Santa Elena Canyon is the photograph people go to Big Bend for. Right now you cannot drive the paved road to it, and part of the river access below it is closed for border construction.
The park’s conditions page lists the paved road between Cottonwood Campground and Santa Elena Canyon as closed until further notice after flash flooding, alongside Old Ore Road and Black Gap Road from earlier floods. A separate closure order took effect at midnight on August 12.
- Closed by flooding: the paved Cottonwood to Santa Elena Canyon road, until further notice.
- Closed by construction: ground from the Santa Elena boat launch through the work zone, from August 12.
- Also out: Old Ore Road and Black Gap Road, both from past flash flooding.
- November 1: Cottonwood Campground reopens after its summer closure.
Two Different Closures on the Same Stretch
It is worth separating them, because they behave differently. The road closure is weather damage with no published end date, and roads like that reopen when repairs finish.
The second is a Superintendent’s order under Title 36 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 1.5, closing ground to all public access in support of a Department of Homeland Security infrastructure project authorised under the 1996 immigration act. The park states it is intended to limit hazard exposure from construction equipment and road work, runs until further notice, and will be assessed on an ongoing basis.
Exactly What Ground Is Shut
The park gives coordinates, which is unusual and useful. The closure runs from the eastern parking lot edge of the Santa Elena boat launch at 29.15329, minus 103.57845, down to the end of the clearing work.
It also covers everything from the southern road edge, marked by the white fog line, down to the high-water mark of the river. That second line is the one to read carefully: it closes the bank, not just the parking area.
The Back Roads Are Not the Answer
Old Ore Road and Black Gap Road are closed, and the park is blunt about what they are even when open: extremely rough and suitable only for the most rugged vehicles. It tells visitors never to leave the pavement without full four wheel drive, good tyres, a good spare, a jack and water.
Primitive dirt roads in Big Bend need high clearance and true four wheel drive together. The park names what does not qualify: cars, minivans, motorhomes and small crossover SUVs.
What Is Open Right Now
Panther Junction Visitor Center runs daily 8:30am to 5pm and Chisos Basin 8:30am to 4pm with a lunch closure. Persimmon Gap, Rio Grande Village and Castolon visitor centers are all shut for the summer.
The restaurant is closed and a food truck operates outside the main lodge building daily from 7am to 3pm, closed between 10 and 11. The Boquillas port of entry into Mexico is open Friday through Monday, 9am to 4pm.
Planning a Visit This Autumn
Big Bend’s good season starts as the heat breaks, and Cottonwood Campground reopens on November 1, so a November trip finds more of the park working than a September one. Check the conditions page the week you travel rather than relying on anything written in advance, including this.
Where you base yourself matters more than usual when a paved road is out, and our guide to where to stay near Big Bend covers the options inside and outside the park. The wider Big Bend National Park guide sets out what the park offers by season.
| If you… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Were driving to Santa Elena Canyon | The paved road from Cottonwood is closed until further notice. Check before you set out. |
| Planned to launch or walk the bank there | Ground from the boat launch to the high-water mark is closed to all public access. |
| Thought of routing around on dirt | Old Ore and Black Gap are closed, and need true four wheel drive even when open. |
| Want Cottonwood Campground | It reopens November 1 after the summer closure. |
| Are crossing to Boquillas | The port of entry runs Friday to Monday, 9am to 4pm. |
Two closures, two causes. Flood damage on the road, a federal order on the riverbank.
Neither has an end date. Both run until further notice and are reviewed on an ongoing basis.
November is the better month. Cottonwood reopens and the closed visitor centers return.
