British Airways has been telling the same story on its Tampa and new-routes pages: from October 2026, Tampa flights leave Heathrow instead of Gatwick. The airport page is what locks the exact last Gatwick day and the first Heathrow day.
A London airport change is not a small label swap. Gatwick and Heathrow sit on different sides of the city, feed different trains, and connect to different BA banks. A traveler who keeps a Gatwick hotel after October 24 is planning the wrong London.
What changes on the aircraft and the calendar
The airport announcement that first put numbers on the move came in March. The Business Observer reported that Tampa International Airport said the Heathrow service would run five days a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, beginning October 25. Airport spokesman Josh Gillin told the paper BA would bring a Boeing 787 Dreamliner and that the airport projected connections to more than 43 international destinations through Heathrow.
The same report gave published times: Heathrow to Tampa at 12:45 p.m., arriving 5:30 p.m., and Tampa to Heathrow at 7:55 p.m., arriving 9:15 a.m. the next day.
Treat those days and times as the March airport briefing, not as a live October timetable. Recheck BA.com before you buy. The part that is current today is TPA’s October 24 and October 25 split.
Five weekly flights is a thinner product than a daily Gatwick turn. A Tuesday or Friday departure that exists today may not exist after the move. If your trip only works on a dropped day, Virgin Atlantic’s Heathrow flight is the remaining same-city backup, or you connect through another BA U.S. gateway.
British Airways has flown Tampa since 1985, most of that time into Gatwick. Aviation coverage of the March briefing said the relocated Heathrow flight would use a 787-10 in place of the current 777-200ER. TPA’s current London page does not repeat the aircraft type. Do not plan a specific cabin map until the booking path shows the metal.
Heathrow is not Gatwick with a new name
Heathrow is BA’s main global hub. Deep Arrival’s British Airways guide already notes that most U.S. BA flights use Heathrow Terminal 5, with a smaller leftover Gatwick set. The Tampa switch puts this Florida route into that larger T5 machine.
That is the traveler payoff. A Heathrow arrival can connect to more BA long-haul banks without a London hotel night. A Gatwick arrival is better if your London stay, rental car, or train is already built around the south side of the city.
The connection math only works if you actually land at Heathrow. A ticket that still says LGW after October 24 is either an old booking that needs a change or a mistake. Read the airport code before you pay.
Virgin Atlantic already sells Tampa to Heathrow. After October 25, Tampa has two Heathrow airlines and no BA Gatwick flight. That is more Heathrow choice, not more Gatwick choice. Do not assume BA and Virgin leave at the same hour or use the same terminal in London.
How to book the week of the switch
If you are flying on or before October 24, keep using the current Gatwick pattern unless BA rebooks you earlier. If you are flying on or after October 25, search Tampa to Heathrow, not Tampa to London as a generic city.
The messy tickets are the ones that span the cut. An outbound on October 23 and a return on October 30 can put you into Gatwick one way and Heathrow the other. That is legal. It is also a different London arrival plan on each end.
Build the ground plan around each airport code. Heathrow has the Elizabeth line, Heathrow Express, and the Piccadilly line. Gatwick has the Gatwick Express and Southern trains into Victoria. Those are not interchangeable last-minute substitutions.
If you are connecting beyond London, Heathrow is usually the cleaner BA bank. If you are staying in Brighton, Sussex, or near Gatwick itself, the October 25 switch makes BA worse for you, not better. In that case Virgin’s Heathrow flight does not solve the south-of-London problem either. You may want a different U.S. gateway or a domestic UK connection.
What else TPA is telling arriving passengers
The same airport site that dates the BA switch also carries a road advisory. The exit from northbound I-275 to TPA has moved about half a mile north for an FDOT Westshore Interchange project, and TPA says that shift lasts until fall 2028.
That is not part of the Heathrow decision, but it is part of the same Tampa arrival. A late inbound from London plus a moved highway exit is a real missed-hotel risk if you are driving yourself.
TPA still tells guests the Level 3 information kiosk is staffed from 4 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Use that desk if a delayed Heathrow inbound leaves you unsure about bags, paging, or the new road pattern.
