Big Bend Closes Old Maverick Road August 12

Big Bend National Park closed Old Maverick Road beginning August 12, 2026. The traveler decision is immediate: do not use that dirt shortcut to Santa Elena Canyon, and treat the Santa Elena boat-launch river edge as closed until the park says otherwise.

The National Park Service posted the update on its official Big Bend alerts and conditions page, last updated August 12, 2026. The order is tied to an active Department of Homeland Security infrastructure project, not to a flash flood.

What the park closed today

Old Maverick Road is the 14-mile improved dirt road between Maverick Junction and Santa Elena Canyon. NPS says it is closed beginning August 12, 2026, until construction poses no more dangers to the public.

The written closure order took effect August 10. The road restriction itself starts August 12 and applies to all vehicle traffic. The park says it will keep assessing the closure and will post any expansion or lift.

A second, more local closure began at 12:00 a.m. on August 12. It bars public access from the Santa Elena Boat Launch eastern parking lot edge to the end of the current clearing work, and from the southern road edge down to the high-water mark of the Rio Grande.

Those two sentences are the ones that change a west-side day. Old Maverick is no longer a loop option. The river edge by the boat launch is no longer a place to wander while you wait for a shuttle or a photo.

NPS lists the coordinates for the boat-launch line at 29.15329, -103.57845. If you are already in the Santa Elena parking area, stay north of that construction edge and do not drop to the waterline.

What this is not

Old Ore Road and Black Gap Road are also closed, but for a different reason. NPS says both remain shut until further notice because of unsafe conditions after past flash flooding.

Do not merge those flood closures into the construction story. A high-clearance plan that was already dead on Old Ore is still dead. The new August 12 change is Old Maverick plus the Santa Elena river edge.

The park restaurant is closed for the season. A food truck sits outside the main lodge building from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. break. That is a meal fact, not a construction fact, and it matters if you were counting on indoor lunch after a long west-side drive.

Panther Junction Visitor Center is open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Chisos Basin Visitor Center is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and closes for lunch. Persimmon Gap, Rio Grande Village, and Castolon visitor centers are closed for the summer. Cottonwood Campground stays closed until November 1.

Boquillas Crossing is open Friday through Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. That port is on the east side and is not the same decision as Santa Elena on the west side.

How to reach Santa Elena without Old Maverick

Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive is the paved 30-mile road to Castolon and Santa Elena Canyon. That is now the default approach. Budget more time. The dirt shortcut is gone, and you cannot assume you will loop back via Maverick Junction.

The Santa Elena Canyon Trail is not named in the August 12 closure order. Access still requires crossing the bed of Terlingua Creek, which can be dry sand, mud, or flowing water. If the boat-launch construction zone blocks the usual walk-up, ask a ranger at Panther Junction before you drive 30 miles to find out.

Deep Arrival's Big Bend National Park planning page is the evergreen place to reset a west-side itinerary around the remaining paved roads, visitor centers, and river access that are still open.

The Center for Biological Diversity said on August 6 that contractors had begun barrier and road work near Santa Elena Canyon. That independent report predates the NPS road closure by six days and is useful only as confirmation that construction is underway. The binding traveler rule is the park order, not an advocacy press release.

CBD also cites 561,459 park visits in 2024 and local river-outfitter concern about river access. Treat those as context. They do not change whether Old Maverick is open this week.

How to plan the next 48 hours

If you are already on the way, stop at Panther Junction first. Ask specifically about Old Maverick, the Santa Elena boat-launch edge, and whether the canyon trailhead walk is still legal from the paved lot. Then decide whether the west side is still worth the fuel.

If Santa Elena is the whole trip, keep Ross Maxwell and add extra water and daylight. If the canyon trail is blocked on arrival, turn around at Castolon rather than improvising a river walk into the closed strip.

If you came for backcountry dirt, Old Ore and Black Gap are already out. Old Maverick is now out too. That leaves paved scenic driving, Chisos Basin trails, and whatever primitive roads the desk still lists as open. Do not treat a paper map as current.

If you hold a river trip, confirm the put-in with your outfitter. The closed river-edge strip is exactly where casual launching and parking used to leak into the construction zone. A permitted trip may still run. An unpermitted walk to the water will not.

Overnight guests should also reset meals. The lodge restaurant is closed. The food truck ends at 3:00 p.m. Bring dinner into the Chisos or plan to cook. Cottonwood is closed until November 1, so west-side camping is not a fallback.

What remains open, and what to watch

The park is not closed. Chisos Basin, Panther Junction, and the paved Ross Maxwell corridor still function. The new limit is a named dirt road and a named river edge at Santa Elena.

NPS says the construction closure will stay until the work no longer poses a public danger. That is not a date. Do not book a September west-side dirt loop on the hope that August 12 was a three-day window.

The park also says more closures may be posted. If you are staying several nights, reread the conditions page each morning. A road that is open at breakfast can be taped by lunch.

Keep the two closure families separate in your notes. Flood damage still owns Old Ore and Black Gap. Construction now owns Old Maverick and the Santa Elena river edge. Mixing them is how people drive to the wrong gate.
